Excellent. In about three weeks I'll be in this same situation, with, hopefully, the same result :)

I am on a SJD-LAX flight today. At checkin agent said as star alliance gold members we are entitled to E+ and gave us a whole row of E+ to ourselves (Now I know what the agent said is not official policy) this flight also looks to be very leisure heavy so that could be a factor.

It's still case by case at IAH. At check-in they won't move you, but at the gate they usually will if there is room available.

At LAX last week, when I checked bags for a UA flight to OGG, I asked about E+. The agent [at the elite check-in] had to ask a colleague if I was eligible and the answer was yes.
On my return from OGG, I again asked at the counter and was offered E+.

CO Plat, went from ORD-MSP yesterday on UA metal, asked really nicely for E+ and was told they have to sell it to me for $19. Gate agent called the flight full even though it wasn't going to be (tons of upgrades). Once everyone was seated (E- was completely full), and with a number of E+ seats empty, the FA announced an offer of E+ for the same $19.

I did two award tickets on United to Japan with my GF a few weeks ago. I tried some rep surfing for fun. The girl at checkin, 2 different reps at the DEN RCC, 1 rep at the SFO RCC, and gate agent all said I had to pay. Eventually, I talked the gate agent into giving me a free upgrade to E+ and just charging my GF. I figured 50% off wasn't half bad on a long flight. It was much nicer than being near the bathroom and we had the whole row to ourselves.

So, haggling can potentially work if there are 2 of you.

I flew SEA-ORD today and I noticed that my full itinerary got upgraded to E+ without my asking so I assume that UA is starting to automatically upgrade CO status members. I'm CO Plat. Anyone else finding the same thing?

I flew BWI-DEN-SEA about a month ago. Automatically upgraded to E+ at check in for BWI-DEN. DEN agent told me I had to pay to get the upgrade to E+ for DEN-SEA (and of course that was a 757 :()

So I think the moral is there is still no reason to the upgrades. Unless because I'm CO Silver i only get 1 leg upgraded. LOL

The Sky is Falling!

I bought a UA ticket that contained CO codeshares and the COMPUTER automatically assigned me seats in the coveted CO 'premium seating' section  of coach. Obviously shenanigans on the part of the computer systems are taking place here :D (For those worried that this 1K might actually be comfortable on a CO flight, don't worry...they were window seats and I am an aisle guy.)

I flew UA two weeks ago and at the ticket counter got the $19 story; same thing at the gate, but then about two minutes before boarding the GA gave me exit row E+ at no charge. But - again, two weeks ago - maybe they are getting this thing figured out, finally.

Why do you ask?? Do you have a problem with the truth.

To quote a UA reservations agent: "E+ seats will fly empty before a OP Silver gets to sit in them without paying" I tried pointing out I was a *Silver too, but that was a wasted approach. CO put the panties on in this deal and allowed UA to put the pants on

HeathrowGuy Jun 17, 2010 8:22 am

E+ access is not yet a benefit for CO elites. Yes, I am critical of this because as I suggested the day before the merger was officially announced, I think CO and UA could have generated alot of goodwill for elites on both sides by implementing day of departure only reciprocal E+/ELR access prior to the full reciprocal rollout planned later this year. But until reciprocity goes offical, take any E+ seats as the gift that they are.

And don't call E+ seats an upgrade, don't want to give folks in Houston or Chicago any idears for the merged carrier's FFP. ;)

I checked in at LIH early and the UA agent says I was lucky to even get a seat because the plane is oversold, and then she proceeded to upsell me on the E+ seat. She went dead silent when I asked her, if I'm so lucky to get the seat I paid for because its oversold, how can you be upselling me an empty seat? But at least I now know that 18 empty seats is equivalent to being "oversold"
