Which dates would you prefer to attend the Austin Mega Do 2?

We are coming up on a year away from the next Austin Mega Do and we have narrowed it down to two possible dates. If you would like to come, please indicate your choice of dates in the attached poll.

You know I'll try like heck to get their either date!

We do have regular commercial air service, you know. ;)

paranoiatx Apr 13, 2011 11:36 am

So I voted, but really, given I only have to drive a few miles, it probably doesn't matter much.

tommy777 Apr 13, 2011 4:09 pm

Just as an FYI, the Frequent Traveler Awards will be held on April 26th next year, so I hope you pick the week before. :)

LOL. I won't be picking...or voting, unless it's a tie in both polls. :) If that happens, then I will have quite a dilemma on my hands.

I think both events will be packed, I was just thinking about my own calendar (I obviosly have to attend the awards :P) as I really LOVED what you put on last year and really want to attend again next year ;)

Ditto. I still salivate when I think about last year's food.

Showcasing Austin is always nice to do.

+1

With the middle April date, taxes will be over with, good reason to celebrate or drown your sorrows. Also late April is glorious in many places in the US so I'd really rather not be in Austin then.

bradj Apr 13, 2011 7:40 pm

I'm a bit of a new FT'er and I've seen the Do threads before but I'm not sure exactly what goes on at these. Since I live in Austin I'm thinking it might be neat to check it out. What typically goes on at this event as it appears to be multiday?

Thanks!

It's the best time to visit Texas wine country - good scenery and great alcohol!

There will be a myriad of events and activities, including lots of BBQ from around the region and some other Texas staples. The exact itinerary is still in flux due to the event being about a year away still, but everything will be announced in due time. Suffice it to say that it's a great opportunity to get together with other folks from FlyerTalk (and MilePoint) and have a good time. :)

SkiAdcock Apr 14, 2011 9:05 am

Well I'm at a trade show in LAS the first dates so I'm hoping for the 2nd, but that of course would mean missing the FT Awards. However, that might be a sacrifice I have to make in order to attend the Austin Do, of which I heard so many fabulous things.

If by chance the first week wins out (like it looks like it will from the poll so far), I'll have to think about doing two separate tickets - the biz trip to LAS & then a separate ticket to AUS, and fly down on Thurs after the show ends.

Cheers.

I've done that very thing for work. And this event will be worth it. :)

Gratuitous bump to get back to the first page.

It seems the first date is running away with the vote, however.

Here's last year's thread, which should give you an idea:

It probably doesn't make a lick of a difference, but I need to change my vote to 4/26. It looks like my 10yr college reunion will be on the first weekend and I'll probably want to fly out to that. If the events collide, maybe I'll just disappear for a day in the middle.

Richard Chen Apr 19, 2011 12:48 am

I chime in with paranoiatx but because Apr 26 is my birthday which my company requires I take off.

Will try my darndest to make most of it either way.

chemist661 Apr 19, 2011 7:17 am

Either set of dates is fine for me.

Since I lived in Austin from 1980-86, I need to go & will go!

Just having yummy Texas BBQ makes it worth it, sorry I missed events in year's past.

Starwood Lurker Apr 20, 2011 11:21 am

Thanks to everyone who has voted so far. Even with amended votes, the first date seems to be winning out at about 70% vs. 30% in both polls. There is still time for that to change, however. ;)

For those who are interested, here is a list of the BBQ establishments we are planning to visit during Austin Mega Do 2:

Franklin BBQ

Luling City Market

Snow's BBQ

Salt Lick

Just one per day this time around, though. :D LOL

Mmmmmm Ken's Taco's I didn't know anyone else knew of that place. I guess with *wood offices being right around the corner though..

Looks like last year you guys went to some great places. I look forward to being able to make a few of the events next year.

ac777 Apr 21, 2011 3:58 pm

William, I agree-- one BBQ/day is quite enough!! At present am really interested but April 2012 is a loooong ways away!!

SFOTerry Apr 21, 2011 4:58 pm

one BBQ/day is not nearly enough! :D

Bundy Bear Apr 21, 2011 9:35 pm

I should read the complete thread before casting my vote.

I voted for the later weekend as I have an extra long weekend in those dates where I could possibility attend.

Sounds like the previous weekend then, with April 26 for the Frequent Traveler Awards, where will they be held.

Yes, Ken's is in one direction...Taco Shack in the other. We are truly blessed when it comes to breakfast taco establishments. :)

Torchy's is absolutely worth the drive, but for lunch... :)

Black's BBQ in Lockhart

I was thinking about you guys when I saw this great Eversave deal for Black's BBQ in Lockhart. In the process of sharing my find, I found this thread. If you can't wait another year to enjoy some Texas BBQ, here's the deal. $10 for $20 of BBQ through midnight tonight. If you have an Eversave account, they just sent out a $10 save reward which makes it FREE! You can't beat that! If you don't have an account, when you sign up you get a $4 credit, so $6 for $20 of BBQ, still not a bad deal!

boxo Apr 27, 2011 10:27 pm

One per day? Sounds great. Last year was too much good stuff stuffed into so little time I hardly remember it.

I imagine the weather will be warmer in April than it is in February. Not complaining at all 'cause I don't mind bundling up.

This is penciled into my calendar.

No need to bundle up in April. While it has been unseasonably warm this month, we have already had a high in the upper 90's this week!

Great idea! If it's this warm next year, a dip at Barton Springs may need to be on the agenda.

Barton Springs would beat the lake HANDS DOWN any day of the week. Close, convenient, cool, clean, lots of space...

My guess is that you are speaking in terms of a swimming experience only? If so, then I would tend to agree, but other than this, I find the Zilker Park experience to be a bit flat as compared to Lake Travis.

This year, however, we are working on getting a party barge for a Saturday afternoon at Lake Travis. We are hoping to move along the lake to some areas that folks can fish or swim, as they see fit. Maybe not all at the same time, mind you. ;)

We will probably follow that up with watching the sunset, eating some BBQ, and drinking some microbrews at Uncle Billy's Brew & Que on the Lake. If we do, that will be our second BBQ venue in one day. :D

LOL. Well, my first suggestion was to go next door to The Oasis Bar & Grill just to have drinks and watch the sunset from their magnificent decks overlooking Lake Travis.

But, at our BBQ Thursday luncheon yesterday, it was pointed out that Uncle Billy's has the same fine view and BBQ to boot. So, since some voters were asking to do two-a-days on BBQ, it seemed like a fine suggestion to move the venue a few hundred feet or so.
