I would be happy to lead a pre-DO/transit program for those who may want to be in SIN the day/night before heading to KUL.
|
Guys, this is not SIN Do. It should be but it isn't. If it moves it is something entirely different than the even I started in 2002 and which has run non-stop for 14 years.
There is no other international Do with greater longevity. Make the KUL thing a side trip or in the spirit of collocated airports (JFK-LGA-EWR, etc) perhaps call it SIN Do does KUL or something but for the sake of the Do I started so long ago lets keep this as what it is. |

I didn't mean to DO-Jack😊 but I'm interested in SIN, KUL, whatever. Hell, we may as well throw Bali in there, too. Kidding😉 |

Jetstar has a red eye departing SIN, and return from DPS around midnight, so it's actually possible to do a day trip. Hire a car/driver in advance, and do a trip in southern Bali including temples, beaches, local food, and drinks.
Hmm, now you've got me thinking. That's for the tip.😀 |
I added some details regarding hotels. I strongly recommend booking one in the CBD/Golden Triangle area which is closes to the Petronas Towers.
The post DO destination will be added in June and the event timeline will be added in mid May. |

I agree. I love SIN.
Glad to go to new and different. |
A move to KUL given its proximity makes a world of sense, but to do that to the exclusion of SIN diminishes the event and its history. Many flyers have visited and although the faces have changed (and some the same bless you) I think for this year, the 15th anniversary, it needs to be SIN Do and maybe amend the title to read:
"SIN Do meets KUL" or something. Rendezvous in SIN and then go ground or cheap local flight to KUL but keep the SIN component. It is the longest running international Do and perhaps the longest running full stop. Lets keep the FT tradition alive and add adventure without losing the history. |
For those in favor of a SIN Do, I think nobody is against a SIN Do, but it takes volunteers to organize one.
Thanks to those who have stepped up and are organizing a KUL Do in 2016. By labeling this as the "Relocated SIN Do", they are likely to get greater attendance. Throw in greater affordability and you got a party (some of the great hotel deals have already been mentioned.) Either way, I'm grateful for anyone organizing a Do, independent of location. Having said that, personally, I would have probably not attended a SIN Do in 2016. Who knows, maybe going forward this will turn into the SE Asia Do that moves every year. |
Having the post DO or a pre DO in SIN would be great and help to preserve the tradition

It also takes a variety of new events and experiences to keep the DO interesting and to keep new people coming and give repeat attendees a reason to return. For example, visiting SQ was a first time event in 2014, visiting SATs was a first time event in 2012, and there have been 5 different cities visited for post DOs from 2011-2015. So if someone would like to volunteer to help wit this DO, PM me. You can implement your "armchair suggestions", otherwise I would kindly ask that you clean up your posts. A lot of consideration went into planning the change for 2016 with many repeat attendees who participate in events asked for their thoughts. |

I personally have zero interest in returning to SIN, regardless of the "tradition" and "history". Those that do should probably start their own thread and go from there.
|
This thread is about the KUL Do 2016.
It is very clear that there are those who are longing for a SIN Do. This is not the thread to discuss a SIN Do. The CommunityBuzz mods have deleted a number of off topic posts as a result. Please stay on topic, that of KUL Do 2016, the title has also been corrected to better reflect the subject of this thread. Thank you, Willie & the mods of CommunityBuzz |

Thinking about booking the panoramic suite the TreeTree. It is pretty cheap.
|
For those staying in the Hyatt, the hotel can organise airport pickups. If enough people are arriving at the same time, they even have access to a 40 seater coach!
|
I'm in for DO and Post DO. I am really looking forward to it. Tickets booked… Now off to figure out hotel.
|
Well phooey, a conflict has arisen. I'm out. Maybe next time!
|
Put me in as interested
|
I'm going to start putting together a list of confirmed and tentative people starting May 1. I'll be going through the thread for replies and if you aren't listed, please PM me so I can update my list.
|
Put me down for the Do. An "old hand" with KUL and can perhaps help as needed. Probably stay IC or Hilton (or both). Like Violist, likely to be in and out via SIN.

Post-Do Destination Has Been Selected!
I'm pleased to announce that the 2016 Post-Do will take place January 18-20 in Sihanoukville, Cambodia! Further details will be announced as they are confirmed.

There are a couple of ways to do it. You can fly KUL-REP-KOS (Sihanoukville), though the Angkor Air flight to KOS departs only three times weekly. Or, you can fly KUL-PNH and take a taxi (~$90) or Giant Ibis mini bus service ($10).
Air Asia seems to charge $42 for KUL-PNH including carry-on and 1 checked bag. MYR. Malaysia Airlines is $20 more - also available with Avios. |

Yeah, it looks like you'd have to do two tickets. Both tickets would be inexpensive, but I'd be a little nervous about the possibility of a missed connection, since there are only three flights per week from REP-KOS.

Cambodia Angkor Air will also be flying the PNH-KOS route shortly, however I suspect a taxi will be the best option since any time saved on a plane will be spent transferring flights in PNH. |

Correct, you'd have to do two separate tickets, but it is certainly an option. That said, as Kuldo_2016 noted, the preferred way to do this will be to fly KUL-PNH and taxi to Sihanoukville. With 2-4 folks sharing each taxi, the cost will be reasonable, and by most accounts, it's a fun and interesting drive.
Regarding Sihanoukville hotels, please hold off on booking anything so we can figure out a good one for the group. If you have suggestions for them though, please PM me. It will be strange to have a post DO in a city without a major hotel chain this time. For other details, I'm going to put up a preliminary attendee list this weekend. The organizers will also be working on a dining and event schedule outline in the next few weeks. |
