An Excellent SAN weekend

As I have already completed my participation in the SAN weekend activities (I won't be at tomorrow's events), I wanted to post a public thank you to SanDiego1K and Captain Mike for all their work in putting together the weekend.

Based on today's activities it looks to be a great success.

We were greeted at the SAN Commuter Terminal by FTers holding a banner welcoming us to the weekend, and SanDiego1k passing out pre-printed stickers with our FT handle and real name.

About 30-40 of us gathered first to see a presentation of the airport's noise measurement and abatement software. It was pretty cool to see how they keep a record of the flight path of every flight, and can model it in 3d, and even super-impose it over the location of any noise complainee. Pretty neat.

Next - a demo by one of the Harbor Police K9 "officers" - nicely narrated by his human handler.

And then the highlight - the tower tour. While groups of 5 went upstairs to check out the controllers in action, the rest of the group downstairs had an extensive, interesting Q&A with the chief controller (title?).

The next couple of hours were spent at the Windsock Restaurant patio (we got there in time to see the BA 777 take off) relaxing in the afternoon sun and talking about, well, what do you think?

It was fun renewing old acquaintances and forging new ones.

That's the overview. It's tough to pick a specific highlight - it was just too cool getting to see and learn ALL that behind the scenes stuff. I'll let others fill in the rest.

San Diego 1K and Captain Mike have done a fantastic job organizing this. I'm sure everyone had a great time yesterday (Friday), and the airport control tower visit was the highlight (for me, at least). I was also surprised how much engine noise there was when we sat at the end of the runway in late afternoon having drinks(probably the first time I've ever sat at the end of a runway watching planes take off).

Dinner at the Rock Bottom Brewery downtown was very good, and I was surrounded by a bunch of new FlyerTalk faces, and we talked about flying for hours. Well worth the trip. Looking forward to dinner in Balboa Park tonight.

I was VERY impressed with the airport tour. This is an extremely well done/ organized flyer talk event. I'd praise it more... but then who could put up with with Captain Mike and San Diego 1k after that...

I have to further compliment and boost our hosts egos. As a flyertalk "virgin" this was an extremely interesting and fun event -- and I met many really dynamic people, heard some interesting stories, learned a tremendous amount, and realized, I am not alone

Regardless, watch out for that ChannelCing, its the Ms. Marilyn Monroe in-carnate.

Always in good spirits.

See you on the board,
Adam

I second Adam's comments... I didn't know how fun this weekend would be, both during and after the scheduled activities. It was great meeting all of you, and special thanks to Carol, Mike, Mark, and everyone else who helped plan the weekend!!!

AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!

I missed the SAN weekend!!!!! Born and raised in SAN, I visit SAN so much that my car can drive down the 405 and 5 on auto pilot (my parents still live in SAN, my wife's parents still live in SAN) and to top it off, I am now ending up going to SAN this weekend

The control tower tour, the bomb sniffing dog, noise abatement, food, drink, hanging out with fellow travel sickos. I must have really angered one of the Flyer Gods in a past life to be so punished

I just went to the dinner Saturday evening. Had a great time. Really enjoyed meeting and talking with some great people.

Thank you Captain Mike and SanDiego1K as you both did a great job organizing and bringing this event off. I know it was easy to start as the idea came from a chat on evening, the work was in doing the event and you two as well as help from several other made it a fun time for all.

Thank you again and see you soon.
