LAX Meetups and DOs Thread
I figure we've had a few separate one off Meetup threads so look to transition to a more standing thread for LAX Meetups and DOs.
As a first post, wanted to get feedback on planning a potential Meetup for November 2020. Date under consideration: Saturday, November 21, 2020. Possible options under consideration: Option A. Lunch and Beverages: Looking on Google Maps and found the following 2 breweries with open air seating and food trucks nearby SpaceX in Hawthorne: Common Space Brewery Los Angeles Ale Works Both are open on the 21st with the requisite food trucks. Option B. Gowf: There are a number of public courses nearby/adjacent to LAX: Westchester, Lakes at El Segundo, Chester Washington, etc. that tee times will open up for that Saturday. Feedback requested on the date suggested as well as interest in either Option A or B or both. David |
Having spent Saturday (11/14/20) testing out both Option A and Option B, I'm thinking that combining them during the fall months with less daylight and cooler temperatures (even in Southern California) isn't the best idea.
Also, unless there are a bunch of FT LAX area golfers who want to wake up early, the courses nearby seem to only be offering tee times in the afternoon - and, while, these are twilight rates after November 1, there's a significant chance of having to look for your tee shot on later holes in lessening daylight/twilight. As I found out at Chester Washington even with a 1 PM tee off time - since the holes are a bit shorter at the courses around LAX, you sometimes have to wait on the shorter par 4s to tee off which adds to the length of the round. So, if folks are interested, I'm thinking that Option A. Lunch and Beverages, would be simplest this Saturday. Both brewery spaces have sufficient amounts of outdoor tables and options to order food while imbibing. How does a 12 Noon start sound? David |
David, Thanks so much for the update and all the time and effort you have been investing for the LAX DO Community, it has not gone unnoticed.
Unfortunately, I won’t be in town this Saturday so I won’t be able to attend the lunch. However, I really appreciate what you’re doing here by trying to normalize some consistency. Hopefully, my travel schedule will permit the next opportunity. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. I hope you won’t be cracking out those little Buffalo Trace bottles, while Mrs. DELee is toiling away preparing the holiday meal! See you soon, Flying Machine |
For Saturday, November 21st, I've made a table reservation for 4 starting at 12 PM for Los Angeles Ale Works and then a reservation starting at 1 PM for Common Space Brewery.
Look forward to seeing folks there. PM me if you have any questions. David |
At LA Ale Works with feline accompaniment:

In-N-Out Run: Sunday, December 6, 2020
Zorak will be transiting LAX on Sunday, 6 December, 2020: Arriving 12:55 PM (Pacific) and back out at 5 PM.
Calling an In-N-Out run starting at 1 PM and lasting at least until 3 PM. We'll see if LA County allows outside dining again by then (unlikely) - possible add/switch to brewery if this happens. Please post to the wiki if you'll be there or might be able to join! David |

"People may lawfully leave their residences only to engage in defined essential activities. [...] Mirroring the county’s order, all public and private gatherings with people from more than one household are prohibited, except for outdoor faith-based services and protests." I'm guessing that claiming we're worshipping metal sky gods, or protesting spend-based frequent flyer programs, won't past muster :p |
Forgot that I took these back on 12/06/20:
Appropriate social distancing and dining at LAX In-N-Out led to chair failure: https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...44b994a4da.jpg Zorak has better shots of the planes landing on 24R @ LAX but here's a few of what I took: https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ba700ed1ab.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b55ebc700e.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...785d5015b4.jpg David |

I'll have a long layover at LAX on Sunday, Sep 26, arriving shortly before noon, if people are around and would like to meet up.

I'm still on track for this, although on further investigation it seems like the Rams are playing at 1pm so dunno if that dampens people's enthusiasm to head towards LAX around that time :p
Edit: Whoops - Wrong week. 09/26 does indeed show a 1:25 PM start. I guess we need some collective FT info if they know what Rams games at SoFi Stadium have on LAX traffic on Sundays. And seating space at neighborhood good eats/drinks places. David |
I’m a very strong maybe for the event (depends on when and where) as to the traffic: 105, Century Blvd , La Brea and Prairie are fairly busy on game days! How do I know, I have season tickets and I just sold my parking for the Tampa Bay game in the brown section for $175 on Ticketmaster. There is not enough on site parking for about 50% of the crowd, therefore lots of satellite parking in Inglewood Lots, Buses and Rideshares galore..
However, I don’t think LAX/Sepulveda are that affected. |

Is there ever a good time to drive on the 405?

I'm open to suggestions :) my departing flight isn't until ~22:00 so I have plenty of time (though once plans firm up I may try to move it earlier or SDC day-of)
Good to know! Richmond bar and Grill, is around the corner and serves really good hamburgers and homemade chips. Further down the street there’s Slice and Pint a pizza spot that’s outdoors and has good pizza. In fact all the locations that I’ve mentioned have some form of outdoor seating if required Rinaldis a local deli makes great sandwiches which we can take over to Imperial Hill for some plane spotting, there are a few tables we can eat at.. David mentioned you have been in conversation and considering a brewery in Torrance.. That makes it a little less appealing to me, but I could make it happen so far it looks like it’s the three of us. If any of the traffic reporters want to join us that would be great😀 |

The El Segundo area presents several opportunities. The Brewport has a unique self pour concept (You could pour your own beer and wine in increments of an ounce or less, or more if you choose) Fun way to taste many different beers.

Just talked with Mrs. DELee: she suggests the Far Field Beer Company (https://farfieldbeer.square.site/) in nearby Lawndale as our next stop.
Apparently something to do with RF engineering...but with good beer... ;) David |

As noted by Flying Machine , we went to three different brew places: Brewport in El Segundo, Far Field in Lawndale and King Harbor (the brewery) in Redondo Beach. He also did double duty in being Zorak 's around town transporter.
A few shots from Brewport on Main in Downtown El Segundo: https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...38d0204767.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3380ecee14.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...05e504ccec.jpg Far Field is interesting given its truly industrial location directly on Rosecrans just west of Hawthorne: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...616f2a87cc.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4d2c825caa.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0db1425fef.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d5eacabd1e.jpg This time I forgot to pull my phone out to take some shots as we enjoyed our beers as well as hot chicken and fries from the food truck. Also completely missed any shots from the King Harbor Brewery location on Kingsdale and 182nd. I blame it on too much beer. A very enjoyable afternoon with much discussion about travel, life and FlyerTalk! David |

Brewport had Hopsaint Chocolate Trip porter on nitro on one of its taps. I wasn't a huge fan but I think the others enjoyed it.

David I was *really* tempted to do a day trip, but since I'm planning to join a former AF colleague's first post-retirement HH at Grunion's on Fri 1 Oct (1700-2000ish) and then embark on a TCON MR, the domestic overhead was a bit too much ... that said, I'll definitely close the loop if future travel plans materialize |
I'm I'm LA for the weekend. Will have some free time Friday and Saturday afternoon if you are around.
