MUC 26-29 Dec.

Anyone wanna meet up for a Boxing Day (or beyond) bite to eat? Would love to catch up with any and all new-to-me and oldtimer FTers.

I'm also up for day trips to meet up with others. I'm likely to spend a day in Nürnberg during this trip.

NCRBILL Nov 26, 2005 11:35 am

Count us in!!

We would love to get together while we are there. I'm not sure what Boxing Day is all about so give us some ideas and we will have to do the planing.

Sounds like a lot of fun in Munich during the holidays.

:) Boxing Day is a big deal in England, but not so much in Germany. I was being flip. :) :) But I was serious about MUC at Xmas. It's really lovely.

I'm actually in MUC from the 21st through the 30th staying at the Renaissance in Schwabing, and will fire up my tri-band phone when I get there. I'll post the # then.

NCRBILL, I'll PM you shortly with the other details you asked about.

I would love to meet you at MUC or NUE. Let's see what is possible about a week before - year's end is always a bit hectic...

I'll be at MUC on dec 26th, 27th or 28th. drinks or dinner would be great

And what am I supposed to tell the 'rents? That I'm bailing out after Christmas to go running around Germany with beautiful, smart, travel-savvy women? Hmm.. they might put me on the plane themselves.... :D

essxjay Nov 27, 2005 12:44 pm

ralf, always a pleasure to hear from you. Yes, I think a week or so before to nail things down is an excellent idea.

chrissxb, I look forward to meeting you.

I've had two PMs from others who'll be around MUC this Xmas. Looks like we've got some great opportunties for meet-ups.

You should be so lucky. ;)

NCRBILL Nov 27, 2005 3:42 pm

Boy it sounds like we should have a great amount of people to have dinner with one night. Now I'll have to say you will have to pick the spot because I have no idea where to go.

Just let me know and we will meet up with you.

essxjay Nov 27, 2005 6:50 pm

Now that my trip is shaping up, let me throw out some ideas and counter with your own:

26th - dinner at The Augustiner, Nuehauserstr. 27 or Nuernberger Bratwurst Gloeckl am Dom. Mabye one of the locals can suggest which is better for a large crowd, if it's relevant.

27th - possible mid-day meal? i'm going on a short road-trip that afternoon, but y'alls should meet up anyway!

28th - possible dinner pending an e-mail from xxxxxxxx.

29th - mid-day meal? or dinner, as long as you don't mind me ducking out about 19:30 or so to catch my flight to TXL.

Thots?

I'll be in Austria until January so I am definitely interested! I am only two hours away by train from MUC or an hour and a bit from Salzburg so I'm flexible with anything. Or you can come visit me in Braunau am Inn. :D

We will be in Innsbruck from 21 Dec to 23 Dec staying at the Hilton. If you are in the area or would like to get together, let me know. You can PM me for the information if you would like.

Boy this is really getting to be a great vacation and also a great time meeting up with a lot of FTers. :D :D

jpdx Dec 2, 2005 1:50 pm

I'll be in MUC to visit my family from Dec 16 thru 29. I'd love to meet up with some FTers. I could imagine taking some of you out for a daytrip to, say, castle Neuschwanstein, or so. Not that many tourists this time of year, but very pretty if it's snowy (and we all hope for that, right?)

I second the Nuernberger Bratwurst Gloeckl for the first meeting, very central location, good sausages, perhaps a bit pricey.

For one of the afternoons on 12/27-29, I would suggest Kloster Andechs, an old monastery with an amazing beer hall, about 25mi soutwest of the city. Well worth the trip, but I'll have to check if they're open through the holidays.

meet there the 29th in the afternoon? I love this location !!!

Counsellor Dec 2, 2005 2:28 pm

What an opportunity!!

Well, while I certainly cannot gainsay the Augustiner for food and Gemuetlichkeit, this will be an opportunity to introduce you to:

1. A Munich beer that's actually *better* than Augustiner (hard to believe, I know); and

2. A better Nuernbergerwuerstchen place than the Glock'l (better taste, better ambiance, and better prices, plus Holzfass lager on tap!!).

(Sorry, no umlauts on the keyboard here.)

NCRBILL Dec 2, 2005 10:33 pm

I would love to go to the castle with you if you don't mind the family coming along. This is one place we wanted to visit so I would think this would be great.

If you would like, PM me and we can further discuss a date to do this trip.

Thanks again and I look forward to meeting you.

To get a ü (assuming you're using a standard Latin character set) hold down the Alt key and type "0252"
ß = Alt+0223
ä = Alt+0228
ë = Alt+0235
ï = Alt+0239
ö = Alt+0246
€ = Alt+0128
£ = Alt+0163

There will be a quiz.

Anyway, the afternoon of the 29th sounds great! My flight to TXL doesn't leave until ~21.20.

Well it sounds like we are all going to get together on the 29th then. Maybe we can place all the names in the first post to see who we have on the list. It sounds like a great party.

Talk with you soon.

Great. Kloster Andechs on 12/29. It's possible to get there by light rail (S-Bahn) plus a 30+ minute walk up a steep hill, but perhaps we can organise a carpool from Munich. I'll have to borrow my mom's car (sounds very underage, I know), but I can transport a few of you. Who else has a car?

Andechs is not a bad place for kids, NCRBILL, even though drinking and eating strange foods are the main activities; at age 10 or so, I used to buy beer for my dad when he could no longer walk due to inebriation.

NCRBILL Dec 3, 2005 10:16 pm

I think I can rent a car that day to drive the family. I would just need to follow you to the place. That would get us there (since there will be 5 in my car) and the others could ride with you.

Let me know and do we know what time we want to go? It all sounds good to me.

Talk with you all later.

Bill

I was just alerted to this thread today in FRA... guess I've been way too sloppy monitoring CommunityBuzz....

Anyways, due to non-availability of seats and/or good fares to South Africa, I will be home without any trips from now until 05 JAN. So I will be glad to spend some quality time with all the nice FTers coming to Munich (again). Count me in for most activities.

With regards to the Andechs trip, I can take up to 4 people with me in my BMW - so we can save ourselves the non-reliable S-Bahn ride out there ;)

essxjay Dec 11, 2005 5:55 pm

Ralf, nice to hear from you! T'would be a pleasure to see you again.

essxjay Dec 11, 2005 5:57 pm

Since things seem to be solidifying nicely, here's what's more or less on tap:

Montag, 26 Dec.
Dinner at Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl am Dom, upstairs, <time?>, Marienplatz 9.

Dienstag, 27 Dec.
???

Mittwoch, 28 Dec.
???

Donnerstag, 29 Dec.
Road trip to Kloster Andechs, <meeting time?>, <meeting place?>

If you're talking around noon (or early afternoon) on the 26th, I'll be happy to join for Nürnbergerwürstchen. (And I haven't forgotten that they serve Augustiner there.)

It doesn't look too good at the moment for me now. I'm on a trip to CGN/DUS on the 28th and 29th... But I will see what I can do...

The best time to go to Andechs is the early afternoon (say, 2-3pm). They stop serving beer at 8.30pm.

There are two strategies for meeting up: the efficient German way, and the Bavarian way.

The efficient German way would be having passengers wait at a central location (e.g., Hauptbahnhof), with drivers coming by at 1.30 for pick up.

The Bavarian way, of course, would be to meet at 10.30 or so, for Weisswurst and some beer in a place like the Augustiner. The advantage of this approach is that more beer and food can be consumed (or rather: it can be consumed earlier in the day), but the downside is that we may never make it to Andechs.

chrissxb Dec 12, 2005 11:10 pm

and why not meet for example at 11h30 at nordfriedhof u-bahn and then drive to andechs? some people have plans for the evening / late afternoon and are only available for extended lunch

essxjay Dec 18, 2005 1:48 pm

Bumping up to make some executive decisions :D

Latest plans

Montag, 26 Dec.
Dinner at Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl am Dom, upstairs, 7 p.m.

Dienstag, 27 Dec.
???

Mittwoch, 28 Dec.
Dinner, Augustiner (Nuehauserstr. 27, off Marienplatz), 7 p.m.

Donnerstag, 29 Dec.
Road trip to Kloster Andechs. Caravan from Munich City Hilton leaves at 11:30, arriving at Nordfriedhof B-bahn at ??? to pick up additonal revellers for the drive to Anedechs. Is this workable, reasonable? Please advise.

As soon as I get in to MUC on the 21st, I'll post my cell #. I'll also be reachable by PM and email via FT.

jajajaja.. take those ???s away from my name, I am in town and you know where I live, will be hard to avoid you guys in a town as tiny as this :)

I am in Austria to see my horse on the 27th, Andechs sounds good and I can get my Moms car (Scenic, so 5 adults fit just fine). Not sure about the rest yet, as I am supposed to do research for my senior project sometime too.

Btw, its white with fluffy snow outside, and supposed to stay about the same for the next week :)

Tell me about it. I was near Passau yesterday on business, and drove home on the "scenic" route (B12 via Altötting)...

Snow was really heavy, up to 4 inches on the road. Felt exhausted once I got home at around 11pm...

Yup. My BMW 3-series Kombi has sufficient space. But if we have too many cars, I don't mind to leave it at my office or the hotel and have some beer ;)

This or the 28th sounds great to us. We can still get a car if we need to since there are 5 of us. Let me know and I'll get it reserved.

This is really sounding great and with the snow, even that much better.

What is the weather report for Wednesday driving from MUC to Innsbruck?

NCRBILL Dec 18, 2005 4:28 pm

We were thinking of a side trip to Prague for a overnight stay. How would you get there? Would you go by Train or rent a car and how long would it take to get there by each?

Please advise.
