There should be a "slumming in Phoenix" lunch. The best Mexican food, in the not the best locations. Carolina's on 12st and Mohave, Garcia's Original (Take out building) on 35th Ave and Encanto.

Yeah, and Macayo's is at the top of my suckiest Mexican food restaurants. Geeesh, are we letting some Minnesota guy pick these places out? :) I remember the one time I ate Mexican food in Idaho in the 80's. Shudder.

I had absolutely delicious Mexican food in Fargo, North Dakota last week. :D

Maybe enough Mexicans have immigrated since then the 80's. :) Unless the "Mexican" food you ate was Taco Hell? ;)

1 extra movie ticket - Wednesday - Flags of our Fathers

I get some passes to free movie sneak previews every now and again. I got a pair to go tomorrow night, but will only use one. You have to be at the theatre a bit early, usually by 6:15 or 6:20. If anyone is in town, and wants to see this movie, PM me. If more than one other person wants to come, I might be able to sneak 1-2 more in.

Movie: Flags Of Our Fathers (Directed by Clint Eastwood)
Date: Wednesday, October 11, 2006
Time: 7:00 PM
Place: Harkins Arizona Mills 24 (I10 & US60 Freeways - Tempe)
Rating: R

I think you and VJ should duke it out over the best place to showcase PHX Mexican cuisine as I expect nothing but the best if you start talking trash. ;)

/Just kidding...presumably, there is lunch to be eaten on Saturday, too, so I'm sure people would be all ears :)

Nah, I just like to give you guys a hard time. Remember, I've eaten Mexican food in Idaho in the 80's, so I can eat almost anything. The places I really like, are all very local places, with super humble settings. However, I've seen city councilmen and even the mayor at some of these places during lunch.

Count me in for Saturday night's dinner.

Believe it or not..... and I'm sure you won't..... the most memorable Mexican meal I've had was about 12 years ago--- in Fargo! Was it some place a block from a mall with Daytons??

Re. PHX Mexican food, I still haven't been impressed with anything. I chose Macayos and Bill Johnsons due to location: something of local flavor with Macayos being a 10 min. city bus ride from the airport, walking distance then to the Poetry Slam, and walking distance to later options including shopping, movies, brew pubs/bars, etc. Bill Johnsons is convenient for people coming in on one day runs, overnighting in PHX, staying at one of the 3 Trip Rewards properties for free that are walking distance from the restaurant. So, being a planner, I was thinking of overall logistics for visitors moreso than gourmet quality food.

See you all this weekend!

Ugh

I am (unfortunately?) being sent to Hawaii so I have to back out. I will have a bunch of goodies if someone can swing by my office & pick them up (I'm near the airport).

:(

Oh, the Mexican food I had in Idaho was pretty memorable as well. It looked like cottage cheese instead of sour cream on top of my enchilada. I won't go into further sensory detail, as I don't want to sicken the rest of the DO attendees. :)

I'm in town right now. I'm gonna try to make it to the Dinner tonight at Macayos (hey, I like that place, it's not as good as Carolina's, or even Rosita's which is just down the road from Macayos), but the food is not bad and the location can't be beat). Right now I'm 90% sure I'm going tonight.

BTW, if anybody has the 2006 Entertainment Book, there's a coupon for "50% Off Up to 4 Admissions" to the Challenger Space Center in Peoria. It's coupon #C146. Although I can't make it to the Challenger Space Center event tomorrow, I'll bring my coupon to Macayos tonight and give it to anybody who is going.
