Non-FT members are reading over our shoulders:

1. An airline station manager emailed me for elucidation about my FT observation on security at his airport.

2. A trade magazine reporter emailed me for details about my FT observation of a hotel promo.

3. A Wall Street Journal reporter emails me constantly for input for his travel articles.

Does anyone else receive these annoying inquiries from outside the FT membership ranks?

Not me but I haven't been here that long. I wouldn't find them annoying if I did though. I think it is rather complimentary that they value your opinion enough to contact you for input.

Yep. All the time.

Generally, reporters I don't talk to (misquoted too many times in the past). I've even been asked to be on network and local televison several times.

Travel industry personnel (airline management, government officials/agencies etc.), I do talk to.

I don't find them annoying at all. Rather I enjoy that the industry and its publications ARE paying attention to the hot issues.

For those who don't want to be contacted, either take your e-mail out of your profile or maybe try a variation on the old "no spam" trick.

Yep, get a lot of these. Sometimes I respond, other times I dont. I like to do quite some checking around before I talk to these people...

I have been contacted by the FBI, CIA, NSA and the local authorities.

Been contacted numerous times over the years. Generally you spenbd 30 mins on a phone call or email to end up with a sentence in the report. VAGUELY summarising what you actually said. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

However, it does show that FT gets the media attetion. Anyone who does NOT want to be contacted only needs to leave off their email contact from their profile ... simple as that.

I have been contacted on a number occasions for comments/input into a media piece.

I don't really mind as long as it doesn't take too long.

What I do get a lot of, is mail from lurkers asking questions about a topic that is currently posted or another general question. Its almost daily that I get mail on this basis. I don't mind this too much but don't understand why they don't join, its free and it is as anonymous as you want it to be.

For some strange reason http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I seem to get a lot of mail in my own office from other employees in my subsidiary with travel and AmEx questions.....

My experiences exactly.

Yeah, and my co-workers used to laugh at me. Now, everytime I take another free trip overses, they bow at my feet and chant "we are not worthy"! (not really, but it's a nice thought!)

I receive a fair amount of e-mail from the media and handle it on a case-by-case basis, but I almost always at least respond to legitimate organizations which I recognize by name. I think this relationship is a good thing as the media can be our very powerful ally when we have something important to say. It is, for instance, my understanding that a Flyer Talker working with the press was instrumental in getting UA to honor the legendary $27 SFO/CDG fares.

I know that the media attention which began with an article in the Wall Street Journal was very significant in helping me in my dealings with the TSA in Portland last spring.

I say, go for it.
