Mizu ! Speckpfannekuchen like "crepes" ??? Meuser's sure is not. It is famous in the entire region. 50 cm in diameter and THICK - according to my memory two share one. It is not sweet. The recipe is in no way even similar to the american pancakes. No "Speck" is NOT bacon. At least it is not like the american bacon. As I told you .... hard to describe. I'm desperate. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

USAFAN, there are better places than the Schiffchen, like those mentioned above. The other Schiffchen is a 3* Michelin recommended restaurant in D-Kaiserswerth. Delicious food.

Oz, lunch in traditional pubs is not the favorite on sunday mornings. But late breakfast is. There are a lot of pubs, where you'll find excellent breakfast - german style - no scrambled eggs, no sausages, no waffles with artificial whipped cream and , of course no american pancakes.

BB, ASTRA ? ... never heard. "south end" ? ... sounds no part of D.. 90 DEM (this is 40 $ !!!) for a hotel in D. .... seems strange. Give me the street adress and I'll let you know, what I think of location and place itself. I would not stay at that rate at any hotel in any major city in Germany - as long as I don't know the place.

Ubierstrasse 36 (just south of highway B326)

Supposed to be a 3 star with private bath, free parking, non-smoking room, color cable TV (who's going to be watching anyway?), hairdryer, shoe polish (that's a new one), sauna, solarium, breakfast room, 50m to tram, and Catman they allow small pets!

Special weekend rate (probably for their non-deluxe rooms -- deluxe rooms are 2X the price for the same nights) of 90 DEM includes service and all taxes.

I do prefer smaller hotels but thanks for checking Bernie. I am pretty comfortable in a variety of situations as long as I don't have rats gnawing on my ears and cockroaches feeding on my eyebrows http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Blondebomber - be great to meet you if your trip co-incides! (ps sleeping with airline sleeping mask stops the cockroaches chewing the eyebrows, but the ears are not protected from the gnawing rats. Now if you know one of the guys you nicked one pair of United's MILLION missing pairs of noise cancel headphones, you are in business http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Bernie .. you are the chief "Ringmaster" here, (thank you) so just happy sitting back learning and enjoying learning about a place I have never visited!

Move me to the confirmed list. Booked the flight yesterday (BWI-KEF-AMS). I won't get in until the 11th, but have a week after that to wander durch dem wiessen winterwald. Well mabye not white, but cold I'm sure. I haven't booked any hotels yet, but will post when I know. Also, may follow Dusseldorf with a trip south to the wine country (man can't live on bier alone) if anyone has any intrest or suggestions.

A more verbose description or link would greatly be appreciated.

The most prominent program for those of us on this side of the Atlantic is AAdvantage, of which Nikko became a member in June. 500-miles per stay. I posted more details on page 6 or 7 of the earlier thread on this event, and there is information about this on the Nikko Hotels website. As Nikko is part of the JAL corp, I assume miles can be earned in that carrier's program and possibly some other carriers.

Sorry, freefaller12k, didn't mean to be flip.

Unfortunately, I can't provide a link, but when you make a reservation online with Nikko, there is a field to indicate your preference of FF airline. I did check around the site and could see nothing indicating exactly which programs participate. But try 1-800-NIKKO-US for more info.

Here is a link indicating AA and JAL are partners:

Don't know the Astra, but when comparing to the other 2 1/2 * Hotels in the website's listing (of which I know some) ... hmmmh doesn't seem nice. Location is about 5-7km from downtown. Cab ride will cost some 15 DEM each way.

Freefaller12k-

You are practically in the Mosel to Rhine area - can't miss on white wines, especially Rieslings.

Looks like Scott the Flyer and I will be there. We confirmed our flights today and will be staying at the Hilton. So count us in as confirmed. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif We arrive Friday and leave Sunday United all around.
