Why do you suppose that FlyerTalk parties are so special?

We have been to tons of FlyerTalk events in a dozen countries and have tremendously enjoyed each and every one.

Of course, we love to travel and always enjoy discovering a new city, but, beyond that, what is the special magic of these events? Do you think that the same adventuresome spirit that inspires FlyerTalkers to travel halfway around the world to party with strangers, is what makes them so much fun?

And here I thought it was the alcohol and chocolate... :)

A common interest and understanding creates strong bonds.

Absolutely! ^

I'll drink to that. :D

I thought it was the rampant promiscuity. And the liquor.

But I was in LAS this weekend where there is lots of both of the above all around, and it wasn't as fun as a Flyertalk party. So now I'm searching for a new reason. :)

I think that any time you bring folks together with a common interest and throw them into a strange but nice environment and add good food, alcohol, and/or music, you are going to have good times.

I honestly can't say its unique to the FT community... in addition to my participation here, I've gone to several art-world get togethers as well as gatherings from other internet communities and the bonds are the same.

Common interests breed all sorts of interesting relationships! ;)

Obviously, you've been to different FT parties than I have!!! :D

....and the liquor.
....but some of us don't drink much alcohol, or even any!

IMHO, there's generally an openness and acceptance of other FlyerTalkers (even though it may be the first time we've met in person) that makes these gatherings special! ^

Innumerable small acts of generosity and goodwill, binding us together and giving us little boosts of hope and faith in each other. Changing the world, perhaps?

And I don't even make it to the good ones like SEA-DO and the London parties.

I think the diversity of people is one of the things that makes the gatherings so interesting - FT Community does cut across a wide swath of the social, ethnic, and political spectrum, and you meet a variety of people that you wouldn't necessarily have the ability to cultivate on your own.

Nice words, Dorlee-- It also doesn't hurt to have Marco Musco ;)
