Primer for Newbies

Wouldn't a tutorial be a good idea for us newbies so we wouldn't have to take board space with questions like the following:

"How can I get a listing of my own posts?"

That's not just an example...I would like an answer if someone can help. I don't find a "HELP" link so I have to ask.

(I'm not an egotist...I can't find where I posted something and am a little curious if I only dreamed it.)

I can get a list of all postings by others...just not my own.

Thanks, all!!

Chuck

Go to search and select only items posted by you.

C. Neil Aug 12, 1999 8:36 am

CW....

Thank you but that too returns 0 for 0.

(Maybe I'm dreaming this whole scenario)

shadow Aug 12, 1999 8:42 am

I think the search function has been down for awhile. Bryan, where are you???

C. Neil Aug 12, 1999 9:00 am

But, why then can I successfully find all the posts by others through both their profile and through the standard search function?

Also, searching for keywords seems to be OK now although it was 'nutty' a couple weeks ago.

How do we contact the webmaster?

bryan at webflyer Aug 12, 1999 9:10 am

I'm looking into the search feature trouble.

I like the idea of a primer of some kind--helping people with where to post (NJDavid's post on the subject being the recognized standard), how best to navigate, etc.. Maybe in the first TalkMail?

I'll post about the search feature when i know more. Thanks.

Punki Aug 12, 1999 9:18 am

I guess I can't qualify as an official newbie anymore, but I do have a question. How do you make copy BOLD in a reply?

onefreeman Aug 12, 1999 9:56 am

Punki -- it's a ubb code:

use a [

Add a "b" (no quotes)

then ]

Write your text. At the end of the part you want to bold, repeat the above only adding a "/" (no quotes) prior to the "b"...

Nice to know that even when you're 110, you're still learning! http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif (*&%$^+ brats)

Am I to presume that Bryan is our webmaster?

BRAINSTORM!!!! Perhaps some kind FT would search out my posts and E-mail me a list.

WOW....am I awake, or what?

Chuck

C. NEil: this is officially a "webmasterless" board. We webmaster by committee (on our best days).

Baze Aug 12, 1999 10:24 am

C. Neil,

I tried a search for your username and got 0 of 0 also. I did a search on my user name and got 27. I have posted more than 27. Not sure what is going on but hopefully Brian at Webflyer will find something.

NJDavid Aug 12, 1999 10:24 am

(snort......clearthroat)...what....huh? Did someone mention my name....oh, hi folks...pretending to be working as massive doses of Tylenol cold keep me in a "sleep with eyes open" state. Kids are great flu magnets....

OK...back to "work".......

Baze Aug 12, 1999 10:25 am

Oops, sorry. Bryan at webflyer

Since you brought it up .... I have a newbie question also ... how do you create the emoticons?

Thanks

geo1004 Aug 12, 1999 10:41 am

letiole: look under "faq" at the top of this page... http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

dan at WebFlyer Aug 12, 1999 11:20 am

Most "newbie" questions http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif can be answered in our FAQ link at the top of this page. We're aware of the search problem, and we're trying to get it back into working order as soon as possible. Thank you all for your patience, and for helping each other out. This is what a community is all about and you're doing (and have been doing) a great job at upholding this tradition.

Catman Aug 12, 1999 12:05 pm

Just a suggestion: IF someone has the time maybe for the new Flyertalk newsletter we can have an attachment that explains the 10 or 20 basic technical functions (like a little book) Like how to search and how to make bold type.

then we can put it with all our frequent flyer and hotel statements and have a guide to the boards.

it's alive, IT'S ALIVE!!!
muhuhuhahahaha...
Michael at WebFlyer has come to our rescue again and fixed the search feature.

C. Neil, try it now (we did, and got a listing of all your posts this time)...

Catman, that's a great suggestion; maybe we can distill the FAQ and the UBB codes pages into a small reference sheet for the more commonly used features. Since this is meant for the FT'ers, how about some of you "old-timers" giving us some suggestions for its content/layout? Until then, I'd suggest opening the FAQ in a separate window and keep it in the background while you use the boards.

it's dead, IT'S DEAD!!!
http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

looks like the search feature is back down again...

Apparently, the UBB system isn't updating the index like it _should_ be. Everytime a new post is made (like my last one), something is affecting the search/indexing functions. Michael is looking into it as I write this, so hopefully SOMEthing will work out soon. I apologize for getting everyone's hopes up...

mauld Aug 13, 1999 10:38 am

testing, testing

dan at WebFlyer Aug 13, 1999 3:20 pm

More Testing, Testing!!!

C. Neil Aug 17, 1999 7:12 pm

If that critter comes ALIVE again, will someone PLEASE get a choke-hold on it long enough to copy my post subjects and locations and e-mail them to me???

Thanks.....Chuck

dan at WebFlyer Aug 18, 1999 2:14 pm

well, it's still dead in the water.

Michael has been plugging away at it, though; he's posted news about what's going on with it at:
http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/Foru...ML/000063.html

also, he wants to remind everyone that if there's ever any problems with the board to make sure you post something in the FlyerTalk Technical Problems forum so that he'll know about it right away. Thanks for your support!

doc Aug 18, 1999 2:29 pm

Please don't take this the wrong way, but he seems pretty overwhelmed as it is right now. I posted a problem some time ago where someone else's post just vanished when I tried to respond some time ago. It turned my post into 2:08 "nothing"! There it sits since I could not even edit it to remove/delete it. Our thoughts/hopes are with him! We are a patient lot! Whenever he gets to it we'll be here! if we can help further please let us know. Thanks again.

How do you make cute little cat faces? The rest can wait!
