Philly in August

I know some of you already posted when it would be good for the Philly get together in another thread, but if you could post it here, it'd be great. (My psych rotation is taking more time than I though it would, so this would be appreciated!) And then we can decide when is the best for all.

Catman Jul 8, 1999 6:38 pm

ANy weekend but the 20th. I'm seeing some good buddies out West.

Hopefully we can get a few people to Philly. I have not been there since a high school field trip in 19-81.

I hope the liberty bell is still there.

Burkey if you need help planning the Philly get together let me know. I am a doctoral student at Penn and will be in Philly for most of the summer. I would perfer the second weekend in August but I am open. So if you need any help let me know.

burkey Jul 8, 1999 8:31 pm

OK, I guess my head was still spinning after spending the last two days on Psych, and yes, I'm assigned to the lock-down unit no less. I should have mentioned that the first two weekends are out for me becuase of an exam, and the other I'll be out of town. So anytime after the first two would be great.

I don't have my schedule after the second week, but should I end up being on-call, I should be able to switch with someone. If not, I'll just be limited to the night time festivities.

Student, once we get a weekend established, I'll be in touch.. thanks.

bryan at webflyer Jul 8, 1999 10:58 pm

Brent, don't let all that psych mumbo-jumbo get to you. I just got finished teaching a psych class here in Colorado Springs. When you get to Freud, just watch them movie "Crumb," and it'll all make sense.

Seriously, though, I'm happy to assist if I can be of any help.
And any time between Aug 23-27 is best for me. Hope it comes together.

burkey Jul 10, 1999 2:32 pm

Bryan -- it's not the "mumbo-jumbo" that's a problem, what is a problem is too much noise from the Pt's, it's like a three ring cirus at times!

OK, let's shoot for the weekend of Friday the 27th. How's that work for everyone? (Bryan, I guess you're in town just during that week? If so, we could still meet for a drink.)

Catman -- since it seems like so far, you're the only one coming in from out of town, you can pick the "anchor hotel".... I've only ever been in the Marriott, Hyatt at the Bellevue, and Doubletree in the city. If you make a suggestion, I could go check it out, if necessary.

In the mean time, I'll try to get to the visitor's center to see if anything special is going on in town that weekend. Student, maybe you could take a look too?

Catman Jul 10, 1999 3:13 pm

Friday the 27th would work for me.

As for the "anchor" hotel... let's wait and see if anyone else is interested in coming.

But I would say check out any Hiltons, Westins, Marriotts or Sheratons (I'll even settle for Hyatt) to get another qualifying stay.

Really looking forward to this! http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

As a graduate of TUMS, I love to come back to the beloved home of my wife, as always. In fact, I was just there again this weekend. Unfortunately, I'll be in CA from 8/25/99 - 9/2/99! Hate to miss all the fun!

hershey Jul 13, 1999 11:25 am

Home Sweet home. I too will be away during this period. It's vacation time!

bryan at webflyer Jul 13, 1999 11:47 am

The 27th is cutting it close for me, but I'll make it. I believe EMD also expressed interest in attending, and a couple of others too. Hope we get lots of folks!

MileageAddict Jul 13, 1999 11:50 am

Hey! I'll be in the Philadelphia during August!

I could meet up with you guys anytime between 8/16 and 8/23.

geo1004 Jul 13, 1999 11:54 am

I'd be happy to snag an e-fare and fly up to Philly from DC. You guys pick the weekend and I'll be there if I can. http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

burkey Jul 13, 1999 4:28 pm

OK, lets stay on for the weekend of the 27th, unless there are any major objections.

Bryan and MileageAddict, maybe the three of us can meet up for a drink as well on the 23rd?

PremEx, if you're lurking around these parts, didn't you want to make million-miler before September?? I hear those miles calling you...

Djlawman Jul 13, 1999 7:14 pm

Should be around the weekend of the 27th, so I'll try to get together for part of the fun. After all, I'm right in the neighborhood.

Djlawman

bryan at webflyer Jul 13, 1999 10:05 pm

A drink on the 23rd would be great, Brent. I'm thirsty already.

MileageAddict Jul 14, 1999 12:04 am

Somebody name a meeting place already!

burkey Jul 14, 1999 3:30 pm

Bryan and MileageAddict -- For the 23rd, how about Dock Street Brewery? It's a micro-brew place in Center City next to the Four Seasons on 18th Street. As for the time, I'm not sure yet what my schedule will be then, so I have to wait a bit to commit to an exact time.

As for those of you interest in things going on during Fri (27th) and Sat (28th), I plan to get that info this Sat.

bryan at webflyer Jul 14, 1999 3:35 pm

I think I know the place, Brent. Shall we say about 7:00pm?

burkey Jul 15, 1999 4:25 pm

OK, for the 23rd, we can meet at 7pm at Dock Street Brewery, 2 Logan Sq (on 18th street, south of the Four Seasons). Right now we have MileageAddict, Bryan at WF, and I think Djlawman, other are welcome, of course!

For the weekend of the 27th, I'll post the details soon as I get them...

dgolds Jul 16, 1999 11:39 am

Looks like I will have a trip to Boston on 8/25-8/27 and a stop in Philly on the way home might be fun, so count me in as a definite maybe if dinner's late on the 27th, and for anything on the 28th.

I haven't been to Philadelphia since I moved out to California and I'm sure there's a better side to it than what I saw; I'd like to get to know the city better.

burkey Jul 18, 1999 10:56 am

Hope all of your weekends were good....and you all at least stayed cool.
Here's what is going on so far:

Aug 23rd--

MileageAddict, Bryan at Webflyer, Djlawman (I think), and I will be meeting for drinks etc at 7PM at Dock Street Brewery, 2 Logan Square (on 18th St, between Arch & Cherry Streets, just south of the Four Seasons Hotel). Any others are more than welcome.

-------------------------------
Aug 27--

Dinner at Bookbinders if that's agreeable to all?
Catman & dgolds: What time you think you'd be in Philly on the 27th? So we can plan a time for dinner.

Aug 28--
The only thing so far for Sat that I was thinking, is a lunch cruise on the Spirit of Philadelphia on the Delaware River. I've never been on this before, but have always wanted to give it a try. I did pick up some information of things going on later Sat, but just haven't looked at them yet.

If there's any suggestions, let me know. I'll also post this on the FT thread, as some of the people interested didn't have email addresses in their profile.

EMD Jul 19, 1999 8:31 pm

People - people - please listen to me - I can't join you that weekend - I'll be there from the 19th to the 22nd - but do not, under any circumstances - go to Bookbinder's for dinner - total tourist trap!!! There is a very chic new place called Buddakan - down by the river near 2nd or 3rd - look it up - went there last month - what a great meal!!!!! And beautiful people!! For the best chicken cheesesteaks on the planet - go to Ishakabibbles on South street - somewhere between 5th and 3rd - on the north side of the street - it looks like a little hole - it is a walkup - but worth it!!

I want a solemn promise that you will not eat at Bookbinders - everyone must swear.

EMD

burkey Jul 19, 1999 8:58 pm

EMD -- which Bookbinder's are you speaking of? I'd agree that the one on South 15th is no good, I ate there once, and will not go back. But the Bookbinders on Walnut btwn 1st & 2nd was good...

doc Jul 20, 1999 12:38 pm

burkey alludes to the longstanding "Bookbinders" vs the "OLD ORIGINAL BOOKBINDERS" problem for tourists. Both expensive but one is far worse than the other!

bryan at webflyer Jul 20, 1999 2:34 pm

EMD: sorry you can't make it. If you're in town for an extra day for any reason, maybe you can meet up with us at the brewery on the 23rd.

As for Bookbinders, i can't say one way or the other. There are literally hundreds of acceptible restaurants in Philly for a gathering such as ours, so if we want to change it shouldn't be a problem. I'll leave to you, Brent.

EMD Jul 20, 1999 6:59 pm

Also - a great place to hang out for happy hour is a little place called Mace's Crossing - you can just about see it from the Four Seasons - right around the corner from Dock Street - cold beer and lots of people watching!! Have fun, kids!!!

doc Jul 21, 1999 5:41 pm

Especially on the patio, as dusk approaches. I used to live about one block away.

dgolds Jul 26, 1999 7:39 pm

So....I'm not going to be able to make it until pretty late (maybe 9 PM) on the 27th. Is anyone going to stick around then, or is the gathering going to take place on the 23rd?

I would like to book the trip to Boston soon, so want to know whether to include Philadelphia in my plans.

burkey Jul 26, 1999 8:10 pm

dgolds --

on the 23rd, it looks like MileageAddict won't be able to make it, so it'll be Bryan, Djlawman (?), and me.

for the 27th-- I never heard from Catman when he'd be in town.

Catman Jul 27, 1999 11:31 am

Burkey, I'm sending you a separate e-mail but...

Yes, I still plan to come down on the 27th...leaving late afternoon on the 28th.
Sorry I could not mention it earlier BUT I was busy with a breaking story.

Now that I have some time, I can work on hotel and airfare.

I hope you can make it too DGolds... we can make it a nice get togther.

CaptainB Jul 27, 1999 12:06 pm

went to college in Philly. Bookbinders is a little touristy, and not worth the value. For a great seafood meal, try Striped Bass on 16th and Walnut. Excellent place...

shadow Jul 27, 1999 12:08 pm

I've got a 10 AM meeting in Cranbury,NJ on the 23rd, and possibly golf in the afternoon. I will to try to make it to Dock St. that evening. Are you still planning for 7 PM? More trip details as I get them finished...

bryan at webflyer Jul 27, 1999 1:31 pm

Shadow: "Golf in the afternoon?" Is that business? Pity if it is; I'd love to play a round that Monday with you if you can, ahem "swing" it. And yes, we're still on for 7pm at the Dock Street.

burkey Jul 27, 1999 1:40 pm

Yes, as Bryan already said, things are a go for the 23rd at 7PM at Dock Street Brewery.

I've never made it to the Striped Bass yet either... so anyone coming for the eve on the 27th, any fav's?

shadow Jul 27, 1999 2:11 pm

bryan...as a matter of fact it is business, with my account that I'm meeting with in the AM. I'll need to let him 'beat up' on me, though it's not that tough since I've only played 3 rounds so far this year.

Catman Jul 27, 1999 11:41 pm

Please check August Itineraries but here are my travel plans:

27 AUG DELTA 6967 JFK-PHL 13:20-14:23
28 AUG DELTA 138 PHL-JFK 17:20-18:20

One night at the Marriott Hotel, 1201 Market Street at a "Can't beat Friday rate" which was cheaper than almost anything in NYC!

So here I come. I don't care where we go, it's the company I'm more interested in.

dgolds Jul 28, 1999 7:06 pm

Catman: Hey, are Yaz and Eddie coming?

doc Jul 29, 1999 8:56 am

Catman- You DO love those FF miles! I think it's about 90 miles each way! JFK-PHL! I guess you'll get your 1000 for the round trip plus bonuses! I used to draw the line from NYC (EWR, LAG, JFK) at Baltimore (splitting the difference between Philadelphia and Washington). I'd take the train to Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, where the hardy just walk and others grab a quick cab (which is not quite like getting a quick cab in Manhattan), except at 30th St. Station. Hope the weather is good and you are not delayed at JFK! Enjoy Philadelphia!

Catman Jul 29, 1999 12:44 pm

Yes, I do love those miles, even though the flights are on Delta (I could request credit for U-A though!) But the flight's faster than the train, and since I can't fly U-A I really can't get anything out of Amtrak (though it's good ride.)

DGolds: I don't think the cats can come because Eddie hates the dinky little planes and I don't know if the Marriott will sign in cats! http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
