CHICAGO (area) - Watering Hole Do

As with any town/city (except those new sterile strip mall suburbs) there are some unique watering holes that have been around forever.

I would like to propose a monthly FT trip to discover some of these dives….. err, I mean fine establishments.

The first FT Watering Hole Do will be at:

Meiers Tavern
235 E Lake Ave
Glenview, IL
(847) 724-0477

Date: Tuesday November 9, 2004
Time: TBD (evening)

Sweet Willie Oct 26, 2004 12:48 pm

History and photo of Meiers Tavern in Glenview is here (scroll down to 2nd page): http://www.glenview.il.us/pub/newsle...akeavesped.pdf

Wow, I haven't been to Meier's in years even though I drive by it every few weeks. I'm downtown in the Loop until 9pm on Tuesday nights though, so if I was able to make it out there it wouldn't be until around 9:45pm.

Great place though. Wonder if things have changed since the last time I was there -- used to be cash only, no credit cards.

Some things "never" change.....Cash only,,,,,but I'm told that "soon" the parking lot will be paved, so you won't have to navigate those lake-sized puddles that have always been part of the "charm" !! :)

Best wishes, Dave

Years? Mommy and Daddy took you? ;)

well, ****, I'm not sure. I mean, it's a nice *****g place and all, but the dumb**** of a manager kind of ruins the ambiance. :D

I'll be there...

(last time Willie, Dave, and I were there, Willie and I got in trouble with the manager because he didn't like our language....)

****ing right he didn't, what was his ****ing problem anyway?

I guess if we have to drink until 10 to see that mother****er Blort show up it wouldn't be the worst thing. Hope he brings his fake ID to get in.

If ALL the suburbanites in attendance would agree to raise a glass to President Elect Kerry, I might consider it!

Actually, I'll be willing to drive any city FTers that want to attend. The Pilot will hold four guests comfortably, six if you are very friendly - but not too friendly, please. :)

Just Missed you all

I will be in the NW burbs just a few days later, for my Dad's b-day and some other happenings. Sorry to miss you all by just a couple of days.

yeah it is too bad. Last time I saw you we were having margaritas with the mayor of Des Plaines! :)

I'll think I should be in for this one. And hopefully I'll have had enough time to detox from BooDo by then... :o Anyone up for Hackney's beforehand?

Drove by Meier's tonight and can verify that the parking lot has indeed been paved!

Actually, Meier's burgers are almost as good as Hackney's. But they don't have the onion loaf. :(

It's just not right without the onion loaf... :p

Don't let your onion loaf...

True enough - and yes, I'd be up for Hackney's in advance.

If you don't want to drive all the way into the city that day, I can drop you off at Rosemont Park and Ride or Edison Park Metra.

ElmhurstNick Nov 1, 2004 7:57 pm

So who's exactly coming? Looks like just the suburbanites:

Sweet Willie
bseller
ElmhurstNick
cawhite60156
blort (if we can get him to skip class)
iluv2fly (tentative)

Except for Marty, the city dwellers seem to be afraid of going north of Touhy. :p

Say Hackney's on Harms at about 6:30 depending on traffic, and Meiers' at 8ish??

blort Nov 1, 2004 8:07 pm

blort will drive to class that evening and haul arse to get to Meier's as soon as possible afterward. Hopefully I can be there around 9:30pm.

Of course, if someone would like to volunteer to take notes in Risk Management for me that evening, I might consider joining the group at its regularly scheduled time :p

Also, I'd be happy to give any city dwellers a lift back to the Metra station if they would like to catch a ride up north with somebody after work. Trains run every hour back into the city that time of night and it's about a 25 minute ride from Evanston to Madison/Canal.

Thanks & appreciate the offer, but I'll most likely set up some meetings in the NW 'burbs that afternoon since I'll have to run home and either let the dog out or take him to doggy camp 12 hours early

And I can play very nicely, thank you very much. :)

So now who's going to drop out at the last minute for this event?? The city dwellers are still afraid of the suburbs.

The participants thread has been updated to include iluv2fly's potential participation.

I think the plan is for me to be leaving Madison/Wacker at 5:30pm, so Marty can ride shotgun. Or sidesaddle, his choice. There is still room for three more in the back.

It's going to take more twisting than that...

No twisting involving my car... at least not while I'm driving.

First off, I didn't bring the gift that I picked up for you in SJC to lunch today because I figured it would be easier to hand it over on Tuesday. Of course, the gift was free, but at least it's a start...

What else can we offer?? :)

purplecat Nov 4, 2004 8:46 pm

You can put purplecat down for a definite "maybe". Need to check the work calendar first and Mrs. purplecat secondly, but there's a plausible chance I can be there.

And the people at Hackney's drive me ****ing nuts. I sang in a chorus that would do a couple of post-show parties there annually and we'd fill their basement and main floor with people at 10:30 / 11:00 on a Saturday night. We're hungry and thirsty and they're making us pay cash for drinks and closing the kitchen at midnight and turning the lights up at 12:30 or so. I'm not a big fan of Hackney's for their 'tude.

Scott

Marty has to be in Los Angeles on Tuesday so he is going to have to bow out. He truly regrets not being able to join such an august gathering of individuals. He hopes that he will be able to see you in the very near future at another bacchanal.

korea71 Nov 6, 2004 5:21 pm

Is there a time figured out for this yet? I drive by Meier's on the way home every night so I guess it couldn't hurt too much to stop by. :)

Oh my God, he's ALIVE!!! :)

cawhite Nov 6, 2004 7:08 pm

Are we set on 6:30 at HonH, or could we make it 7:00?

ElmhurstNick Nov 6, 2004 7:45 pm

Since I'm not driving Marty and therefore don't have to drive him back to the city at the end of the night, 7 is ok with me - I was the one that suggested 6:30.
