DC dinner Dec 17th, anyone?

Hey guys, any of the DC crowd want to meet for dinner on Dec 17th? I'll be getting in early afternoon (driving), staying at the St Regis, visiting GWU Med Center on the 18th, and leaving afterward.

richard Oct 29, 2000 9:20 pm

Love to!

richard Oct 29, 2000 9:20 pm

Love to get together then.

naxos Oct 30, 2000 5:39 am

Will try.

Date noted, burkey. I'll try as well.

freefaller12k Oct 30, 2000 8:38 am

I'll be in Hanover, MD that week. I'll see if I can make it down/over.

There's about a 50% chance of my being in DC on the 17th, and if so I'd love to join you all. Please keep me posted on developments.

markbach Nov 4, 2000 11:29 am

I'm in.

BTW: Westin Fairfax is $119 for Sun night if you want to save some $$$.

Update: Fixed to correct Westin http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

BostonBoy Nov 4, 2000 12:27 pm

Maybe. We'll probably be on a holiday cruise/land vacation then, but if not, maybe.

burkey Nov 5, 2000 10:21 am

Hey guys, glad to see folks are interested in dinner. I'm not overly familiar with DC, so any of you locals have suggestions for us?

SMessier Nov 5, 2000 10:25 am

Am flying back to Germany that evening (I did try to get a seat for the 18th, but no dice), so maybe we can have a beer in the afternoon after you get in?

richard Nov 5, 2000 5:21 pm

Burkey, I'm sorta a local, but only have been living here one year. I'll try to think of some suggestions and post them here.

geo1004 Nov 6, 2000 6:42 am

burkey - not to worry. The St. Regis (the ex-Ritz Carlton downtown) is within walking distance of both the Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle areas. Both have many, many options.

TravelinWilly Nov 7, 2000 4:35 pm

I'm new to this board, but what the hell - if I don't fly out to SF that Sunday, I'll show!

joanek Nov 7, 2000 6:26 pm

Now it looks like I'll be home for the weekend...I'll try to join you.

naxos Nov 8, 2000 5:47 am

Joanek, Oh good, we need some female company. Let me know if you go.

markbach Nov 12, 2000 1:04 pm

Seemed like rates at ALL the DC properties went up in the last week! Just booked the 4pts downtown at $89, after they confirmed over the phone that the renovations are complete, and that they have a club level, and high-speed internet access in all rooms. So, now all that is left is to decide whether to drive or Amtrak it. See you all on the 17th.

burkey Nov 12, 2000 2:12 pm

Mark-- I'd offer you a ride, but I'm not leaving from Philly, rather from Harrisburg. But if that should change, I'll let you know.

TribeFlyer Nov 13, 2000 11:14 am

Wish I could add myself to the list of female attendees, but I'm singing in a choral concert that day--next time, burkey! Have a wassail for me!

burkey Nov 18, 2000 9:18 am

Just bringing this forward... Any suggestions for a resturant?

geo1004 Nov 21, 2000 1:26 pm

burkey, et al:

bad news
: I'll be out of town that weekend and won't land at BWI until after 10 pm. Sorry I will miss the DC dinner. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

good news: I'm doing a mile run to SEA (first time there) that, including a 10,000 mile online booking bonus, will net me 22,000 US Airways miles. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

worldbanker Nov 21, 2000 1:42 pm

Glad to see an event taking place close to home. After a great get together in Dusseldorf among FT I would love to join you. Has a restaurant been established yet? How many others are coming?

burkey Nov 21, 2000 6:23 pm

Well it seems the following are/might be in:

naxos
freefaller12k
markbach
TravelinWilly
joanek
worldbanker

Still haven't decided on a place...

jetsetter Nov 25, 2000 5:32 pm

I'll try to make it. Also people out of BOS or LGA should note that both the US and DL shuttles are offering $79-$99 fares for weekend travel. I have a thread over on General Travel Talk that shows the links, and describes each offer in some detail.

Viajero Joven Nov 29, 2000 7:38 am

Oooh!! The first FT get-together in my neighborhood.... but I arrive in DCA at 9:30pm on the last US BOS shuttle. What time were you guys thinking??

Randy Petersen Nov 29, 2000 8:41 pm

I will be in DC from the 21st til the 27th. If any of you are still a round, would love to visit sometime during that period. I will be visiting US Airways, MCI and Marriott on the 22nd.

Punki Nov 29, 2000 8:51 pm

OK, Georgie Porgie, when will you be in Seattle? Did you just forget to e-mail me or what? With friends like you and Koko...........well...................

I absolutely insist on doing something when you are here, even if you only have time to meet the RCC/1K crew, I'll be there to buy the drinks. Hopefully, we'll have time for dinner at least.

I just never pass up the opportunity to hang out with a gorgeous, brilliant young blond man. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I suggest the following:

The Daily Grill on 18th or Connecticut (I'm not sure) and N I think at the corner. Excellent food and very popular.

Sesto Senso just up the block from the Daily Grill on 18th I think.

Buca De Bepa (sp??) up Connecticut a near the Ruth Chris Steakhouse on the right before you get to the Washington Hilton and Towers.

If you like Indian food then I recommend the Taj Mahal on Conneticut Ave on the right.

The Capital Grill on New York Ave.

The Red Tomatoe somewhere around L or M and 22nd I think. EXCELLENT FOOD

The GrillFish in the same area as the Red Tomatoe.

Cafe Asia on 19th between L and M.
Smith and Wolensky near Cafe Asia
Sam and Harry's two blocks up on 19th betwen M and N I think.

All of the above are excellent choices and all are moderately priced (for DC that is) with the exception of the last two. They are steak houses and the entrees are going to run about $20-$25 plus your salad, veggie, drinkssss... But the steak at Smith and Wolensky is my favorite, even better than the Morton's in DC. Which is not that special if you ask me.

I could go on for a while longer about great places to eat. I myself try to avoid the chains and find the local top choices.

There is another one, it's the best Northern Italian I've had and it's near the corner of 23 and P which is not far from Dupont Circle. I can't think of the name of it at the moment.

All of the above serve a wide variety of food. The Daily Grill is a familiar favorite of mine and I love the Chicken Marsala with sauteed spinach and mashed potatoes, yum yum. Start with the Spicy Pecan Endive Salad and you won't be disapointed. The DG does need reservations on most nights Tues-Sat as it's very popular among the locals.

If you want a good bar to meet for drinks/smoke then I recommend the lobby bar at the Mayflower. Excellent environment, beautiful furnishings, great service and a nice ambiance (sp??). Then it's a short walk to many of the places I mentioned above.

Good luck and whatever you chooose to try you wont' be disappointed.

Viajero Joven Dec 7, 2000 5:37 pm

What's the latest word on the time (and place)? I can meet you guys for drinks at 10, as long as the late US Air BOS shuttle arrives on time.

burkey Dec 7, 2000 6:32 pm

I'll probably meet with markbach and AnnaS for lunch, time and place at AnnaS's choice.

I'd need to have dinner between 6-7 pm, since I have an early morning the following day.

Place still to be determined... I'll let one of the locals choose, please, since I'm not up on where to go.

GregW Dec 8, 2000 8:47 am

Geo1004--the St. Regis used to be the Carlton hotel and the Westin Fairfax was the Ritz Carlton until about 2 1/2 years ago. The St. Regis' rooms are OK and lobby is excellent, but the Westin Fairfax has nicer rooms and service but a less grand public areas.

Maybe I can join you for dinner--I live here!

Don't forget me Brent! Given that I am flying out that evening, I could just go into the city early, drop off my stuff at DCA, and meet with you and the gang at the location of your choice.

Isn't Mark getting in around 2pm or so?

As of now, yes, but I am most likely going to switch to an earlier train that gets in about 11:30.
