"Fred" Mini-do, Chicago, Aug. 27

Our long lost native son, fredmartens, will be in town to observe the competition between the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins at the former Weeghman Park, at the corner of Clark and Addison Streets on Saturday, August 27. He has assented to allow me to advise the FT world that he will be available after the confrontation, for potent potables and victuals. The contest will commence at 3:05 p.m. Feel at liberty to post your suggestions for the post-contest activities (approximately 6:00 p.m.) here.

ElmhurstNick Jul 27, 2005 1:57 pm

Does Fred actually intend on going to the game this time, or just letting others make a mess in his room?? ;)

I believe that I have a going-away party to attend in Evanston that evening for a friend of mine that is moving to ICT. If this is true, I will be able to make only a token appearance, although it'll be Fred's kind of crowd (except for the lack of eligible ladies) so maybe he'll want to crash it with me.

Oh, you mean manly men? :D

cawhite Jul 27, 2005 2:08 pm

Go figure, I can't make it because I'll be SINning again that weekend :o

fredmartens Jul 27, 2005 2:51 pm

Why, ILP, muchas gracias for that kind intro. Sorry to hear CAW will be SINning again :) Nick, I don't do Evanston, sorry...that's where Blort lives :D

For those of you that have met the "non-FT" sis in NYC, the other "non-FT" sis, bro-in-law and niece will be accompanying moi to the Cubbies game...after dinner, the girls are beating feet back to Warrenville in order to avoid (what is now known family-wide via New York-Chicago gossip channels) any post-dinner FT "out of control partying" that may or may not take place. Since well-to-do bro-in-law recently purchased a loft in River North, I'll be crashing in the city gratis...I love those non-hotel expense trips. :D

I'll be in ORD from the 26th to the 28th visiting friends, so no promises, but I'll keep an eye out on this thread.

Well, if anybody's going to keep an eye out, we'll have to keep it where we can easily find it, hence this gratuitous bump!

tfjim Aug 5, 2005 9:33 am

I will be returning from Bogota on Friday and will possibly stick around Chitown that weekend. If so it would be interesting to participate. Though Cubs vs. Marlins  that's a marquee event??

ElmhurstNick Aug 5, 2005 11:51 am

I may actually be free this evening after all, as my commitment for the 27th might actually end up being for the 26th instead.

Certainly not to most Cub fans; however, for an ex-patriate who's brother-in-law got the poorest draw I've ever seen in a 4 person season ticket divvy, it's the old "beggars can't be choosers" type o' deal. :D

Yawn. I just don't get the support for the northsiders, even more so when the southsiders are having such an incredible year. Though I do hear they are finally drawing some crowds, and not just because they're giving out bobbleheads every night. I would much prefer a ticket to the White Sox-Yankees series the weekend before so I could scream and boo and yell at the Bronx bombers.

You are living in St. Louis, of all places, and question team loyalties? Speaking for myself, I grew up a Cub fan. Now, because the Sox are having a good year I'm to jump on that bandwagon? I don't think so. It's in my blood! :D

Anyway, this is an excuse to party with Flyertalkers!

Yeah, the Sox are finally drawing more than 10K a night. Whoopee. They'll win 100+ games and choke in their first playoff round. Anybody that was an "old" Sox fan bailed when they tore down the old Comiskey, bulldozed McCuddy's and put up that sh!thole of a stadium they used to call the "new" Comiskey Park. What a bevy of entertainment choices there are around that dump, too. U.S Cellular Field...jesus, even the sponsor's product sucks. And going to a Sox game to boo the opposing team? Now that's a baseball fan...enjoy your corn dog  Do let us know how it was... :D

LOL, supporting the local team because they are consistently good and deserve the praise is one thing, supporting the local team as a pathetic bunch of losers that they are is quite another issue altogether! :p

I cannot help it, I was born in Brooklyn and spent my youth supporting the Mets and Jets, true torture. Yankee distaste is a fine sport where I grew up. I was rescued just in time to become a Cardinals fan in St. Louis where baseball has been more about the game itself than about its surroundings and the entertainment "choices" inside and outside the ballpark. But old habits die hard and given the record of the local teams I suppose "true" Chicago fans need other things to keep them interested in the game! :D

Wireless Aug 22, 2005 12:23 am

If I arrive at 10:19 pm into ORD, is it worth me trucking into town to try to meet everyone for afterdinner drinks? The next leg of my MR is the next morning at 8am.

(I'm doing an SFO-CVG x2 run next weekend via ORD) :D

Someday I'll actually leave ORD and see Chicago...

ElmhurstNick Aug 22, 2005 1:21 pm

Sure, venture inside our fiefdom... you know you really want to!

It'll take about 55 minutes at that time of night to get downtown from O'Hare. Were you planning on getting a hotel someplace or just staying up all night??

blort Aug 22, 2005 2:26 pm

Turns out that blort's uncle is getting remarried this weekend. The festivities are somewhere a couple hours south of the city but apparently it won't be a very drawn-out affair, so I might just be able to stop by on the way home.

Wireless, if you want to stay up all night, the last bars close at 5am. You can always meander around Wicker Park for a little bit afterward (my favorite taco place there doesn't close until 6 or 7am on the weekends) and catch the Blue Line back to O'Hare. I've hopped on from the Damen stop (see transitchicago.com) a little after 6am and made 7am flights before, but that might be cutting it a little close.

ILuvParis Aug 22, 2005 2:31 pm

It turns out I have another engagement as well, but mine is later - so, I'll be available right after the game for awhile. So, it looks like we've got Fred covered from 6 pm until 5 am!

fredmartens Aug 22, 2005 2:39 pm

Turns out I'm having dinner with the sis and bro-in-law after the game, who have opted to return to Whorrenville Sat. night instead of staying downtown at their condo. Seems they've heard enough of what goes on (from the NYC "spy" sister) at these "sordid" (shall we say) events and are scampering their whimpering little selves back to the "safety" of the "burbs". :D So, I'm free (or at greatly reduced prices) about 9PM Saturday or so to join up with the fiefdom. PL'd a dump...er...closet...er...room at the Palmer House for Sat. night.

So, maybe I'll be joining you later, as opposed to earlier. Hope you don't end up in the room with the mysterious fire of last week! :)

fredmartens Aug 22, 2005 2:56 pm

What about some lunch up in Wrigleyville...Goose Island or that little joint with the patio out back just south of it?

That could work. Or.....(just to make Missy jealous - not that the food is any good ;) ) Heaven on Seven (on Clark) just about a block south of the ball yard.

ElmhurstNick Aug 22, 2005 3:27 pm

How much did the PL room cost?

So are the festivities now starting at 9? Or do people want to get together around 7 anyway for dinner? We could have dinner where Fred's having dinner and recreate the scene from Chez Paul in The Blues Brothers.

fredmartens Aug 22, 2005 4:33 pm

Nick, I bid $90 for a 4*, but they countered and got me for $102  I was going to do the old Univ. of Chicago "student" ('bout time law school paid for SOMETHING) rates thingy at the Homeywood, but they wanted around $150.

ILP, lemme call the B&B (what I fondly refer to their 11,000 sq. ft. house as) and run Heaven on Seven by 'em for lunch. I'm all for it, and Missy's on vacation...she'll never know :)

I'll definitely let y'all know about the dinner place...that would be hysterical, since my 13 y.o. smartass (wonder where she got it) niece will be with us..."how much for zee little girl?" "C'mon, we're putting the fiefdom back together"... :D :D :D

ElmhurstNick Aug 22, 2005 4:48 pm

For $102, I'll sleep on the floor of my office if I'm too drunk to drive home.

It'd have been much cheaper if you'd just done a U of C student...

I think to have a home in Warrenville (or the unincorporated part east of it towards IL 59), 6000 sf is a minimum requirement. Two of my friends have a compound out there - seven bedrooms, five baths, and a basement bigger than my townhouse.

On Saturday night I scamper from the boring burbs into the city. I think I should be able to meet up around 9.

What EVER!

ILuvParis Aug 22, 2005 9:31 pm

OK, folks, I just informed Fred that FOX has decided to broadcast this game and changed the time to 12:20 p.m. So, we'll let Fred let us know what, if any, change of plans will result.

fredmartens Aug 23, 2005 12:03 am

Well, I guess that zaps lunch with a noon game now. Will probably be with the sis and fambly in the afternoon and cut loose around dinnertime after checking in at the hotel :D Y'all set the plan, I'll catch up wherever you're at!

Wireless Aug 23, 2005 2:37 am

I don't have hotel plans yet, and probably won't since I'm banking on standby availability. I'll see what comes together and see if I can pop in for a visit.

ILuvParis Aug 23, 2005 7:42 am

Well, I firmed up early evening plans when Fred had dinner plans - now with the game changed, I'll try to catch up later in the evening. Life is complicated!

ScottC Aug 23, 2005 7:57 am

A team of representatives from Tireflock will also make an appearance.

Grasshopper Aug 23, 2005 3:12 pm

let me know what you peeps plan. I have to work at 9 pm but would be up for an afternoon nosh.

ElmhurstNick Aug 23, 2005 8:19 pm

My plans are getting more concrete. I'm going to be in Evanston from 2-4pm, then I'm going to drive downtown. I will probably park out by my office someplace where the Saturday meter ends at 6pm. I should be free to join people by 6pm.

ScottC Aug 26, 2005 2:23 pm

How about Heaven on 7 anywhere between 6:30pm and 7?

(The Ho7 on Rush, so ample parking)

ElmhurstNick Aug 26, 2005 2:36 pm

That should work for me. I probably won't be online again before then, but Anna has my cellphone number if things change.

fredmartens Aug 26, 2005 3:37 pm

Sitting at the SEA AC, looks like I'm outta here on time today barring any ATC / gate surprises at ORD. I'll see y'all at Hon7 on Rush St. 6:30-7PM Saturday.
