Get-together for a BAC 1-11 ride?
I'm not sure how many of you are old enough to be nostalgic for the One-Eleven, but Classic Jet Tours has an 'enthusiast charter' planned for August 27 from Dallas. It's certainly a "rare bird" with only 8 in service.

I guess I'll show my age here by saying that I would love to do this. My BAC One-Eleven experiences have been in inter-island service in Hawaii on AQ back in the day. The only other plane that reminds me of the One-Eleven and still in service is the Fokker F-100. I'll look up the site for more information. This sounds like a great get-together. :)

I was fortunate to log over 40 flights aboard BAC-111s from Allegheny, Pacific Express, Florida Express and Cayman Airways. What a great little airplane! I wish I could join you down at DAL but I'll have family in town for that weekend. Have a great flight!

My first flight ever was on a Dan-Air 1-11 and I had a cockpit visit whilst in cruise.

The plane is as old as I am, flew on them with Mohawk and Allegheny.

I actually flew in first class on a BAC One-Eleven. The carrier was Braniff (BN) and the routing was LIT-FSM-TUL-DAL. I was traveling on a 50% "Youth Fare" (remember them?) and I was bumped up into F in LIT as Y was full (I had originated in MEM).
The years flew by and I found myself flying on the One-Eleven once again via several trips on Pacific Express. Routings were SBA-BFL-SFO, SFO-SBA, PSP-LAX and several other flights within California as well.... I always enjoyed the distinctive sounds of the Rolls Royce engines on that neat little British twin jet..... |

When I was a teen, I would fly Mohawk's 111's and FH 227's, on the Unlimited Weekends, like for $36.67. I think one weekend I hit 24 flights on these two planes, and a few commuter aircraft. Like $1.50 per flight.
US/Allegheny got like 12 additional 111's after the Mohawk merger from Braniff, and Braniff took US's two 727-200s. I would like to fly the 111 again if I had the time and access from Florida. |
BAC111 memories
My first BAC 111 flight was from Glasgow to London. I think the carrier was British United. I remember clearly how quiet it was compared with the Vickers Viscounts and Vanguards I was used to. It was special because they were experimenting with backward facing seats. Take off was a bit hairy because one was pushed forward held only by the seat strap.
Later I regularly flew in British Airways 111's between Aberdeen and London. I loved them so much I still remember their registrations 40 years later. BB-MG and BB-MF. One day when having my lunch at Aberdeen airport, I was surprised to see MG returning shortly after having taken off for London. Apparently he could not get his wheels up! The next day, I took off for London in MG. Within minutes, I was startled to see the sea rather too close below us. The reason quickly became clear when MG returned to the airport because once again, he could not get his legs up. From then on, he was known as "Naughty MG" |

From then on, he was known as "Naughty MG" One of Braniff International's BAC 1-11s did double duty for the airline, not only flying regularly scheduled revenue passenger flights but also serving as a corporate jet for the carrier. It even had a name: "Little Precious". LIAT (Leeward Island Air Transport) also operated the BAC 1-11 in the Caribbean for a time, which nearly broke the airline (the aircraft was too big for their typical interisland routes). BTW, LIAT, which is still in operation with Dash 8-300 aircraft, has two nicknames: "Leave Island Any Time" and "Luggage In Another Terminal". I've flown with them and they are an interesting carrier! Back around this same time, an oil & gas company in Houston (which I believe was Tenneco) had several BAC 1-11s in their corporate fleet based at Houston Hobby (HOU). When I was in high school in the late 60's, we walked into their hangar unannounced and received an impromptu tour of the 1-11. Not much security back in those good old days and how the world has changed.... And much more recently (last May), I did see a corporate BAC One-Eleven parked on the west side of Dallas Love Field (DAL). |
