Third Frankfurt Advents DO
12 December – 14 December 2008



After some planning, we would like to announce the third Frankfurt Advents DO on December 12th–December 14th 2008.

As last year, we will update this post every now and then. Depending on the number of attendants we will finally decide if everything can be done as planned by the end of October / beginning November.

Here is the planned schedule for this weekend.

Friday, 12 December 2008

The Do will start with a concert in the church organized by the Frankfurt Leo’s at 07:00 pm.

The concert will start at 07:00 pm in Nikolaikirche (location on google maps)

The concert is a charity concert organised by the Leo's Kaiserstadt (Leos is the youth organisation of the Lions clubs) and the singers and musician will mostly be students and amateurs. There is no entrance fee, but you can make a donation for the project supported by them. This year they are collection money for a place where handicapped people are offered to work and supported in their social living, since this is importand for those.

You can hear i.a. the choir of university of Frankfurt, the brass ensemble Ars Sonoris playing works of Haydn, Mozart and Gounod as well as traditional christmas songs.

The duration of the concert will be around 90 minutes. That means, you will be probably arrive later for dinner if you join the concert for the performance.

After the concert we will head for dinner.

There will be unfortunately no LH event this year.

During this time, the Frankfurt Christmas Market takes place. If you are looking for some presents, you could stroll over the Christmas Market on Saturday afternoon and enjoy a glass of Glühwein or warm “Appelwoi”. There are several nice cafés to have a cup of coffee or tea, visit one of the many museums or just relax in your hotel. We will post some information about exhibitions in the Frankfurter museums in this time in the next couple of weeks if they are available.

Interesting exhibitions during the DO:
Deutsches Filmmuseum has an exhibition about photographer Jim Rakete
In Schirn Kunsthalle are two special exhibitions, one showing paintings of Peter Doig, the other paintings of René Margritte.
Famous Städel Museums shows paintings of Flémalle und Rogier van der Weyden and art of Auguste Rodin with a strong focus on his piece “Faun” he created around 1885.
If you are interested in architecture, a visit of Deutsches Architekturmuseum and its exhibition about the “Hochhaus Preis” (price about the best high rise building in the world) donated by the Museum.


Walking tour to some places of interest in downtown Frankfurt, meeting point 15:00

I will offer a short walking tour to the main places of interest in downtown Frankfurt on Saturday afternoon. We will meet at 15:00 at the fountain in front of “Alte Oper” and make a tour along Helaba Tower, Goethe Haus, Cathedral and some other places. If we have time, we will make a visit at a famous place for chocolate (“Bitter & Zart”) near the cathedral.

Drinks around 18:00

We will head for/meet at the Christmas Market.

We will leave xmas markte around 18:30 for the restaurant.

We will have dinner around 19:00 at Zum Feuerrädchen. English Menues are available, but they will only accept cash, no credit cards. If you like to have a vegetarian meal, please send a PM to either FLYGVA or cathaana. Location of restaurant

The costs for the huge brunch buffet which consits of cold and hot dishes, salads, fish (last year oysters were available), sushi, rolls, pastries, ice cream, etc. ist 42 EUR / per Person. Credit Cards and SPG Cards are accepted.

Public transportation
If one take S-Bahn from airport into downtown is level 4 (Preisstufe 4)

Single Journey 3,60 EUR / dayticket 8,90 EUR

The dayticket will also cover downtown Frankfurt (area 5000 on the ticket vending machine, airport is 5090).

If you take public transportation from the airport into Frankfurt and think you will use the subway again, I would recommend a day pass (if you make three single journeys a day, than a day pass is cheaper).

Single Journey in downtown Frankfurt is 2.20 EUR / dayticket is 5.60 EUR

The ticket for Sunday has to include the airport area. If you leave after brunch from the airport and do not return, I recommend a single ticket.

All major hotel chains have hotels in Frankfurt. Public transportation is very good, so even if hotels a bit far away from city centre (e.g. ArabellaSheraton Kongreß; Holiday-Inn City South Conference Center) are not really a problem.

Although with the trees in full bloom, it is a bit frightening to think of Lebkuchen und Glühwein, I am looking forward to it again. Danke! ^

...after missing out the last 2 times - I (and hopefully verveine) will absolutely try to make it this year and take the opportunity to finally see more of this place than just the B-terminal SEN Lounge :-)

The Advents Brunch again sounds good - please put me down as a maybe. :)

They might be too scared now... But maybe we get the inaugural flight with the pre-delivered A380 (HAHA).

We should all book a cheapo oneway FRA-DUS/MUC/TXL go into the SEN lounge, empty the bar and then call LH to cancel the trip, getting everything back except 4EUR... or making HON until December for the FCT :p

Good that I know nobody takes me serious anyways...

I know I will be in Frankfurt during that time, but don't yet know how many events I can make it to. Put me down as a definite for the Do - we'll see about individual events closer to the date.
