Very good, I have heard of the reputation of the Red Iguana but never had the chance to try it. I will now since i do trust food choices to the FlyerTalk community. Thanks for the tip and let's see how this shapes up over the next week or so for our mini-FT get together. While in town I'm paying respects at the Marriott Rewards service center there on Bear Cat Drive and also the WebMiles folks down in Sandy. Might try and visit the Priority Club Service Center as well. Food, Fun and FlyerTalk....yea!

A couple of good places outside downtonwn that should accept a reservation: Michelangelo's, which is becoming my favorite SLC restaurant. It's in an obscure location in Sugarhouse (in a strip mall near the Tap Room for you locals) but the food & service are always great. The new Paris Bistro on 15th & 15th (across the street from Fresco) is a nice find. They're still working out the kinks in service, but I did enjoy my meal there.
Randy, the Blue Iguana (sister to the Red) might be more accessible. It's right downtown near 200 South & West Temple. |
Salt Lake City is sitting under a brown pancake of smog, but Park City has crystal clear air, brilliant sunshine, and a remarkably comfortable 40 degrees. The nationwide torch relay came through Park City today.

Anyone going to be at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City on February 20th? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum74/HTML/003104.html |
chexfan's Tips for a Pleasant Winter Olympic Experience:
1) Stop at a Wal-Mart and get hand-warmers before you attend any outside events. If you're gonna be outside... Layers, Layers, Layers! 2) Security is varying from venue to venue. The "guidelines" that the SLOC handed out were pretty exact for Snowbasin, Olympic Park and the ECentre. 3) If you are ticket-less, begging works (and a bit of charm) if you want to get into the Medals Ceremony at night. 4) Traxx parking is a nightmare if you park within 3 or 4 stops from the city (coming from Sandy and the south) 5) Garbage cans seem to be sparcely located. 6) Bring your own beer 7) Good luck finding a fun place to hang out at night in SLC. Park City is a better bet. 8) Bring sunglasses 9) Look at your restaurant bill to see if the gratuity is already added. We noticed that 18% was being added to tables w/ parties of 2 and 3. We surmised it was to eliminate the wait staff from being stiffed by foreigners. 10) Great 40% off sale at the Patagonia Outlet during the Games. 11) People don't like to trade McDonald's Happy Meal toys for Olympic pins 12) Do not make fun of youth groups "performing" on Main Street. 13) Tickets are being bought and sold very openly outside of every venue and downtown and finally... 14) Never ask for directions to "that Temple Thingy" |
I believe that scalping is leggal in salt lake city. I read somewhere that the turn out is not what expected an most hotels are lowring their rates in order to try to fill up. scalpers are lefting holding much of the bag so they are selling tickets at cost. if u were thinking about going to some olympic event, now is the time.

Scalping is indeed fully legal in SLC. In fact, they have a designated area downtown where scalpers and spectators can "find each other".
Chexfan, did you go to both the Olympic Park and Snowbasin? I am heading out this weekend and was just wondering how long it took you to get through security at each. Did you drive from downtown SLC or were you out in Park City? As for Traxx, the SLC government and SLOC only recently discovered that they had done a pretty bad job of a) building a decent light rail infrastructure, and b) letting people know about its constraints. By this I mean that Traxx has been advertised to no end in SLC. Only on New Year's Eve did the people in SLC realize that they had done such a good job of advertising that everybody thought Traxx was the answer to everything. Few people knew anything about Park and Ride, but everybody wanted to ride Traxx. I heard that there were waits of up to 2 hours to even get on an outbound Traxx train that night. Finally, I can't believe you found Patagonia! i always thought it was a local secret... |

Luckily, I've seen virtually no litter on the streets. Don't know where people are putting it! 6) Why? :-) There's plenty of beer available here. In my fridge, I currently have Sierra Nevada, Anchor Steam, Singha, Molson, Peroni, Sam Adams, and Corona. These were all purchased quite conveniently at the State Liquor Store and are definitely stronger than 3.2. Our local breweries include Squatters, Wasatch, Uinta (try a Cutthroat), and Red Rock; many of them are available on tap in restaurants & bars. You can also sample beer brought in specially from various countries, such as Norway and Germany, whose hospitality sites are open to the public. 7) In Salt Lake City: the Last Lap (aka Club Axis), which is basically the official dance club for athletes and is open to the public; Fleming's, a steakhouse/wine bar with over 100 wines by the glass; the Zephyr Club, a great laidback place for live music; Brewvies (movie theater/bar), which is showing Oly events on its movie screens for no admission; Sam Weller's Books (right on Main Street); I could go on, but trust me, there are plenty of great places here. 9) Yep, just about every restaurant has added an 18% gratuity on every bill (regardless of the size of your party). And unfortunately, many places have jacked up their prices tremendously (as much as 30%). I hope everyone from out of town is having fun. I've had a blast these last several days. |

We left a little before 6, drove out, stopped at the McDonalds, went to the Wal-Mart, parked went through security and walked up to the ski jump w/ plenty of time. The folks with whom we were staying went out to Snowbasin and had no problems either. <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by jja34-1: Finally, I can't believe you found Patagonia! i always thought it was a local secret...</font> |
Thanks for all the great tips. I look forward to connecting with others for a FT gathering at the "O"lympics. I got all my tickets from members of FlyerTalk including men's hockey USA vs. Russia. So there is little doubt in my mind that my staying on the good side of the TOS that many, many good things can come your way from FT.
I'm ready for the fun and the competition and even got a reservation for La Caille for Valentines Day with the girlfriend with the help of yet another FlyerTalker. Actually that reservation was probably harder than the Olympic tickets. See you all there Thurs-Sun this week. |
Enjoy! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
And it's not too late to go! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif $88-$138 -- Last-Minute to the Olympics/Salt Lake City http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/006399.html |
Attention all SLC area FlterTalkers.
I have a reservation at the Red Iguana on Friday night (2/15) at 7 pm. I'd love to run into any locals or others and talk a few miles and talk about the Olympics. I'll be the ugly guy there and have some pins to trade..... |
Well, I'll be there wearing my FT pin, but I won't trade it! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
