Never been there, but the reviews I read on line make it sound like something I'd be up for!
Can't speak for our mystery guest or her +1, but it did seem to have good variety, and wasn't terribly expensive.

i'm gonna toss another restaurant in for consideration.....

last night i was at one my favorite haunts (via veneto on fillmore) and i asked the owner (a very good friend of mine) if he knew of anything good in north beach and since we were not going to visit him ;), he recommended ristorante ideale.

any thoughts?

My thought is: "Is it in North Beach? In that case, I'll vote against it..." :)

How about something in the Metreon area (4th and Mission/Howard)? There's a "food court"-like area there with lots of seating, and four excellent establishments providing real food (Firewood, Buckhorn, Noodle House and a Mexican place)...

It has the advantage that people can order/get their own food and all not arriving at the same time isn't a problem. It's close to BART, not far from CalTrain, and it's a nice part of town near lots of things of interest to tourists (Yerba Buena gardens, MoMA, Union Square) and for the masochists who insist on driving in/to SF there are lots of parking garages and even somewhat realistic chance of finding street parking...

re:North Beach

How about L'Osteria del Forno? The food there is VERY good and it's very small, so we would have to reserve well in advance.

Goalie, put me down as a "possible, maybe".It depends on how stupid things are when I get back from my Sept. longhaul.

Very similar to my thoughts about Michaelangelo.
Got good reviews, sounded very reasonably priced, and with nice atmosphere.

Since I have a reasonable idea that all 3 of those might be of interest to our guest, I'd say it's fine with me.
If we don't need reservations, I'd say let the out of towners decide. ;)

If you decide to go with North Beach...

...I would recommend Tommaso's. Some of the best pizza in the City, cooked in the first wood fired pizza oven on the west coast. A San Francisco institution. Only problem is that they do not take reservations (though perhaps they would bend for a large group--I once booked a large group there before opening). http://tommasosnorthbeach.com/

I would have "DUG" to see this particular FTer and her daughter in SF at this super-duper-dinner, but alas I have business guests in that weekend from Germany. I believe, however, that I will see this particular pair in NY during this same trip, and perhaps a month earlier in SYD....

I shamefully admit I forgot about this and definitely won't make it. Have fun everyone!

DRATS!!!!! I will actually be in SF that weekend too! I fly in on that Friday but the whole reason is that I am attending my friends wedding on Saturday. (Ed and Andrew are tying the knot before they try to repeal the law in November!) They are having their wedding and reception at a B&B up in Russian River country on Saturday night. I then fly home on Sunday afternoon.

Have a great time though.....
