FT in YVR - Adventure North of the Border
It's time to take advantage of the great exchange rates in Canada. I volunteer to lead the adventurous on a tour of the restaurants, shopping, and bars!!
Any adventurers out there interested for May 18-20? TropicalFlyer http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
I was hoping for something in February. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
There's nothing wrong with your dates; I'm just looking for HHonors stay possibilities *ahem* earlier in the year. |
May would be perfect for me since I have no travel plans.
Maybe I can talk Wanderlust into heading up north as well. DOn't know if he's been there. Plus I have an unusued Air Canada ticket so I can fly to Seattle and maybe head up on AC from there. Keep me posted Tropical FLyer. |
Methinks I typed too soon...
United Canada Sale If you’ve been contemplating travel to or from Canada, now is the time to act! United is now offering special fares up to 40% off our lowest year-round prices to Canada through January 16, 2001. These special fares require a 7 day advance purchase as well as a Saturday night stay. You may travel between January 5 and May 10, 2001, giving you plenty of time to take advantage of these great prices. |
Will check the calendar, but I sure will try to make that one...
|
May is too far down the road for me to say just yet but since I am in Vancouver about every two months anyway, I'm hopeful I will be able to attend.

We talked about a Vancouver do at the last Seattle one. I am always looking for an excuse. As with MileageAddict, it's bit soon for me to commit, but I am a definite maybe.
|
It's a little early for me too, but I'm a definite possibility see in as I grew up in New Westminster. Besides a reason to visit my Mom and Brother are always welcome. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
------------------ Cheers Scott |
We are always up for a trip to Vancouver.
|
Sounds promising to me - the weekend is free, and the week before or after would work out for a visit to Seattle (haven't been there in over two years, so I'm due).
Punki, any chance I can bum a ride up or back with you and Joe? |
Yes yes yvr yes yes yvr yes yes yvr yes yes Anything that has to do with Vancouver gets my vote. In August 2000 I made my 50th trip to Vancouver since I first set eyes on this magnificent city as a grad student in 1987. May is a little early for Wreck Beach, but then again empanadas and "funny" brownies might not be everyone's idea of lunch, not to mention... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/eek.gif Count me in any time after about May 1. |
johna, if we drive, (and we probbly will) you are most certainly welcome to join us.
|
Any suggestions on Hotels Tropical Flyer?
If I can find a good fare to San Fran or Seattle for that weekend, I can combine with my A/C ticket and be there. Sounds like fun! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
lead the adventurous on a tour of the restaurants, shopping, and bars!!
Any adventurers out there interested for May 18-20? TropicalFlyer http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I would be interested in a trip to Vancouver anytime after March 30th...keep me posted!! Also -(OT) we are thinking of possibly buying a condo there and renting it out - anyone know a good source of info for US residents buying property in Canada??? ------------------ "I always think there's a band, kid..." |
Well..since I move there in 11 hours...I could probably make it...and help out. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

May 18-20 doesn't work for me but the first weekend in May (5-6) would work and allow all to take advantage of the UA fare sale.
|
Sorry the dates don't coincide with the seat sale. Maybe there will be another one later on. I can't do this earlier at this point.
I think a bar crawl downtown on Friday night would be a good start. My personal favourite bar is the one in the Wedgewood hotel so we can use this as a rendezvous point. Saturday an optional sightseeing/shopping tour will be offered. Saturday night will be the big dinner. Sunday is definitely dim sum time. Hotel suggestions in the downtown area are Westin Grand, Sheraton Soleil, and Hyatt Regency, Sheraton Wall. No Hiltons in the downtown area. There are also several boutique hotels that are quite wonderful like the Georgian Court. Public transit is great so I think we'll only have to get a van or vans if enough people want to go sightseeing/shopping on Saturday. Anyway, the majority of activities will be in the downtown area so you can drink all you want. More info soon. [This message has been edited by TropicalFlyer (edited 01-11-2001).] |
"Hampton Inn & Suites" is part of the Hilton family.
|
So are the dates May 18-20 now locked in?
Let me know so I can go start hunting for hotels and airfares (and find a way to get from California to Vancouver, and use that leg wiht my Air canada ticket.) |
Are the dates set for sure? I found $238 on AS SNA-SEA-YVR for those dates. Any Heavenly Beds available?
|
I sooooo want to come!!! I've only ever met a few FTers and mostly only from Canada. I think it's about time that I get in on one of these cool events http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
YVR is such a great city. Count me in!!! |
I found a rate of around 165 a night at the Westin Grand so I grabbed it for these two nights.
I am guessing the dates are LOCKED IN. Looking foward to it. |
Yes, the dates (May 18-20) are locked in.
Catman, 95% of the flights between LAX or SFO and YVR are Air Canada so you'll have no trouble using your ticket. I forgot about the Hampton Inn. I still have trouble associating all the hotels that have merged. This is starting to gel nicely. TropicalFlyer |
Michael and I are in because we love Vancouver. We'll be making a long weekend of it and have reservations at the Renaissance. By the way, Punki, have we thrown out the idea of a party train up to Vancouver? Joe and I discussed this idea at the last Seattle get-together. It's something to think about.
|
Heck no, Paula. I never throw out good ideas and, frankly, I think a party train would be a blast. I honestly had just forgotten about it but am totally all for the idea.
|
Put me on a definitely maybe list too. May is so far off.
|
Sorry no can do that weekend as already have other travel plans http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
|
johna, Horizons: SFO-YVR RT $142 including taxes on UA or UA/AC codeshare; WE7NW6 fare basis. Must purchase online by Feb. 9.
newself: SNA-X/SFO-YVR $223.08 including taxes. (X/LAX for $6 more.) [This message has been edited by EPS (edited 01-29-2001).] |
With the deals that EPS just found, I'd better see more FTers in Vancouver. I'm actually in YVR right now. It's sunny but cold. I'm sure it'll warm up by May.
The exchange rate right now is 1 USD = 1.51 Cdn. Needless to say, the shopping is great!! TF |
Thanks, EPS! I happened to catch that fare when it came out last week and bought it on the spot: $159, including all taxes and fees. The only downside was that the only flights that worked for me were UA codeshares on AC, so no bonus miles or earned credit toward upgrades. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif But the great FlyerTalk events will make up for that! |
I'm in. UA Express(Skywest) between SEA and YVR and exit rows on the Shuttle flights.
|
Couldn't resist. Just booked tickets from SFO, also with a connection at SEA into YVR, for $154RT (less a $100 voucher I'll put towards it).
Fly up Friday afternoon, and home late Sunday morning (have to be at work Sunday night). |
Just linking chexfan's Inside Info on Vancouver thread for future reference.
|
Just stumbled into this thread so info for those of you trying to find YVR hotels...
www.tourism-vancouver.com Tourism YVR provides discount hotel for those that book through them, rates are quite good. No need to prepaid. I have used them many times are they are very reliable. Rates are usually better than what you can find booking directly with hotels. There are rates such as CDN $139-$149 for Westin Grand, CDN $109 for Fairmount Vancouver Airport. |
Some of us have Vancouver recommendations here: http://www.flyersplaces.com
It is a board sponsored by a small group of FT'ers... Dorian |
I just booked a Priceline room for this..$US20 per night for a 3 star (plus $20 added to my bid on the AMEX promo) and got the Renaissance Hotel on West Hastings, which looks pretty central, just in case anyone is looking for something. The AMEX promo runs out next week.
|
I've found a fare on Alaska Air Lines for $241 for SAN/YVR/SAN, arriving late Friday (5/18/01) into Vancouver, with a return Sunday (5/20/01) at 1:00 p.m. If I pair that with a Priceline room at $20 per night (see post above), this is looking better and better. Could someone post a "firmed up" schedule for the weekend and a list of attendees so I can book this for sure? Thanks!
[This message has been edited by Captain Mike (edited 03-28-2001).] |
If I'm in town, I'm in.
|
Will post schedule, attendees, etc. this weekend. I just got back from the Catman Do Trois and need to catch up on work first.
|
Please list Joh and I as definite maybes.
