7:00pm: Claypot dinner - claypot is a cooking style using clay earthenware cooking pots. It is a local favourite in the winter. Famous is the lamb/goat/mutton stew as well as rice cooked in the pot with toppings. It is meant to add warmth to the cold winter days. Rice cooked in claypots will absorb the flavour of the topping as well as a crispy crust at the bottom.
For the adventurous snake soup is another winter delicacy.

On Thursday, seems like there is consensus for an excursion to Macau (also cool), but I will have jumped the gun and just come back from there, so again, meeting up in the evening for hot pot seems like the plan for me. I am more than happy to check out some microbrews while I wait for the crew to return ... and if in the end no one makes it back in time for dinner at least I'll be well situated to drown my loneliness.

Any suggestions on a traveller's SIM card? I know if I were flying to SIN first there's one I could get that would cover a good portion of Asia for 10 days, but starting in TPE or even HKG I am not sure if there is the same thing on offer.
Microbrew sampling before hot pot would be good. Let see what the number is and I will make arrangements.

There will be a claypot dinner on 15th as well for the ones who are in HK and interested.

I've copied the current agenda/attendees into a thread wiki.

If not I can make arrangement for the Macao visit for those who wants to go with the Casino discount package.
Is the casino package similar to Atlantic City junkets where for some fixed price you get RT transportation plus a voucher for a nominal amount of gambling chips, sort of thing?

The first race starts at 7:15PM at Happy Valley so a before dinner may be tight. I plan to just go the and make dinner a hot dog and a pitcher of Tsingtao. All are welcome to join for that!

For SIM card I will be on Google Fi so I am covered there. Not sure on other options.

I'm definitely in for claypot on the 15th; Horse races and predinner on the 16th; and day trip to Macau on the 17th, and hotpot dinner back in Hong Kong that night.

Tentseller, can you share information on the Casino discount package? What it includes, cost, etc.?

Thanks and looking forward to the adventure.

I will get information for the single day subsidized Macao excursion and post them for those who are interested.

I won't be doing the Macao trip so I am game to do microbrew with anyone who is interested before hot potting.

Claypot dinner Jan 15th will be around Sheung Wan / Sai Ying Poon.

If everyone wants to be there for the first race we can do dinner afterwards. Just need to leave before the last race or it gets pretty crowded exiting. There are many afternoon tea options to get a bit of quick food before the first race nearby.

The place I have in mind for post race dinner is near Happy Valley.

Since there is interest in a Macao day trip Jan 17, I should plan the hot pot near Shun Tak Centre where the ferry from Macao docks?

Post race dinner and pre-hot pot brews sound great to me!!

I might be around for dinner on the 15th, depends on how/when I get back from Macau - I should have an idea by the 14th.

Long time lurker, frequent flyer and unicorn poster... I'm in for the HKG / SIN Do! (not BKK)

I arrive into HKG on the afternoon of 1/15 departing on the 10:55 am Scoot flight to SIN on 1/18. Staying in SIN 1/18 - 1/20. Sorting out accommodations now... Count me in for all events.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Is anyone else planning on Ngong Ping/Buddha on the the 16th? (If not that's ok too )

FWIW I just booked this on Klook:

Ngong Ping 360 & Tai O Pass https://www.klook.com/activity/680

(I paid what is probably the tourist/sucker upgrade to the crystal cabin because some of the reviews said the lines can be shorter that way, though dunno how much of an issue that will be mid week)

Yes line is shorter and you get the glass floor which give you some interesting drone like aerial views.

Hmm, I'm not currently a WhatsApp user -- Facebook messenger, SMS, or LINE, or my usual m.o. would be to post updates in the thread and monitor it regularly on the ground.

But if I'm in the minority I could succumb to peer pressure and finally sign up...

WhatsApp or SMS would be preferred. I don't have LINE, but can Messenger instead if that's the most popular option.

Macao Casino Junkets

These are crossing by ferries only.
For those who wants to try the bus crossing you need to DIY the trip. There is another post about the bus crossing on the bridge.

If you guys are game to do the ferry Klook.com is a good place to get return ferry discounts. (Same goes for airport pick up local SIMs)
