Calling FTers!! A Different Kind of Postcard Project

Over the years FTers have posted in Community asking that postcards get sent to them or their children, usually for a child's school project. And FTers have come through in spades. ^

I'd like to ask for FTers help w/ a postcard project, but it's not for a school assignment.

Some of you are aware my sister's been diagnosed w/ an agressive form of breast cancer. They say it's curable, but obviously it's going to be a long year in getting there (treatment goes through next April).

In the women's forum there is a thread on tips & things you can do to help a person with cancer. One of the posts mentioned sending postcards or notes, and one FTer sent me a couple of cards (thanks kipper! ) to send to Cheryl spaced out over time.

I started thinking about postcards when I was stuck in traffic today, and where to get some locally. But then that started me thinking well, what about some that aren't local? How would I get those? And then I thought - FTers!

So if you would be willing to send a postcard either from where you live or where you're traveling to or when you're at a Do that I could forward on to my sister, I would greatly appreciate it.

I know some will say how will Cheryl feel about getting postcards from FTers - ie, people she doesn't know? Glad you asked. Cheryl's actually met a few FTers already, and hears me talk about them all the time usually by handle, so she feels like she knows quite a few even without having met then. In fact I confused her a couple of weeks ago when I referred to an FTer by their real name instead of their handle. :p

I became actively involved w/ FT at beginning of '03, and Thanksgiving weekend Cheryl was visiting me. I invited wingless and auh2o for mid-morning mimosas (buck fizz to the Brits) & to meet Cheryl. wingless asked Cheryl, "so - how do you feel about your sister being involved w/ FT?" Cheryl, "I don't know. Never heard of it. Is it a cult?" LOL. Well yes Cheryl it is! A wonderful one! :)

Since then Cheryl's met some more FTers, heard me talk about airline, hotel points (yes, I even got her to sign up for Hilton Honors!), and has heard about the Dos all over the world. She's asked if Spiff really flies from Point A to Point B via Points C,D,E & F (yes he does!). And we know she's absorbed the culture when one day, in response to my complaining about my airline miles balance being depleted, she responded, "Well, do a mileage run". :D

If you're willing to send a postcard from where you live or biz or Do travels take you (you can write anything on the card - Hello from Hawaii, Eating dim sum in SIN, it's hot in NYC in the summer) & sign it with your handle (ie, SkiAdcock on FT), I'd greatly appreciate it. And I think as the year goes on, Cheryl will appreciate getting colorful postcards in the mail.

Right now Cheryl is staying with friends as she goes through her initial treatment. She lives 3 hours from where she's being treated, and the friends have been a godsend in terms of support & being close to the cancer center. I'll alternate working out of home in LA & then her home during the next year. Because Cheryl will be splitting time between both places (friends when I can't be there & her home when I can), it would be easier if postcards are sent to me & then I'll forward them to her spaced out over time, rather than provide an address where she might not be when the postcard is sent.

So if you're willing to help w/ this different type of postcard project, please PM me & I'll send you my address. Thanks for your help, and please keep my sister in your thoughts & prayers.

BTW - I've promised Cheryl that when she gets through all this I'll give her an int'l F ticket to celebrate. I figure she already has incentive to get well (ie, living), but a wee bit of FT incentive can't hurt ;)

Cheers.

Did you bring her to a SeaDo a couple of years ago? If so, I remember her. I am presently in El Valle de Anton, Panama. P.M. me quick please as I leave Friday a.m.

My best to her.

PM on the way from PM.

SkiAdcock Jun 11, 2008 5:12 pm

Thank you all so much!

I'd also like to add that if you're US-based & don't want to incur the (sometimes higher) cost of postage from overseas (even though you're overseas at the time), I doubt that Cheryl will actually look at the postmark, so feel free to mail it when you get back to the US. And for those willing to mail from overseas (and the US folk as well), I'll certainly reimburse you via Paypal any postage if you need it.

Cheers.

Sharon:

A friend of ours and teacher at my wife's school was one of the beneficiaries of a post card campaign. If your sister gets just half of the results that I have seen from the FT Community, she will be entertained for many many days reading all of the cards.

Good luck and God speed.

You are all in my prayers.

Please PM the appropriate information.

PM from the BRT tour guide.

Ski, If it will cheer up Cheryl, she can join us on 21 June on the Brooklyn Tour as my guest. I can guarantee she'll forget her problems for a while, as she'll get bored to death listening to various legendary tales about DO's and mileage runs. ;) And don't forget the drama. :D

Thank you so much for the offer. I'll pass it on, but I think Cheryl's pretty much going to be sticking close to home during the next year.

Cheers.

Thanks all. Much appreciated. tom911 was trying to find a 'mind the gap' postcard from London (Cheryl loves that phrase), but couldn't find one so Cheryl will have to settle for a pic of Prince William instead! Cheers.

Revenge is sweet!

The closest place where I can buy postcards is the city of Safed, about 20 kilometers from my house. As a tourist city, it has loads of postcards. The trouble is that it is very hilly and I am not allowed to walk up and down hills for the next few weeks, so Safed was out.

The next closest town is Kiryat Shemona. It is roughly 30 kilometers away. The problem there is that is not a place which attracts a lot of tourists and, hence, postcards are a rarity.

Still, I can walk in Kiryat Shemona and so I headed there today. I managed to find two postcards -- one of Tel Aviv and one of Haifa. Neither was particularly nice, but as I have never met Sharon in person, I felt that they were good enough and got them both.

I never met Sharon in person? I NEVER MET SHARON IN PERSON! That thought suddenly hit me big time. Sharon had indicated that she might attend the Tel Aviv Meet I hosted a few years ago, but didn't make it. Ditto for the Venice Meet (co-hosted by Obscure2K) and the four PBI-FLL Meets I hosted along with TKey75 and MrKEY.

Sharon has turned down all of my meets!!!!

I decided that revenge was in order and picked up a picture book of Israeli history and art, which I will put in the envelope along with the postcards. This, in turn, makes it logical for me to send the entire package by EMS -- and that's where the revenge comes in.

EMS delivers at any time from 8 am to 10 pm, seven days a week, and never lets you know in advance when they will show up. You have to sign for the package and if you aren't at home you have to make arrangements for them to hold it at the Post Office for you. If you don't, they return the thing.

So, Sharon, you had better not plan on going to anyone else's meets for the next 4 to 10 days. EMS can show up at any time during that period.

Revenge is so sweet!

ozstamps Jun 17, 2008 11:22 am

Sharon as you know my business is stamps and postcards etc, so I'll send her a set of 6 diff glossy cards with Ozzie Dinosaurs, each with different Dinosaur stamp, and even a set of Australian Antarctic Territory cards with AAT wildlife etc -

Had I seen this 2 days back, I could have mailed her a card from Cuba! They have some doozies. :D

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...e/ebd9c0c5.jpg

I'll add tips on the cards as to how to get you thrown out of the Groucho Club in London .. might come in handy for her! ;)

Let me have the mailling address please.

Wainwright Jun 17, 2008 3:10 pm

yhpm

I can pick one up here, and try and get a couple along my travels. Had I seen this earlier I would have snagged one while I was at the U.S. Open this weekend. Of course there are some who owe me favors..:p

Is there anything I should look for that she loves/hates/laughs at every time?

SkiAdcock Jun 18, 2008 10:14 pm

Any type would be great Wainwright! Thank you so much.

On a sadder note, I landed from LHR today w/ multiple messages on my cell phone from the family. A young cousin of Cheryl & me (mine?) died in a head-on collision (not his fault; other driver's). So we're trying to deal w/ that. The phrase 'only the good die young' popped into my mind, and his mom (my aunt) is holding on by her fingernails. She doesn't have a lot of $$, so in leiu of the flower thing Cheryl & I are going to send $$ to help pay for the funeral. And I heard from a relative that they changed Cheryl's chemo so I'm hoping that's good rather than bad. I'm very skittish about that stuff (they switched my mom's & she didn't make it).

I'm headed over to my p.o. box tomorrow, so hope to pick up the first few of "Operation Cheryl Postcard". Again, many, many thanks to you all!!!!

Cheers.

Jassy-50 Jun 19, 2008 12:55 pm

Hi Sharon,

A pm is coming your way from Alameda. I also have some postcards from Mr.J's and my recent vacation to Bavaria. I'm a member of Postcrossing.com so am into the postcard "thing" and have a ready supply. Will send them at spread-out intervals to help your sister through the next few difficult months. And will be thinking good thoughts for her!

On a sadder note, I am so sorry to hear about your cousin. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

Jackie

you will also receive a PM from me in a few moments - I'll gladly contribute a few postcards.
