Snow @ Catman Do?

The weather channel is predicting snow for next weekend in the Big Apple. Not a problem for this Left Coaster, it just means that the beer will be colder! CYA there!

Living in an area where going 30 miles can create a 30 degree change in the temp I tend to deal with the weatherpeople in a very sceptical manner and sometimes wonder why they just don't look out the window - because what they are reporting in real time isn't anything like what is taking place.
Anyway for what it is worth and to provide a differing opinion. www.wunderground.com
Friday
Partly cloudy. Low in the upper 30s and high near 50.
Saturday
Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers. Low in the lower to mid 30s. High in the mid to upper 40s.
Sunday
Variable cloudiness. Low in the upper 20s to mid 30s. High in the 40s.

Snow? That would make me feel at home http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

My bones are hurting already...glenlivet neat, with a large water back, no ice.

Boots and long underwear are being tossed in the suitcase right now. And painkillers. Didn't someone mention something about it being too cold in March during the planning stage? Yeh, I know, I'm a wimp.

dhammer53 Mar 19, 2001 2:15 pm

magic,
I e mailed you and it came back. Please e mail me. I need some info for the Brooklyn tour.

note to newself....what are you? A troublemaker!!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tongue.gif It will not rain on my tour of Brooklyn. And that's final! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

whew! Thanks EPS for setting us straight.

newself Mar 19, 2001 4:59 pm

I guess their broadcast and their website use different prediction methods. Oh well, I guess it is back to shorts. Dan, I will not cause any trouble...just as long as we get to stop and have a cold one from time to time.

newself Mar 20, 2001 9:06 pm

Now the Weather.com website is predicting showers for Saturday and showers and snow for Sunday. Rain and snow cannot stop the Dan Hammer mobile on Saturday...Brooklyn here we come!

tom911 Mar 20, 2001 9:20 pm

My Thursday arrival at EWR, flying down from Dulles, looks like it might be challenging. Just watched the CBS 2 news from NYC that is forecasting heavy rains on Wednesday night and Thursday. Also found the following:
Severe Weather Alert
BULLETIN - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED FLOOD WATCH NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY 345 PM EST TUE MAR 20 2001

...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A FLOOD WATCH FOR SMALL STREAMS AND URBAN AREAS IN NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY SOUTHEAST NEW YORK AND SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT FOR WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY...

A LOW PRESSURE CENTER OVER GEORGIA WILL INTENSIFY AS IT MOVES SLOWLY UP THE EAST COAST...REACHING THE NORTH CAROLINA/VIRGINIA BORDER BY LATE WEDNESDAY. IT WILL THEN DRIFT NORTHEAST OVER THE COASTAL WATERS PASSING SOUTH THEN EAST OF LONG ISLAND BY THURSDAY EVENING.

RAIN ASSOCIATED WITH THIS DEVELOPING NOREASTER WILL REACH OUR AREA WEDNESDAY MORNING. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT RAIN IS EXPECTED TO FALL ACROSS OUR REGION WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY THURSDAY. ALL THIS RAIN IS THEN EXPECTED TO TAPER OFF TO SCATTERED SHOWERS THURSDAY NIGHT.

RAINFALL AMOUNTS COULD TOTAL NEAR 1 1/2 INCHES WITH SOME LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS OF 2 INCHES IN THOSE FAVORABLY UPSLOPE AREAS. 1 TO 1 1/2 INCHES OF RAIN WILL CAUSE SIGNIFICANT WITHIN BANK RISES ON MANY OF THE RIVERS AND STREAMS WITHIN THE BROOKHAVEN HYDROLOGIC SERVICE AREA.

CURRENT FLASH FLOOD GUIDANCE FOR SMALL STREAMS AND TRIBUTARIES INDICATES THAT 2 INCHES OF RAIN WILL CAUSE SMALL STREAM FLOODING IN THE HYDROLOGIC SERVICE AREA.

THE HEAVIEST RAIN EXPECTED TO FALL OVERNIGHT WEDNESDAY INTO EARLY THURSDAY MORNING WILL MAKE THE RUSH HOUR A MESS. FLOODING OF ROADWAYS AND POOR DRAINAGE AREAS IS LIKELY.

Just looked at some flights from Dulles into Newark for today (Wed) and many have been cancelled.

From the FAA site:
----
Due to WIND/LOW CEILINGS, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving Newark International Airport (EWR). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 3 hours and 30 minutes with some arriving flights receiving as much as 6 hourDue to WIND/LOW CEILINGS, departure traffic destined to New York City's Laguardia Airport (LGA) is currently experiencing delays averaging 5 hours and 3 minutes, with some flights receiving as much as 9 hours and 29 minutes delay.
---

I'd hate to be the person delayed 9 hours and 29 minutes today.

This is probably a stupid question but what is the dress code for the Cite dinner event?

Actually, I asked Catman the same question last week. He said "Dressy Casual" for all the events. I plan on wearing a polo shirt and khahkis to Cite.

Applefan Mar 22, 2001 6:43 am

I received this email from Catman last night.

HI James/Applefan! thanks for writing.

I have unregistered from Flyertalk so I can't post anymore. But to
answer your question:

The dress code is dressy casual. No flip flops and tee shirts are not
recommended. It's a nice, classy restaurant but you don't have to come
in formal wear.

If you can James, could you post this on F-T and say you talked to me
and this is what the restaurant told me.

Looking forward to meeting you this weekend.

My welcome to NYC was rain and more rain. It's in the 40's at night. However, nothing stands between me and shopping so I bundled up in a cashmere sweater, pants (definitely not a skirt) wool coat, scarf, gloves and an umbrella and ventured out. Brrr....

I've got the model UN happening at my hotel (Hilton Rockefeller Cntr) and Bill Clinton is coming to talk this weekend. Luckily, the Executive lounge is very warm here. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I made it into the City from the Newark Airport at 10pm Thursday night, greeted by light rain (thankyou, United, for the 2 1/2 hour delay).

I'm at an Easy Everything internet cafe on 42nd St between 7th and 8th. Right now 42 mins for $1. Just enough time to check mail and FlyerTalk before I head down and meet Magic111 at the Hilton Millenium. Weather is on the cool side ride now, but not raining.

tom911 Mar 24, 2001 8:05 am

Friday was a great day to tour NYC.

I headed out at 11 with Magic111, and we hit the Staten Island Ferry, had a hot dog from a street vendor, visited the South Street Seaport, went on the New York Stock Exchange tour and saw the trading floor, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, and then trained over to 34th St for quick visits by the Empire State Building, Macys, and then by train again down to Rockefeller Center, a quick pop into the NBC store, over to St. Patricks, and then off to Idlewild for drinks.

Had bright blue skies with miles and miles of visibility. Great day to be walking around the City. Hope it holds today for the Brooklyn tour, about to get underway in an hour. Looks good so far.

Today's been a beautiful day in New York in Midtown. A little windy but Mother Nature definitely co-operated and snow is nowhere to be seen. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Just a few splashes of rain, nothing to complain about.

I am now home after a great weekend in NYC(trip report will come up shortly) and I couldnt see any snow at all http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Kitty Hawk Mar 26, 2001 10:13 am

For those of you who WANTED snow, you should have stayed an extra day. It's been snowing all morning, although it's only sticking on the grass (and yes, we have grass in NY). So really it's just a wet, grey, nasty, cold, disgusting day.

AAPlatinum Mar 26, 2001 10:36 am

With warm memories of the Catman-do-trois!

Can't wait till the Catman-do-quatre!!

tom911 Mar 26, 2001 8:56 pm

We may have missed the snow for the Catman Do Trois weekend, but let there be no doubt there was snow when I headed out of Manhattan this morning (Monday). Even had to be deiced at EWR while snow was still coming down. Fortunately, only delayed about 30 minutes getting out of there.

Goldlust Mar 28, 2001 7:08 am

I'm sure glad I didn't see the warning about snow before I left - I brought quite good clothes for the weather in NYC, actually.
