I have double booked reservations at both the Geylang and Esplande No Signboard Seafood locations for Saturday, Jan. 14 at 7PM. We will meet at the Conrad lobby at 6:30PM.
I won't be able to get the 10% discount that MJM got because he has to be present with his VIP card. The total cost (when you consider taxi if we go to Geylang) should be about S$55-$60 per person, it will depend one how much we eat and drink. Please post you preference, if any, on which location you prefer. I would like to cancel the second reservation by Jan 3. Echo my thanks as well for your effort and would like to defer to which location you think is best. Happy New Year to eveyone. |
In spite of my earlier expressed preference, I am completely flexible and open and was later thinking that for any first timers in the group the Geylang shop is the more authentic Singapore experience.
|
Since this will be my first Singapore exploration, I have no problem with either place. I am staying at the Sheraton and Dave's note mentioned one over the other due to location but it won't make any difference to me.
|
My vote goes to Geylang.
|
It looks like I will be able to attend Dinner on Saturday! I have changed around my flights by a day, and I will arrive at Changi at 20.15 on the 13th from AKL on SQ 286. I have just enough time for Dinner (4h 50min layover) before I continue from SIn to ZRH on SQ346.
So, I strongly vote for Geylang, this will allow me to spend an additional 30-45 minutes with all of you! Can anybody advise whether traffic would normally be a problem getting from Changi to Geylang? It seems the MRT is 7 mins travel time for the Changi Shuttle + 11 mins for the ride to the Aljunied MRT stop. This in turn seems to be a 500m walk to the hotel. So, if traffic would be a problem, I'd take the MRT. If not, I'd opt for a taxi as a route planner is telling me this is a 15km ride taking about 15mins. Including the 5$ Changi surcharge on a Saturday evening I would expect to pay about 15 SGD for the cab - which seems fair enough. |

My wife and I will be attending. Arriving on UA 803 at 11:59pm on the 11th and staying until the 17th. Sign us up for the Friday and Saturday activities except lunch on Saturday. It looks like Sunday is still a bit in flux but we are up something. It's our first trip to Singapore.
We are staying at the Oriental. |

Also, congratulations tannebil for joining the 100 post club. |
What time might we be meeting for drinks @ New Asia Bar at the Swissotel The Stamford, Friday evening, I wonder? May I suggest 10 pm. From there, we can take a taxi to Lau Pa Sat, to meet arriving UA fliers who are still able to walk and talk. :)
|
Thanks restless. We can try but our connection might be a bit tight for an RCC stop. UA875 from SEA doesn't arrive until 3:55pm so if there is any delay, we will be going directly to the gate.
I'm in 8E on UA803 if we miss in the RCC. |
guess I'll miss all the fun... I'll be in SIN 3 weeks after (feb 3-7)... maybe the next one then... you guys have a great time.

Greetings tannebil! I note on perusing this thread, that newself, unagi1 and I will also be on UA803 Jan.11. May I suggest we meet in the NRT RCC prior to the flight. I'm arriving from SFO. I'll have the yellow flyertalk luggage tag on my hand luggage, and will likely be in the computer room trying to snag one of the few Internet computers there. :)

I will be in SIN next week if anyone is around. I am staying at the Conrad.
|
Please sign me up for the Sunday activities.
I fly out on Monday 1/15: UA 804 SIN-NRT UA 890 NRT-LAX UA 930 LAX-SFO I am staying at the Conrad 1/13 and 1/14. |
Count me in for the DO again this year!
I would be glad to do another walk around Sinapore. Sad to say though that I am only available on Saturday. does that collide with the program? What is the plan anyway? Is there a link somewhere? Let me know, see ya next week. |
I decided to Priceline too. Got the Conrad for 3 nights (12-15) at S$105/night.
1/2 of what my rate was before.^ |
Does anyone know if it is yet settled on where the Sat dinner is.
|
Sadly, we just had to cancel our trip. :( We are just way too busy to be gone for a week right now. At least that opens up two more seats in biz for anybody who was wait-listed.
January is traditionally a busy month for us, but we will try again next year. |

Now, I'm back in Singapore, my home country. I've been an avid FTer for a few years now, and I'm glad many of you have decided a MR or DO to Singapore. I would be happy to join my fellow FTers for drinks at Swissotel Friday nite. 10pm is it? How will I be able to recognize this group? As I've been away from 'home' too long, maybe it's a wise idea to join the Saturday walking tour too! (time permitting) Looking forward to meeting up. Welcome to Singapore. |

I'll be carrying my camera with my yellow flyertalk.com luggage tag attached. Perhaps I should also wear the large name tag I got at the November London DO (which says I'm restless). :) |
I have no preference to the No Signboard location. Either way the wind blows is fine with me.
Saturday is perfect for the walking tour. What time will that start? Where? This Leaves Sunday open... ... Someone has to have a Sunday afternoon agenda idea How about the hop on, hop off bus tour... ha ha ha ... Sunday eve has had Night Safari in the past? Any intrest in going? |
Please count me in for the walking tour on Saturday.
Unfortunately, Sunday is out since I am schlepping to Senai to catch the 1305 MAS flight to Kuching. |
miles4all, glad to see you will be there to lead the Singapore
walking tour! Saturday afternoon was in fact the time that it was tentatively scheduled for, so that should be perfect. I may join you all - let's set a time and place - the Raffles Long Bar again? Maybe at 2pm? |

I'm here
I just want to inform you that I have arrived in SIN this morning. Flight was very smooth, service outstanding. The new 77W looks great. This was actually my first flight ever on SQ metal, and certainly not my latest.
Unfortunately I got a foodpoisoing some days before, and I wasn't able to eat at all :( :( No Krug, no caviar for me... too bad. It's a pitty, because I was really looking forward to this flight, especially because of the new First Class I was booked on. At least my flight back will be on SQ again, so I have another chance. I'm very happy to see you guys on Friday, and I'll bring over a FT baggage tag as well of course. |
Oh, and I forgot to add that I have a special Flyertalk "member" carrying on with me: Sir Freddy Junior, living at the house of miles in Colorado....

The vote was a tie -- 4 for Esplanade and 4 for Geylang. The were 5 votes with hanging chads. So I will break the tie by casting my vote for the Esplanade because of convenience and wanting to try a different place.
|
Read the schedule and it seems fine to me. Lunch does need to be at 12 sharp, so that we can make our way collectively by taxis to the Long Bar around 13.30. Then we can have one drink and set of for the walk. I will do a slightly different walk this year (of course!).
After the walk we can do happy hour again at Boat Quay, like last year. That was quite relaxing. Maybe Harry's bar, as it is so famous or another place around there. Sweet Willie, do you want to add happy hour into the planning for around 17.00h on Saturday. The walk from Boat Qauy to Esplenade is quite short (if we do not drink too much). Cheers |

See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showp...&postcount=191. As mentioned in the other thread, Freddie Jr. is currently enjoying Auckland with me before we head to Sin for Dinner on the 13th. |
Sweet Willie and GFowler,
I just looked through the summaries in posts 106 to 110, and it seems I'm not on the list. I hope I'm allowed to join! Am really looking forward to this, and have my plans made! (Note that f4freeJunior and f4free are not the same person ....) As mentioned before, I have been able to rearrange my flights so I can attend dinner on the 13th. Unfortunately, due to stopover restrictions on my caviar run I can really just come for dinner. I will arrive at Changi at 20.15 on the 13th from AKL on SQ 286. I have just enough time for Dinner (4h 50min layover) before I continue from SIN to ZRH on SQ346. Due to the short time I have in SIN, I strongly plead to all of you to please have dinner at Geylang. I am not familiar with traffic on a Saturday evening, but considering MRT travel times I will probably loose at least 20 mins each way if I have to go from the airport to the Esplanade rather than Geylang. (So, it would shorten the quality time I can spend with all of you by roughly 45 mins.) Of course, if the reservation at Geylang has been cancelled already due to the outcome of the vote, I won't complain and be happy to come to the Esplanade ... (Pending your confirmation of my attendance.) Oh, one more thing ... Juniors foodpoisening must have really impacted his memory. Poor guy. Freddie Jr. is definitely with me in AKL, I just doublechecked after seeing Juniors post. |

Bizarre. I had just randomly picked SIN for this weekend before working in PVG next week and just now I find out there is a Flyertalk Do going on. I'll try to join in on some of the drink sessions if I can. I have a couple of business meetings Saturday, but we'll see.
I go to SIN about 10 times a year if anyone needs any local tips. I usually stay at either the Oriental or the IC Bugis and will be at the IC this time. Cya |
