2023 SIN DO discussion

I'm planning for the next DO. Are they always the 3rd weekend in January?

CDKing May 31, 2022 7:58 pm

Yep, it coincides with MLK holiday weekend. I won't be able to attend because I'm taking the +1 to MLE around the same time.

The announcement will be soon , rxgeek .. by lowjhg or bschaff1

I will be in Singapore and could attend. Thanks!

colpuck Aug 19, 2022 2:33 pm

Wife and I will be there over that weekend in 23.

StuckInYYZ Aug 19, 2022 3:40 pm

Wouldn't that also conflict with LNY in 2023? Like reunion dinner?

Zorak Aug 19, 2022 3:45 pm

I also have at least placeholder flights/hotel booked for 2023

Google tells me LNY is the 22nd, whereas SIN DO is traditionally MLK weekend, 13-16.

Third weekend is 21/22 this year (assuming you guys stay with the 3rd weekend of January). Reunion dinner is evening of the 21st... first day is 22nd.

As I said (bolded) it's traditionally the weekend that, depending how you want to refer to it, either precedes or includes MLK day in the US (3rd Monday in January). For example 2017, 2012, and 2006 have the same January calendar as 2023 and, it was held the 13th-15th:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/comm...ge-run-do.html

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/comm...un-2006-a.html

Also 2007 when Jan 1 was a Monday:

So then it's the 2nd weekend (vs. what CDKing provided).

I'm getting rumblings of some new projects coming down the pipeline so I'm unlikely to attend, but wanted to point this out.

This year it is, yes.

Well to be fair he did also say MLK weekend, but probably wasn't looking at a Jan 2023 calendar when he posted it.

Either way, rather than getting wrapped up in which numbered weekend it is and whether you want to count any part of a weekend vs. full weekend that includes Friday, it's easier to look to see when MLK Day is, and then SIN DO is the Fri-Sun immediately before that Monday.

SEA777GUY Aug 19, 2022 11:07 pm

I have flights booked as well for MLK weekend in SIN.

HPN-HRL Aug 20, 2022 5:01 am

I booked flights and hotel (Andaz) a few months ago, coming in on Friday the 13th; hoping to spend a few days in KUL after the Do.

Activities are being planned behind the scenes .
lowjhg is holding off the SIN DO ‘ 23 thread till September or October - asking us to keep cool ;)
Seems still pending some “ embargoed “ exciting news for attendees

PES_B1 Aug 21, 2022 3:59 am

Staying in SIN anyway, will be there if no mock exam \pm 1 week

rxgeek Aug 22, 2022 9:20 am

I also booked flights months ago. Arriving on the 11th and departing Sunday for BKK as usual. Waiting to see where most of you are staying.

kirkwoodj Aug 22, 2022 10:37 am

Majuki Aug 23, 2022 3:33 pm

Not committed yet, but following for updates...

rxgeek Aug 23, 2022 4:21 pm

I'm also booked at the Conrad. I'm willing to share my room and Diamond benefits. PM me.

HPN-HRL Aug 23, 2022 4:57 pm

I'm at the Andaz, with a premium suite booked for the 13th-16th (Fri/Sat/Sun nights). Happy to open it up to all before or after other events. I will also be at the Andaz for at least Monday night, and possibly Tuesday night as well.

ChrisFlyer66 Aug 23, 2022 8:08 pm

I haven't booked any flights yet, but I'm very interested in returning to SIN. I made it to 8 SIN DOs in a row until we were interrupted by the pandemic. I hope there is a pre or post DO as well, as it is a long way to travel for three days in Singapore. I booked a Holiday Inn on Orchard Road during the recent IHG flash sale for the presumed DO dates, but I may change it.

I'm but a mere gold, so I may take you up on that.

We are going to be there Monday night as well, fly to HKT Mid-day Tuesday

Polytonic Aug 24, 2022 12:01 pm

What are the exact dates for this? I have nearly 400k Krisflyer miles expiring that I need to use or lose. This might actually be a good excuse!

AFAIK nothing is officially announced, but you can read the previous page for speculation/discussion of past DO dates.

SEA777GUY Aug 27, 2022 11:26 pm

Any thoughts of a post Do location?

We absolutely must have a toast or even a time of remembrance for those that will no longer be with us for SIN do. Michael, Pat and Mort (Spaceman)

Bundy Bear Aug 31, 2022 5:01 pm

Haven't booked anything but now watching with some interest.
No more Emirates flights between Brisbane and Singapore so will need to see what options there are.

ClaudiSTR Sep 12, 2022 12:39 pm

Happy to join the SIN DO again :)

Missed it a lot.
When I saw this thread, I was tempted to book straight away a flight (on QR) and a hotel (the Conrad so far, but that might change).

Looking forward seeing familiar FTer again and meet new ones :)

The usual organizers haven't chimed in, and no guarantee they ever will. But enough people have already booked, so I think it is safe to say there will be a DO of some sort on MLK weekend (Jan 13-16)

Herb687 Oct 20, 2022 1:04 pm

Potential first time attendee at this DO and also first time visitor to SIN period. Looking for advice on where to stay. I see a lot of people here at the Conrad. Conrad rates look pretty high. I think I've narrowed down my choices to:
  • JW Marriott on points at redemption value of about .87 cents
  • St. Regis paying cash (much lower rate than the Conrad)
  • Shangri-La paying cash (no loyalty program)

The JW is really close to the Conrad. Do most of the official or unofficial DO events usually take place in that area? The other two properties are not close but wouldn't mind staying in a different part of town if it's relatively easy to get around.

Any other properties I should consider? Even independent ones that offer luxury at a good value?

You could go to the Raffles across from the JW Marriott, but good value is subjective. :)

The JW Marriott is a great property. I don't know your status with Marriott, but the breakfast buffet is single-handedly the top 5 hotel breakfasts I've seen. If you have Suite Night Awards, the property is usually good about honoring those. Between the Conrad and the JW Marriott, I'd give the nod to the JW Marriott easily.

If you're looking at something a bit more economical, the Sheraton is perfectly serviceable but a bit dated.

January?

cocobird Oct 21, 2022 1:33 am

I am the forgetful optimist, booking flights months ago when I found award space on Japan Air using Alaska miles. Will most likely staying at the Conrad.

Four Seasons isn't bad and usually not that expensive (for a FS property). I don't like the Conrad area as much so I'd avoid staying there. Royal Plaza on Scotts is well located and I always find it a real good deal for the area. When I Bonvoy in Singapore I prefer the Sheraton to any other of the places. It's convenient, 500 meter walk to a good hawker center, close to the subway and if you can get a bungalow/cabana room back by the pool or a poolside room I can't think of a better place to stay.

Singapore doesn't have really great luxury hotels like Bangkok so IMHO I don't think it's worth it to splurge to stay at one of the name brand "luxury" hotels. It's also super easy to get around via subway or grab so anywhere near the center will put you within close proximity of the Conrad.
