I have had it go down or never up and running on three flights this year. Very disappointing.
Had to power up the laptop and do work…:(

I've seen it fail 2 of 4 times I've flown a DirecTV capable aircraft, but those were issues where the seats wouldn't process credit cards. So F got TV while those in Y did not.

On the other hand Frontier's DirecTV system seems to be fairly problem free.

When CO finds out they are losing money the fix will come sooner! :) Is the system basically the same accross all airlines with it?

A new type of antenna would require an STC. This antenna swap is changing out the bad unit with one that has an approved modification and is accomplished with the appropriate engineering paperwork; no STC required.

Is this something that can be fixed in a hub or has to go to MCO for maintenance?

CO only gets a small cut of the revenue, plus they really are at the whim of LiveTV for fixing things.

CO's version of the system is definitely different than others' plus CO requires a CC swipe for all content versus JetBlue, for example, which only requires the swipe if you want the movies. So the failure rate might be the same per attempt but the number of attempts on CO is going to be much higher.

I experienced horrible signal distortion on a July CLE-LAX flight on ship 233.

On the ground, in the air, the entire journey the system was unwatchable. I really wonder what they did for pax that paid.

I was hoping others here would have ship numbers to watch out for...

If you write to WeCare, they will refund your purchase.

It would be nice to know what the best method of reset / reboot is for the DirecTV system is.

But, my big question is what if someone already swiped and activated their DirecTV, and then a reset is performed. Would they lose their payment and have to pay again? Would they get double charged?

No. Flew this week and they had to do a reboot about 20 min into the flight. I didn't have to swipe again.

On a separate note, for flights coming into the US, I wonder if a reboot inside the 200 mile mark would allow the system to be used. As of now, if the plane is parked OCONUS overnight and the system is booted not inside 200mi then DirecTV is not available the whole flight.

I was waiting for Jeff to cut me a check on the plane ORD-IAH last Friday for the Sat no working. didn't happen and no refund of miles!

On my 739ER flight IAH-LAX on Wednesday, the live TV signals were lost soon after we got to cruise altitude. They said they tried to reboot it but it never came back. Initially, I was very pissed since I already swiped my card, but then I found myself really enjoying Nurse Jackie and Californication.

I think I'll still write to CO about it, though I am not actually looking for a refund, since I was entertained.

Are you saying that paying $6 for watching 10-15 minutes of Nurse Jackie and Californication is good enough, or that you were entertained by watching the crew scurry back and forth to reboot the system?

AAAARRRRGGHHHH...this system....

Wish it was more reliable and that we had some official, effective way of resetting/rebooting (currently we don't). Very frustrating for all.

On my PHL-IAH flight last week the system would hiccup (screen went blank then a searching for signal message popped up and then finally it came back) for about 15 seconds every 10 minutes or so. I could understand if it was an isolated area but it occurred prior to takeoff, during takeoff and midflight. Although not as bad as my EWR-ORD flight when we ventured up into Canada and only the CO channels were available for 90% of the flight

There is a software update being put in place that is fixing this so it will just work now.

Flew MEX-EWR on September 7, and the signal came back automatically within the first hour.

Nurse Jackie and Californication are 2 of the ~10 recorded CO entertainment channels (along with a couple of movies, House, etc) that worked throughout the flight. What didn't work was the live DirecTV stuff. And I paid $4.

IAH-SEA last night on N73251 and the system would show video for 2 seconds but then search for a signal... for the entire 4:11 flight. Doesn't appear that CO has a 1KVoice equivalent, is there an email address for Plats that I should report this to?
