Thanks for the replies.
Also, for anyone coming up for more than just a mileage run (in other words, someone who's actually going to take a few days to see Alaska's beauty! ;)), I have a copy of the 2007 Milepost I'd be more than happy to loan out. It's almost a necessity when driving out on Alaska's rural roads. If you don't get first dibs on it or you want the 2008 version (I thought I bought one, but I guess not), it's only $13 or so at Costco (half of list price). It would be an honor and a pleasure to leave you with my copy. Man that is one big book...i swear it would take longer to page through that thing than the short Itime will actually be in your glorious state. ;) Oh and that was me that superscot mentioned re: breakfast on the 6th. i get in the night before at midnight so it's actually a wee bit early for me too but odds are my NYC-based body clock will be too screwed up to notice |
My buddy and I have arrived in MIA safely and returned to our family. We had a great trip in Alaska and I personally am looking forward to the next one. I just hope CO will release another $200+ V- fare MIA-ANC :D
I want to thank jackal and Bob W for taking the time to meet with us for a late lunch. I want to especially thank jackal for his assistance in our trip to ANC. I owe you and will be happy to return the favor when you're in South Florida. Thanks again and safe travels ^ |
Well, if there's room in your luggage to take back your Milepost, you're welcome to keep it as a memento of your trip (some of the photos in it are worth clipping out), as I can get one for (as I said) $13 at Costco (probably far cheaper than anyone else can get one outside of Alaska).
But if you do leave your copy, it will be considered the communal property of FlyerTalk and will certainly be available for anyone else to use! aSiAnRiCk, it was a pleasure to meet you and I look forward to our next visit! (I'll see if Seat 2A can wrestle me up a bear or two I can bring with...) Looking forward to meeting any and all who come! |

What's going on guys?
I'm typing this from our lodge near the Denali National Park. Very exhausted from all the hiking we've done in Denali. I'm convinced that the park rangers caught and hid all the bears from the public and instead released about a million Dall sheep, thousands hares, 20 caribous and about 10 moose to get us excited over :p Just got back from a whistlestop trip to Denali and I can confirm that grizzlies do exist there. One came out on the road and wandered pastour bus - I was no more than two feet from it - thankfully with a bus between it and me! |

Sorry to have missed you on Tuesday evening, RiCk. Had a very pleasant evening with jackal - the Alaska Summer Ale was really reviving after 24 hours straight flying.

I did see a bear and her two cubs but it was so far of a distance that even my friend's DSLR can't zoom in close enough :( |
ya' know, I was just about to clarify where exactly we are going to enjoy these beers then noticed jackal has stated the location pretty exact. Doh !!:o

My flight on Sunday departs at 8pm, so I'd be up for an early-ish dinner/snack as well.
Have tentative plans to drive up to Portage Glacier for the day. I'll be driving from Seward to ANC stopping at sights along the way. my cell isn't working down here but i can pick up messages assuming I have access to a landline. off to see me some fjords ... |

... Tuesday-Thursday 5pm-10pm, Friday, Saturday & Sunday 4:30pm-10pm, Closed Monday They are at http://www.doublemuskyinn.com/framed.html At the airport now waiting to leave the first heat wave. Somebody said to me this morning be careful out there it's hot. I said I'm going someplace way more comfortable. Where, Alaska? Yup. They just stared blindly. :D |
Heat wave! We're up to 60° right now!
I just edited the first post to reflect the Double Musky tomorrow at 5:00. I can move it up to 4:30 if that works better for everyone (that's when they open). Looking forward to meeting everyone. Mike, you able to make any of the events listed on page 1? Last, last call for lunch today at 1:30 at Orso downtown for anyone around! |
Had a great time meeting up with three separate FT parties yesterday! Superscot, who really is a super Scot, met up with Bob and I over lunch. Then, early in the evening, Global_Hi_Flyer and steve32 stopped by for a quick hello, and superscot dropped in with perfect timing to join us for a final round (I think all three were on the same flight to DFW). Finally, the big group (ten total) spent the last hours of the evening chatting it up over views of Era and PenAir turboprops heading out to remote Alaskan communities. (Oh--Bob, SeeYa, and I ran into Cordelli +1 in the halls on the way out, too; we didn't get a chance to chat for long, though! Hopefully he can make it to one of the other meets over the next couple of days!)
Wonderful to meet everyone, and I look forward to seeing you again in your and my travels! Things are winding down as the last of the mileage runners drop in, but it's not dead yet--still a couple gatherings left for the month of June, so if you're around, keep an eye out on the first post of this thread! |
It was great meeting everyone up in ANC. A big shout out to all the folks up there who were wonderful hosts!
Makes me want to plan a more extended trip up there sometime soon! :) - Andrew |
Just finished a wonderful brunch at the Snow City Cafe - highly recommended.
Is it just me or is Anchorage trapped in the late 80s/early 90s? I saw not one but two chain wallets on the bus. |
Great to meet the folks I've met on two quick-turns to ANC. Two on last week's flight, and Jackal, SuperScot, and Steve32 this weekend.

Right now, I'm sitting in front of the Double Musky restaurant in Girdwood waiting for a couple others to show up...it's about 30 minutes south of Anchorage, but you're welcome to drive down and join! (You'd only be 15 minutes late if you get this immediately after I post it...) Global_Hi_Flyer--great to have (briefly) met you, too! |
