"- Keep in mind that in Germany smoking is allowed in bars and restaurants. There are some no-smoking sections, but it is nearly impossible to evade the smoke entirely"

AND why would I want to? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

ozstamps Nov 5, 2000 9:04 pm

Cigarman .. you'd just lurrrrrv the new LAWS that were set in place here in time for the Olympics. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif No smoking inside ANY restaurant, any time. Large fine for both you AND the restaurant. As every living soul here (read other diners) carries a cell phone and the cops enforce the law, so don't for a second think you won't get 'dobbed in' within seconds of lighting up! That is, if the filthy looks, tossed egg rolls, hand grenades, and verbal abuse have not made the point well before the cops arrive. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/eek.gif

Now in all public buildings (and many private ones) airports and restaurants smoking (anything!) is verboten.

I'm not aware of any non smoking section in any of the Düsseldorf restaurants, bars, discos, brewhouses.
May sound either barbaric or ... like paradise http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Mizu Nov 6, 2000 3:55 am

Oh, right, must have been the non smoking section at McDonalds that confused me... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

bernie Nov 6, 2000 5:25 am

It sure was - I forgot about Mc Donalds

ozstamps Nov 6, 2000 5:37 am

McSpeckpfannenkuchen for Sunday brunch?

Mizu Nov 6, 2000 8:35 am

Oz: Bernie, Rudi and I were at Meusers (the Speckpfannekuchen place), and they were sold out 11/9 until 11/19... even Bernie said he had never seen anything like that before.

Don't know if it is too late to take advantage, and forgive me if this has been discussed before, but if you are taking the train after flying from USA on LH or UA and/or if you think you could refare at this point and save $ on your intra-Europe flights, then this might be for you:

See more of Europe with Lufthansa's Eurofare.
Buy a round-trip transatlantic ticket on Lufthansa or United Airlines...
Lufthansa's Eurofare is the most practical and economical way to do more traveling in Europe. Purchase a round-trip transatlantic ticket on Lufthansa or United Airlines for travel from November 01, 2000 to March 31, 2001, in any class of service, and build it into a Lufthansa Eurofare ticket. It couldn't be easier.

...and add up to 6 flights within Europe at $89 each!
Just combine additional Lufthansa flights within Europe. Choose from more than 100 cities in 35 countries, and add up to 6 additional flight segments to your transatlantic ticket for only $89 each! That is your Eurofare ticket! Your European flight segments must be booked and purchased with your transatlantic ticket. All travel must be completed by April 7, 2001. Other restrictions may apply. Subject to change without notice. For complete Terms and Conditions click here or please call Lufthansa at 800 399-LUFT.

Got my plans finalized and will be able to attend. Will be in DUS for work and join on 11-10 p.m., leaving on 11-12 on UA 953. Have a business friend in town who might join - if he may. Looking forward to meet you all. Thanks to all helping to put this together.

With great reluctance and disappointment, I am going to have to cancel my trip to DUS and the bier und goose - fest. I have two trips next week, and I realize that the only way I can be prepared is to work on Saturday. A major hard disk failure last night, which is going to take me mega-hours to recover from, didn't help either. Perhaps I was engaging in wishful thinking, time-wise, when I decided to go in the first place. So I hope you all have a great time, & I will have to take a rain-check & see you all on the next one.

RichG - sorry you can't attend, we'll take pictures and I'm sure there will be another opportunity for savoring Altbier together.
