Munich Feb 1

Anyone interested in a get-together in MUC on Feb 1?

or Jan 25?

rcs85551 Oct 15, 2002 3:46 am

I'm in town... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Spiff Oct 15, 2002 7:32 am

I am leaning towards Feb 1 myself. AA can get me there from SDF for < $500 with biz upgrades confirmed. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

cranford Oct 15, 2002 4:40 pm

if i can juggle the books well enough, i would be interested in Feb 1

Spiff Oct 15, 2002 8:35 pm

Hey, 3 is a party!

I am officially down for MUC, arriving in the morning of Feb 1 and leaving in the morning on Feb 2. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

essxjay Oct 15, 2002 10:41 pm

Hey! Munich is one of my fave cities .... and if an FT get-together is going on. well ...

Spiff Oct 15, 2002 11:21 pm

WooHoo!

"Let's light this candle!"

rcs85551 Oct 16, 2002 12:11 am

Too bad I cannot commit sufficient time this winter to make this the first real MUC DO. I know many people I have met so far want me to, but the timing in February is simply unfortunate for me due to personal reasons. But I will sure try to make the best out of it for everybody who wants to join Spiff... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

By my calendar Feb 1 is a Saturday. I could probably make it. Meet at the Augustiner? Or the Hofbräuhaus?

essxjay Oct 20, 2002 4:35 pm

Counsellor, will we _finally_ meet? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

The Augustiner or the Hofbräuhaus ... decisions decisions.

BTW, our dearly departed nathan detroit highly recommends the Zum Klosterl on St. Anna Str. Ever hear of it? Apparently it's fabulous.

Spiff Oct 20, 2002 11:00 pm

Let's do both! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

And the Zum Klosterl on St. Anna Str. for good measure.

I expect I could make it down there for a day or two, avec or sans wife. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

When is that?

Daydream Oct 30, 2002 7:15 pm

I am in, will probably not go to the US before end of february again http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

rcs85551 Oct 31, 2002 12:33 am

Wow, that's how you learn that there is another FTer in your city! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

essxjay Nov 26, 2002 1:31 am

I'm seriously looking into this. I've got two US SWUs to burn by the end of February ...

Counsellor Dec 28, 2002 8:41 am

So, what's the status?

I hear I missed a great get-together over the 13th - 15th, but unfortunately I was out of country at both ends of the weekend and couldn't play.

Did make it to Munich 21 - 25 Dec, and am happy to report they were successful in replenishing the beer supply you all had damaged so badly. Am also blocking out 31 Jan (afternoon/evening) through 2 Feb (afternoon) for a return visit.

Who else will be in town that weekend?

Daydream Dec 28, 2002 2:18 pm

<raising hand again> me, I am in and out town nearly every other day, but I have to return to sleep and eat anyway http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Can as well make a little party out of it.

Btw, we had last week a nice sunday brunch, Orlando at the Platzl, was a nice selection of breakfast and lunch foods (including fresh prepared meat and fish) for not even 16 Euros per Person.

kokonutz Jan 2, 2003 2:42 pm

Well, I DO have a couple of USAir swus that expire 2/28 and with the status/bonus miles applying to UA I am sorely tempted...but right now fares DCA-MUC are running >$500 1/30-2/2...but for a chance to drink with Spiff in Munich...hmmmmmmmmmmmm...

[edited to add] SHUCKS! Those stupid, silly USAir upgrades are 1 day ahead for lowly silvers like me http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif It is suggested that I should go somewhere on an a330 to better my chances of avoiding coach (god forbid). Or I could UG at time of booking for a mere $2500 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

I also need to use my US SWUs and was thinking of MUC and maybe some skiing somewhere close like Garmisch. Trying to figure out if it's really any good........ I'll shoot for that weekend but might run into some work problems.

Kokonutz, we met at the DC social in Dec. I'll try not to steal your Envoy seat. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif It does look wide open on the Thursday.....

NickP 1K Jan 4, 2003 6:29 pm

DOH; the weekend before I move out of my place in Munich! Oh well

DLSTR Jan 6, 2003 10:29 am

I am on an internship in munich in february. So I probably will be in.

essxjay Jan 6, 2003 4:01 pm

Rats! I've got a mid-term that Friday. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Spiff Jan 7, 2003 7:33 am

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Can you take it early?

FLYMSY Jan 13, 2003 2:57 pm

Is this little get together still on "tap"? I'm in the middle of trying to switch airlines (from Delta to UA, probably) and want to book a trip to Munich to visit friends at the Bodensee.

Spiff Jan 13, 2003 9:59 pm

Definitely still on tap! Aptly put, I might add. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

rcs85551 Jan 13, 2003 11:52 pm

I give skiing lessons during the day, but meeting for drinks and/or dinner in the evening should work out fine for me. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

gnaget Jan 14, 2003 4:46 pm

My probability has increased because a work deadline has been pushed fwd.

Skiing is apropos because I wanted to check out Garmisch but the conditions don't look very good so far....

Where do you teach skiing?

rcs85551 Jan 14, 2003 5:43 pm

I give skiing lessons with a local sport club.

Regarding snow conditions, we got a couple of inches the past few days - one should find good conditions in the Alps...

On Garmisch's website it shows the lifts that are open but also major descents like Kandahar. They are all marked closed at this time. Is that correct info?

LH738 Jan 16, 2003 6:04 am

I'm still working on the schedule for that weekend. I'll try to join on 01/02-Feb-03.

Karen2 Jan 17, 2003 11:38 pm

You guys are killing me! Einar and I will be there the next weekend - Feb 7-10 on an Oakland - Munich mileage run! Anyone know the best and fastest way to get to Liechtenstein? Want to put my foot in that country!

gnaget Jan 18, 2003 6:19 am

Well, I am pretty sure that there is no train service in FL. Well, let's take a look......

You could take a train to Lindau from MUC but it gets messy after that -- it looks like you have to take a train to a nearby Swiss town and bus it into the valley.
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/d

Otherwise driving is a better option. It shouldn't take more than 3 hours, although it gets complicated around the Bodensee and you have to enter Austria for a while. I have a strong dislike for Austria, so I never set my foot in it for many years, but I have heard that they may technically require an international driver's license for a US license holder.

FLYMSY Jan 18, 2003 2:30 pm

I don't know about the international drivers license, but if you rent a car in Germany, you will have to buy a sticker (vignette) for your windshield to be able to drive on the Austrian autobahns (& Swiss, for that matter). If I remember correctly, it isn't very expensive.

FLYMSY Jan 21, 2003 1:24 pm

I'm in. I arrive on Saturday morning at MUC. First trip on my new airline of choice - United. Have any definite get-togethers been planned yet?

gnaget Jan 22, 2003 10:17 pm

I booked tickets. Arrive on Thurs and will be in Garmisch until Sat evening. What are the plans? I may not be able to log on next Thurs-Sat knowing German hotels out in the country.

rcs85551 Jan 23, 2003 12:16 am

I am currently trying to decide on a place where we can meet for dinner Saturday evening while trying to fulfill Spiff's request for Bavarian Cuisine... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Counsellor Jan 25, 2003 3:42 am

Haxenbauer?

We really do need to set up either a place of contact or a person of contact.

I'm coming in on Friday, staying at the Arabella Sheraton Westpark. I have a probable dinner meet that evening with an international law colleague at the Augustiner Grossgaststätte. If we're planning to do a haxen Saturday, though, I'll forego doing one Friday at the Augustiner.

Any plans for daytime? Alte/Neue/really Neue Pinakothek? Schloß Nymphenburg? If essxjay can make it, perhaps a tour of nathan detroit's favorite places?

And we mustn't forget a stop at the Hofbräuhaus for any who haven't seen it (or who just want to see it again), and the Bratwurstherz'l for those who like Nürnbergerwürstchen at reasonable prices (and Hacker from a Holzfaß).

Who's in charge of this get-together, anyway?
