BEYFlyer Sydney DO - Thursday 26th October
Okay, so here’s the deal… If there aren’t any more surprises between now and then, I should be in Sydney for a couple of days towards the end of October and I thought if there are a few FTers down there (and in the surrounding areas), I might as well call for a Sydney DO so we can all meet up. Actually, it was BiziBB who twisted my arm into doing this after learning (from a post I made on the Australia Forum) that I will be in Sydney next month :D . I had originally planned to go there in early August, but we all know what happened in Lebanon in mid-July. It would be great to meet as many fellow FTers as possible, so let’s see if we can me this work.
I have never planned a “DO” before (well, except for our mini-DOs here in Beirut), so any help/input would be much appreciated. BiziBB and I exchanged a few ideas/times and based on my schedule of events, it looks like a DO on Thursday, October 26 would work best for me. I was thinking something along the lines of “after working hours”, so around 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. so those of you who work in the city can just join us from work. Now this “DO” can be limited to just a meeting where we all consume mass quantities of alcoholic beverages or we could do that and then proceed to some good establishment where we could soak up all that alcohol with a good greasy meal. Again, this is the first time I organize something like this, so if it all sounds a bit “messy” then please forgive me. Obviously, I don’t have any venues for this gathering yet. I do have a few suggestions and I seem to like the idea of meeting up at the hotel for drinks (will be at the Hyatt on Thursday) and then going out somewhere for more drinks and something to eat (Pier 26 was a suggestion that stuck in my mind). Obviously if we have a large group of people, then we can just meet up at a spot somewhere for drinks and/or dinner (other than the hotel). Again, I'm shooting from the hip here, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated. So, is it possible? Can we have a Sydney DO on October 26? Answers on a postcard please… Okay, just kidding… Please post below and let me know what your thoughts are. Cheers, Naji =============================== Update, October 23 Meet up for drinks at 7:00 p.m. at Cafe Sydney. Dinner at 8:30 p.m. at Cafe Sydney. Please confirm A.S.A.P. by adding your comments to this thread. |
BEYFlyer - well I am sure those of us here in Sydney would be pleased to buy a drink or three for you after all your recent harrowing experiences in Beiruit that many of us lived through via you and Dovster's epic 350,000 page view thread. ^
(As long as you promise that lecherous Dovster geek will not be helping you with your baggage downunder???) I am sure there will be enought Flyertalkers around to catch up for an interesting dinner somewhere central. Margaret and I fly out to Maine to leaf peep a few days later, but October 26 looks good to us right now I think. ^ |
If you are staying at the Hyatt in the Rocks area you are not really in walking distance of Darling Harbour which is where Pier 26 is. (Where we had those buckets of king prawns etc before our Harbour cruise for anyone who was at OzFest #2.)
There are literally 100s of places in the Rocks area to eat and drink. If you are in the Rocks do visit the street Markets on Saturday and Sunday. Margaret and I stayed overnight at the historic old Mercantile Hotel last Saturday and sat around most of Sunday people watching, and one of us was even drinking endless pints of Guinness. :p It is only 100 yards from the Hyatt. Food at that place was amazingly cheap for anywhere in the CBD (about $A15 main course average) and we had dinner, breakfast and lunch there. Huge servings. And Irish music to savour it with. I have a couple of Ent. Books with 2 for 1 and 25% off coupons, so unless anyone has a better plan we can pick somewhere in there and save a few bucks, which seems to be most FT'ers primary hobby. :) If you are in town for a few days you are welcome to borrow them - not sure if you are travelling alone of with someone, but of course most coupons are 2 for 1 type deals. Any chance Friday October 27th?
I would love to meet BEYFlyer but can't make Thursday 26th October. Any chance the Do could be on Friday 27th October? ;) Here's hoping...

Kevin ..... remember Fridays in the CBD are an under 25's zoo, with every stockbroker and office worker and banker whooping it up in every place that sells booze and food. :)
What exact days is BEYFlyer in town? ... maybe Wednesday will be less frantic still if that fits in? Glen |
I'll be flying in from SIN on the 25th of October (early evening) and departing SYD on the 30th (early morning). Unfortunately, I have already made plans for the 27th - 29th.

BEYFlyer, I am afraid that I can't make it to the Land of Oz but I suggest that you mention this do on the "FlyerTalk scoops..." thread.
You just might wind up setting an Oz record for Do attendees. |
Thanks for the suggestion Dov. I'll also put it up as my signature... Let's see if I can do this right...
