Proposing Chicago Flyertalk Dinner/Drinks in December

I was originally intending this for United folks in Chicago, but what the heck, everyone's welcome http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I have personally met several very nice FTers since I moved to Chicago from Boston three months ago, and was mentioning to iluv2fly that it would be nice to have a friendly gathering before the end of the year.

Here's what I propose - a Monday evening soiree (dinner/drinks) in downtown Chicago in early December.

Interested parties please HOLLER and I will place you on my mailing list and handle the details.

Please feel free to suggest dates and/or places to go. Weeknights are preferable.

How about Gino's East where Planet Hollywood used to be, or even Dick's Last Resort if you are downtown...

Otherwise I've always *LOVED* Flat Top Grill on Belmont (or the one in Evanston is good too)...

Ugh, I miss living in Chicago... (McClurg Court on E. Ontario!)... and doing the AM jog down to Meigs and back http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif Now i'm spitting sand outta muh mouth in Vegas http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I was in the same tower, 7th floor.... :P Never had much of a long wait for the elevators unless I was in the laundry room on the 2nd floor *blah*

I do miss running down to the White Hen Pantry in my PJs :P That was always convenient :-)

And of course the theater was convenient and but for some reason the chinese restaurant adjacent too it took 30 minutes to deliver my food ... never quite understood that :P

Wow, wonderful. I'm on the 26th (stalkers don't come near me. I am a fierce BIAATCH j/k). It's a bit pricey compared to well, the rest of Chicago, but then again it's in downtown http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Yep, White Hen saves the day, especially during the winter I bet !

Too bad you won't be in Chicago http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif However, I *might* be heading to LAS sometime early next year, probably even January. Maybe we can meet for dinner or a drink.

Oh, no stalkers on the 7th floor...

and nothing wrong with bragging we lived @ McClurg Court... heck, I was 20 and was making $5k a month... :P think I was going to stay living up in Rogers Park forever? :-) :-)

Does United and Lufthansa still have the ticket office at the Stone Container Building down on Michigan and (forgot what block it is, but just one north of Washington I think)...... anyway, my view was nice and I liked it...

High Flyah,

Will not be there before the end of the year, but will be there for my GSB graduation in March. Get in some drinking and eating practice and I hope you can join the group I will try to round up for more of same in March. Have had a few good gatherings there. That town is fantastically hospitable and the people that live/ travel there from FT are the tops.

Catch you soon,

Mike

Gino's East??? Izzat still around? My boyfriend took me there right about this time in 1979. Deep dish pizza, right?

There's also a Flat Top on North Ave a few blocks west of Wells. Went there for the first time a couple weeks ago and it's now at the top of my favorite places.

Still around...A quick look at the yellow pages shows 9 of them.

Comicwoman Nov 18, 2001 9:22 pm

Count me in, even if I don't live in McClurg Court.

UAPremierExec Nov 18, 2001 9:25 pm

They moved from their original shop on East Superior to the old Planet Hollywood near LaSalle and Ontario.. it's much larger and nicer.. no more long lines outside in the winter!

And I was not aware there was now a Flat Top Grill in the loop!! I LOVE their desserts!! MMMMMMMMM beats the crap we have in Las Vegas anyday... I swear the airlines and hotel kitches are all in the same place! :P

I'm up for anything *but* the 10th :P I will be through ORD on the 28th, 3rd, MDW on the 4th (trying out ATA's 737-800 and 757-300).... not sure about any other trips, but i'd make one out to come back to Chicago... I need to hit IKEA again in Schaumburg and hit Field's downtown... time for natester to start making my Xmas Frango chocolate baskets!!!

Would love to do this on 12/10 except I have to fly out that night to BWI. The only way I could do dinner is if it was out by ORD. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Hopefully next time...although there is a Gino's East out by ORD... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Anna S,

I will be suggesting two dates, Dec 3 and 10th both Monday nights. I'll take a vote from everyone who's interested and we'll see which day we meet. Works for you?

Yeah they're still around. If I recall there's a few of them in Chicago. I went to the one on Ontario down the block from the Hard Rock in May.

If it's on the 3rd, I can "miss" my 1PM flight to FLL and meet, but I'd have to try to catch the 600PM to Ft Laud

Sorry, should have specified that Mondays for dinner downtown generally don't work out for me. I do the ORD-BWI every Mon. night on the 8:30ish flight. That means dinner for me would need to be by ORD. I do appreciate you guys trying to arrange around me though.

Now a Fri. night I could do... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Ahh, unfortunately, alot of people probably have "better things" to do with their weekend nights than to meet with random Internet people http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I'm just thinking that most people probably have to have dinner with family or close friends.

In addition, I think my friend iluv2fly can't make any December Fridays, so Monday it shall remain. Sorry AnnaS http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

klau88,

Nope, there are no ORD-SFO redeyes due to the time difference. A ORD-SFO flight would have to depart at 2am to be a redeye to SFO since the latest ORD-SFO flight is at 9:25pm arriving just before midnight SFO time.

Like I said before, it's o.k., hopefully I can hook up with you guys some other time. At some point (maybe next year?) some of us Chi-town folks could organize a larger FT to-do?

I posted this on the UA board.

I'm in ORD over the next week or two but on the 10th I'm heading back to LHR with BA.

I guess I can't get out to ORD in time for the flight. So near yet so far!

Hope to see you folks there!

I'm interested in meeting you all on the10th. Posted in UA topic... but it seems to have disappeared.

Used to live near Water Tower... now in Dearborn Park.

Anywhere downtown would be great. jan

I was away for Thanksgiving and am just catching up. I am fairly sure that I can make any Monday. I work downtown but live in the burbs. By the way, I have not found the food at the "new" Gino's East to be very good. Not at all equal to the old place. Just my opinion.

woodie Nov 26, 2001 9:36 am

Is the 1oth onor dropped in favour of next May?

I'll be in ORD on Wed nt Thu Nt. Do I need thermals yet?

beaubo Nov 26, 2001 8:21 pm

High Flyah-
Thanks for taking the initiative.

Lets see, on Dec 10, I'll be transiting at ORD from GRB on the way back to CLE...celebrating the Packers victory over da Bears! So, what better way to party than in the lair of the Bear. So, if this shindig gets confirmed, I;ll detour and pop by.
Please keep me posted.

*HighFlyah* Nov 27, 2001 10:38 am

The 10th is still on. I'm finalizing details and will be posting a separate thread soon.

I will go out on a limb here and make an assumption that I am indeed one of the several nice FTers that H.F. has met and now that I am back from SYD (having met some very nice FTers there from all over the world), I can add my 2 cents (US$, not A$). I hope that many of you can join us with this get-together. It would be a blast to meet more of you and make new friends. My thanks to H.F. for taking the initiative for this project. See you all soon!

I wish I could make it, but with UAL's prices for SFO-ORD, and the need to get back early on Tuesday, I don't think I can make it.

Huh? UA is around $202 for 12/8 to 12/11 on SFO-ORD. 'Bout as cheap as it gets. In fact I just booked a sameday return for $182 with a 15% off cert. Which will let me clear 1P by about 53 miles http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Put me down as good for the 10th.

I'm not seeing any of those fares. I'm looking on orbitz to make it quick. Please list flight numbers if you get a chance. Are you doing same day return on the 10th? Best I see now is $272.

Frequent Freak Nov 27, 2001 10:45 pm

Leave SFO 12/8 on UA 152, 858, 146 or 136 (these depart 9a, 9.40a, 6.10p and 11.35p).

Leave ORD 12/11 on UA 131, 141, 147 or 155 (these depart noon, 3.10p, 4.44p and 9.25p).

$212.50 on Orbitz, $202.50 on ual.com. These are NOT Internet-only fares, so you can use certificates.

Other flights the same days are more expensive even though ual.com shows them with 9's across the board. I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to go standby on UA 809 (the 8.10a departure) Tuesday morning.

I booked 131 and 146 for 12/15. $182.82 including a trip to the very busy Michigan Avenue CTO to redeem my cert.

kluau88 Nov 28, 2001 12:34 am

I was looking to fly into ORD monday afternoon and leave tuesday morning.

Bonk Nov 28, 2001 12:54 am

I was also looking at flying out on Monday, returning on Tuesday and found:
UA 132 (9a.m.)
UA 131 (noon)
for $232.50
