Hartford. How about Greenwich or Stamford? :o

Seriously, what about that famous pizza place in New Haven?

Review
“Pizza that will change your life” is the answer admirers give for why it’s “worth standing in a blizzard for an hour” for the “perfect”, “crispy, thin-crust” Neapolitan-style pies at this 80-year-old “New Haven institution” where “the poor service is part of the legendary charm”; surveyors swear “the clam pies are the eighth wonder of the world” and the chief reason why this “local treasure” “has a special place in the hearts and arteries of many.”

BTW. New Haven has several other great pizza places. Maybe someone can chime in with additional info.

Please don't do a Friday night (traffic).

izzik Apr 10, 2006 6:17 pm

ooh.. New Haven DO! ;) ^ I'd be up for that..

cordelli Apr 10, 2006 8:55 pm

I'm a certain maybe.

thelark Apr 10, 2006 10:39 pm

I'm fine with New Haven, just threw Hartford out there to try to get some MA ppl or people from the northern part of the state. Of course, both could also work :)

Try Modern:

Modern Apizza Place
(203) 776-5306
874 State St
New Haven, CT 06511

Great pizza, friendly joint.

And, your hubcaps will still be on your car when you come out. Unless BDLORD's in town. ;)

thelark Apr 11, 2006 8:43 am

There is also Sally's...my only concern would be the 'no reservations' policies at Sally's and Pepe's (don't know about Modern).

flygirl555 Apr 11, 2006 12:35 pm

I would also vote for:

Reins Deli (rte 30 vernon 860 875-1344 exit 65 off i-84) for pastrami, Hot Tomato's in downtown Hartford (amazing garlic bread!), and the Mystic Seaport / Aquarium!

Unfortunately, I would not be able to attend if it is in mid-May (so I guess I don't get a vote). :p

Efrem Apr 11, 2006 1:17 pm

Speaking for myself and not anyone else from Mass., I'd go as far as Hartford (includes Rein's, of course) in a heartbeat, but anyplace past there toward NYC would mean I have to think about it. Not that I definitely wouldn't go, but it wouldn't be as automatic.

(I'm away from May 20 through about June 10, so that may rule me out anyhow.)

thelark Apr 11, 2006 2:54 pm

Pastis and Trumbull Kitchen could also be possible Hartford venues.

PresRDC Apr 12, 2006 12:00 pm

Glad to see that you took the initiative here, thelark, after I dropped the ball earlier.

I'm in, provided my scheudle allows. Mid May is going to be tough as I will likely be needed in Shanghai around that time.

If there is interest in doing it in Hartford, I'd reccomend West Hartford as it is certainly a more fun venue than downtown Hartford. Perhaps The Elbow Room would be a good venue/

flygirl555 Apr 18, 2006 3:24 pm

Any update on a date for this? There is a possibility I will be in the BDL area for business sometime in mid-to-late June...

thelark May 8, 2006 9:12 am

How about Wed. May 24th 7:30pm Trumbull Kitchen in Hartford?

It's better for me in New Haven, Westport, Norwalk, Stamford or Greenwich. Did you notice a westerly pattern? ;)

I'm out for Hartford, even if flygirl is coming. ;)

thelark May 16, 2006 9:32 am

Ok, I am going to suggest Wednesday, June 14th 7:30 pm at Hot Tomato's in New Haven. Please post if you can attend.

Couldn't do May 24 (see my post #9) but can do the 14th. New Haven is about my westerly limit coming from Massachusetts the far side of Providence. Put me down as a maybe.

Finally, a chance to meet some other FT'ers. Mrs DxT and I are definite. ^

kenfry May 16, 2006 1:36 pm

I can do that....

Ken
(weekend Hamden, and weekdays Groton)

thelark May 17, 2006 2:34 pm

Great! I've updated the OP to have the date/time/location info as well as those who are attending. I'll keep it updated.

Can a mod please append the thread title to include "June 14th in New Haven"?

izzik May 17, 2006 2:41 pm

as usual, I'll miss this by a couple days.

PresRDC May 24, 2006 1:16 am

Awesome. I'm in (subject to possibly having to go back to Shanghai for the fourth time this Spring).

Also, if anyone comes across other CT FTers, pass along the message. There a lot of us.

the_traveler May 28, 2006 11:20 am

Count me in as a maybe. More east would have been a certain yes.

They're all first-come, first-served. I always thought standing in line was half the fun. Weird? Maybe. But I was always with a pack of friends and already had a good buzz on.

I wish I could attend. I just moved from New Haven.

hfallen Jun 10, 2006 4:44 pm

The "famous" pizza places in New Haven are all a little overrated. The best pizza place, I think, is BAR on Chapel Street, where you can get fantastic microbrewed beer along with the usual brick-oven pizza.

By far the most unique and wonderful eating establishment in New Haven is Louie's Lunch. I'm not sure if it's open Wednesday nights, but if it is, you all should stop in for one of the best hamburgers on planet Earth after having a few too many martinis at Hot Tomato. (The enormous space at Hot Tomato is great, but I'm not sure about the food. I personally like Roomba--the slightly overpriced but still unmatched Cuban restaurant next to the Union League Cafe.)

I'm most often a lurker here, but since I live a short walk from Hot Tomato's, you can count me in. The annual Arts and Ideas festival is currently going on, but that shouldn't have much of an effect on parking, etc.

Kcvt is right on both accounts, the pizza is better than those obnoxious places on Wooster St and l as luck would have it I am out of town so no matter where you choose to go your hubcaps are safe.

Efrem Jun 10, 2006 11:46 pm

Count me in! Just got back from Asia/Australia, wanted to see how the readjustment went and make sure no conflicts had cropped up while I was away. Everything's fine on both counts.

Could someone please post the address of Hot Tomato's for out-of-towners?

Have you been to Soul de Cuba on Crown? Better food. Fewer gimmicks. Cheaper.

Sorry to stand you guys up, but I ended-up having to stay in Shanghai longer than expected (5 weeks total). I am in NRT now on my way home (for now).

Hope it was a fun event!

Efrem Jun 14, 2006 11:55 pm

Indeed it was, at least for me, even though only four people made it: KenCT, dxtraveler and Mrs. d. Definitely worth the drive! ^ ^ ^

The Mrs and I had a great time. It was a pleasure to meet KenCT and Ephrem. Have a safe trip home and maybe we'll see you at another one.
