ANC June 8 mini-do

It appears that the stars are aligning for several MR visitors on Saturday, June 8. Doc Savage, GoAmtrak, ParanoiaTX, & Mackieman are taking advantage of VA & UA fares to make a MR to ANC. Rather than sit in some stuffy restaurant (there is nothing wrong with that most of the time) I have offered to host a dinner at Casa de Bob W. Beckoa should be around by 8.

Anyone else interested in joining us?

Attending so far:

Doc Savage
GoAmtrak
ParanoiaTX
Mackieman
Bob W
Beckoa
ANC RED-EYE
Jazon256
AKronin

Mackieman May 31, 2013 6:54 am

Very much looking forward to this.

Doc Savage May 31, 2013 8:48 am

Sounds great, will see you guys next week.^

Just let me know what to bring.;)

beckoa May 31, 2013 11:35 pm

This should be fun ;)

Hope we get less WX excitement then our last event...

jackal May 31, 2013 11:52 pm

Wish I could be there...

ANC RED-EYE Jun 1, 2013 12:41 am

I would suggest that you drive really, really, really fast and get here so we do not have to make that call. Texans are known to be trouble makers with just a little assistance from the locals.:D

So what should we bring?

I will have Beckoa grill some Bourbon basted Salmon & Tri-tip along with a garden salad. Bring some other side and whatever you want to drink. I have lots of wine & and assortment of sodas but very little beer;).

Post what you are bringing & others can fill in even more.

Beck usually brings some tasty stuff from Costco.

As an idea for the food... we have a wiki on top- can edit that so we know who is bringing what. :D

:-: Drink the wine. Bring some real nice dessert. :-:

Just a bit of advice for newcomers to the Wall o' Wine from one who has been there quite a few times and is now even more seriously unhappy about missing this party. :(

Ok, I'll make some mashed potatoes if you've got a large pot I can borrow.

Doc Savage Jun 4, 2013 3:16 pm

Looking forward to it guys.

P.S. The weather has been cooperative in Ketchikan and Juneau so far!

Ooo I do like some Tator's. And there should be a decent size pot for use.

Excellent. Did you make it to the Alaskan Brewing Company in JNU? Great samples there. I'd take the bus or a taxi as you may not want to drive after.

P.S. I'm likin' this wiki thing

Make it local beer. Heck, if you are around Saturday afternoon, The Midnight Sun Brewing Company is less than a mile from my house with several to choose from. Definitely worth a visit.

Great Alaska Brewing Company? I had no idea and will have to go next time I'm there. Or are you thinking of Midnight Sun? (They have good food, too.)

If I'm coming from downtown on foot, where would you recommend for to-go beer/wine and a gourmet side or dessert?

You'll want a cab or a ride to Bob's from downtown. It's a good 7 miles or so. :)

You could take PeopleMover bus routes 1 or 2 down Lake Otis to 80th, but with bus service at best every hour and taking almost an hour to do what would be a 15-20-minute drive, that's not a terribly useful method of traveling around ANC. ;)

You are correct, it is Midnight Sun Brewing Co. :o

The People Mover bus system can get you around fairly well and there is a stop at Lake Otis & 80th, a half mile from my house. Both Carr's Quality Centers & Fred Meyer are less than a mile from here and the busses go by both, but I don't know their schedule.

And if you're looking at cabbing it, it's probably $25 each way to and from downtown and/or the airport. If you're already going to be downtown, I can get $41 for a compact car from an off-airport location for the day of 6/8), and if you want to rent at the airport, it's a little over $50--both competitive with the cost of cabs.

Perfect, looks like the bus from downtown would get me there by 7:30.

All I'll be renting is a bicycle downtown. :) Also, as a non-car-owner who always has to add SLI coverage to the rental, the math is less favorable for me. Still appreciate the suggestion, though. ^

I'm sure any or all of us flying out can share a cab back to ANC if needed.

On it! I'll bring beer and something sweet.

Mackieman Jun 5, 2013 8:29 am

ParanoiaTX and I will have a car and can give rides. We're staying at the Sheraton and plan on going to see some stuff during the day, though.

Jazon256 Jun 5, 2013 9:12 pm

Looks like I should be able to make it after all, though I have a red eye to SFO that night for a conference, so I won't be able to stay too late.

And I'd be happy to bring beer from my kegorator if desired, currently have the excellent Alaskan Summer Ale on tap :)

Most of the group are on redeyes about the same time you are.

Glad you can make it. Some kind of snack for after dinner fire pit relaxation would be good.

Well we wouldn't want the beer to go flat while you're out of state :D

This is turning into quite the event

And thanks for updating the wiki- I'm liking that feature more and more ^

I'm trying to page AKronin to help with the smoky atmosphere around the pit... :D

I can probably help out with that. ;)

Count me in! Anything else still lacking from the menu?

GoAmtrak Jun 6, 2013 9:54 pm

If any ANC folks would like to join the "afterparty" on UA525 ANC-SFO, both cabins are wide open and the $99 N fare is in effect. :D

I would be happy to turn over salad duties to AKronin. I'll do some steamed veggies.

Wiki edited....................

beckoa, if you join them, I'll even donate an RPU to the cause if it'll make you quit talking about how much UA sucks even though you've never flown them. :p
