True! But I personally don't mind Bethesda cuz it takes me 15 min door to door when rush hour has died down. Also, Bethesda has good options for outdoor summer seating. On a Thursday, Rock Bottom has an all night $2 pint happy hour with purchase of a glass. (The glass is probably $28.95.) It's unfortunate to meet at 7 pm if the Happy Hour ends at that time. The free rag On Tap lists all the Happy Hours around DC by neighborhood. Also available online: http://www.ontaponline.com/bars/

Would Tyson's ever be considered? (I know El Boocho would like that http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif) I frequent a great place that is never too busy, great food and excellent wine and beer selection. I know the owner quite well. One reason is that people in the Dulles area have expressed interest but find it too far to go into DC. Re the Metro issue some of us could volunteer to pick up people. You are looking at a 15 min ride from Foggy Bottom.

I'm game for about anything. Bethesda is not my fave but I'm sure the MD'ers feel the same way about NOVA.

By the way there is also a Rock Bottom in Ballston that is much closer to the metro than the one in Bethesda. It's also quite a zoo on those cheap pint nights. I prefer to pay an extra buck or two and not have to worry about some 19-year-old intern puking on me. Then again there are advantages to having drunken 19-year-old interns around. Just ask BC.

Sometime we ought to do something at Potowmack Landing by DCA.
  • Sit outside..
  • Watch the planes land..
  • Overlooks the water and the monuments..

Seems like a good pick at some point.

We tried this back in November or December but ended up going to Pizzaria Uno. And it was a zoo!

It's the $1 pint nights that creates the zoo since it's only for 1.5 hours. The $2 pints plus glass purchase won't be as attractive to the masses. Oops, according to their website the $2 night is now on Wednesdays.

I do like the fact that they have a Frequent Drinking Program (FDP) called the Mug Club. Their elite status (120 pints) gives you a plaque on the wall.

Gleff's suggestion sounds really good.

I went to a wedding reception at Potowmack Landing in the fall and it is pretty nice there. The only thing is that it's not on the Metro line but I'd be willing to pick up people at either the Braddock or National Airport Metro stops.

Hmm... back from a SoCal hiatus. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

A few thoughts:
Re. locations off of the Metro, people who have iffy schedules and who may be in from out of town may not be able to coordinate rides as easily if they decide to come at the last minute. But how do the rest of you feel? Mind you, this is coming from a Metro-bound FTer.

Re. time, 7pm seems early enough that people can go directly from work, but late enough to avoid traffic and parking hassles. But.... there's nothing to stop people from getting an early start!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Re. rotation, maybe keep this one in Bethesda since it's already semi-established. Since May was in DC, if we do June in MD, then we can do July in VA to get back on schedule. Ozstamps and Joh will be here around Fri. July 25. Then we'll continue with Aug. in DC, Sept. in MD., and Oct. in VA.

Re. reservations, we were chastized soundly by the manager of TGI Fridays at DCA when we didn't fulfill the group size, so I've been more shy about reserving space. But, Rock Bottom in Ballston was more than a zoo back when we we tried it. Unos was actually the back-up.

Thoughts???

The suspense is killing me. Is it June 12th? I can make that one and will have a car to provide a ride from DCA. Is it Ballston or Bethesda? Either way, I vote for Rock Bottom to get a pale ale. I think the Ballston zoo night has moved to Wednesday.

VJ let us know. BTW, I plan to start early wherever everyone ends up. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

You know - at some point you guys should have one at the DoubleTree in Arlington - the one right there in Crystal City overlooking DCA and the Pentagon and with a REVOLVING restaurant happy hour. Ask kokonutz, he'll give you directions.

gnaget May 20, 2003 3:01 pm

Corrrect, neither Ballston nor Bethesda RBs have happy hours on Thursday nights. Ballston has $1 pints 11-21 on Wednesdays. The On Tap rag has incorrect information.

I suggest going back to the original plan of Austin since it has outdoor seating and the weather should be nice by June 12.

Would I be allowed into any of these places as an under-21 (I'm not looking to drink, just to meet fellow FTers)...

Most of these places are restaurants, rather than exclusively bars -- so there shouldn't be any problem.

Even most bars in DC don't start carding until later, or so my interns tell me.
