Citi AA cards: General discussion and PUBLIC online offers (2019-2020)

I finally pulled the trigger last night on a 60K offer. Unfortunately it looks like I still can't log into my new Citi account. Is this normal since I haven't gotten the card yet?

(Also, I was hoping that I'd get an instant card number on approval but that didn't happen either.)

victoras Jan 1, 2019 6:15 pm

Regarding the online offer for 40,000 (or matched to 60,000) miles with $250 statement credit for AA Personal Platinum that people have mentioned, I can't figure out if I am eligible. I currently have an AA Platinum card that was opened > 24 months ago. Can I apply for and receive a second AA card of the exact same type under my name? (I wouldn't want to cancel the first card until I've applied for the second to not mess up the bonus if I'm understanding things correctly)

And would I be ineligible for the 250 dollar credit since it states "new credit cardmembers"?

Sorry if these are simple questions; I'm just confused on some of the terms....

From what I have read from on here, you should be elligible for the mileage bonus since your account age is greater than 24 months. You can open multiple of the same card types. Regarding the credit, I'm not sure.

Citi does not give instant card number.

You will need to ACTIVATEA the new card before you can add it to an existing citi online account. Dont know what "new citi account" you have created - I suppose it is one of the screens ask if you want to get online access... Should not do that because it often creates complication when you actually receive the card, activated it, then you have trouble to "add" it to the "new account" you created.

Wait till you receive the physical card, call to activate it (it is automatic system, but sometimes if you activate it online, system would flag for security block without you even know it - happened on me when I returned to Citi after a long period. Call from the telephone number used on your application to activate the card seems to avoid this potential mess.
Once the card is activated, see if you can link it to the "new account" you have created. If you encounter issue, abandon that "new account" and start the registration anew - but unfortunately you will not be able to use the same userid that has used to create the "new account".

It is the lousy Citi IT that has all sorts of quirks that you just need to learn and deal with them.

Per DoC, it's a possibility for the AA cards. That said, I have no idea what criteria's used to trigger it, assuming it's still possible. And it's not the end of the world to have to wait, either, though it would have been nice to be able to add it to my mobile wallet and begin working towards minimum spend right away.

Yep, it was part of the screen that let me do balance transfers (if desired), among other options. Since it's my first Citi card, I had no existing account to link it to.

Anyway, that username/password is currently giving me a "unable to process your request at this time" message. I'll wait and see what happens when I get the physical card, I suppose.

I think it has something to do with applying for the card when you are booking a ticket. If you start to book a ticket, before you click the button to submit, there will almost always be a credit card offer. If you sign up for those, I believe you get an instant number. When I had my mom sign up that way a couple years ago, she got an instant number we used for the purchase. I was looking just the other day at one of those offers and I remember reading something about being able to use a portion of the credit immediately.

To update, the website login finally worked without errors...but it's asking me for information from the back of the card that I haven't received yet. Seems like there's a chance that I won't need to re-create the account when I finally activate the card. ^

You might want to read that DoC post more carefully as well as the comments. It is three years old and I don't see any indication of anyone actually getting a virtual account number, only that a Rep said that it was possible. In the comments, someone claims that you can only get one if you have an existing Citi bank account or credit card account. However, they were unable to actually get one. Other comments note:

December 18,2017:
Data point for Citi cards, specifically the Diamond Preferred: I was approved for it and was given an instant TEMPORARY account number, expiration, and 3 code to use until the card arrived, but only 10% of the credit limit.

Not sure what a 'Diamond Preferred' card is/was but note you could only use 10% of CL.

June 27, 2018:

Report a DP: Asked and get a Temporary Credit Card Information for newly approved Citi AAdvantage Select Platinum Credit Card through a phone call. The representative said the number will expire after once use and can only be used towards airline ticket purchase. Would confirm if its true later.
Restricted to airline purchases, no follow-up as to whether or not it worked.

Personally, I have never heard of anyone getting a virtual account before on a Citi AAdvantage Platinum card.

This is only tangentially related to this thread but has anyone had success unlinking all these closed accounts from your login? It always errors out online, but I'm wondering if calling in proved successful. Don't really want to waste 20 min on the phone if its hopeless.

I generally don't have a problem unlinking closed accounts online. Occasionally, yes, but usually it works.

Hmm, must be some Citi IT glitch on my end from the citigold fiasco years ago.

I have glitches with Citi IT way more than any other institution. This is just an example of how the glitches can be random from one person to the next.

To unlink successfully, you have to make sure that your closed account is not the primary account. And calling in to IT would be a waste of time since they would just issue a trouble shooting ticket that goes no where.

VegasGambler Jan 4, 2019 12:02 am

How long does it take to actually get one of these cards in your hands? I applied and was instantly approved on 12/25. I understand that the holidays can make things slow, but... I got the approval letter (with the cash advance pin) on Dec 31. Still no card...

Luckily AA views me as a cardholder so I was able to book award travel and get my 10k mile rebate on 12/30.

The website used to be more intuitive, but I can no longer figure out how to change the primary account. Fortunately, chat agents can update your primary account in a matter of seconds, and then you can unlink the old accounts.

Yup, I called in and made my new-ish Citi Premier card my primary online account wise (a keeper card) and it has been well worth it get that established for easy AA adding/removing purposes.

Under the "Profiles" menu in the upper right on the website go to "More Settings", it is right there under "default credit cards". Make a card you want to keep the default, then you can unlink all the others.

GH83 Jan 4, 2019 9:02 am

Well, that was easier than I thought! I believe there used to be a link to it right on the main accounts page.

I'm averaging about 10 days from approval to arrival, but it can vary a little depending on where in the country you are. For a long time, I always got the card the day after I got the approval letter, but recently there's sometimes been a longer gap between the two.

Yeah, it finally arrived today. So that's 10 days, including a holiday.

Activated, linked, and requested a match to 75k miles through SM (offer was 50+10). I actually tried to go through chat but there were no available agents. I'm not sure why they want to move everything from SM to chat if they don't have agents ready to chat 24/7.

It's already linked to Plastiq and I'm going to give it a try for rent this month.

Opinions needed. Opened a Citi Biz AA card as I was short of miles for a family trip. Hurried up and met the min spend prior to first statement closing and bonus miles posted. One of the purchases on first statement was large for Expedia (hotel corresponding to said family trip) and was what pushed me over the min spend threshold on statement 1. Cashed in the award miles for flights.

Fast forward and I am on statement period three, and I'd like to cancel that Expedia res as I've found a better deal elsewhere. Would this put my AA account miles balance in jeopardy, and or ticketed flight in jeopardy? I'll have spent the min $5K either way within first three months as required, but probably looks like I gamed the system to get the miles to post earlier. I'm not sure if Citi cares about this timing issue, or what they would most likely do about it?

We've never had any reports of anybody getting in trouble for a return/refund of any sort (although the strong consensus is that you definitely shouldn't let returns permanently put you under the min spend). As long as you do have over $5k worth of non-refunded purchases when all is said and done, you should be fine. Citi doesn't care when you get the miles - the timing issue is a non-issue.

I agree with bobert24,no previous reports on a claw-back of miles in similar situations, it doesn't mean it wouldn't happen to you though, but i would put the new purchase that will replace the Expedia one on the same card so your card doesn't go negative overall and may be this won't show a red flag with citi.

Thanks bobert24 and ninim2200, I don't hang around here as much as I used to, but recall your input as helpful in the glory days of the Citi Exec 100K churning. Same here, appreciate it.

Thanks Mia - I did read through the wiki.

The closest reference was "you can always send Citi a secure message through your online account to confirm your bonus amount and deadline. (You must first activate the card and set up online access, either by creating an online account or by linking your new card to your existing online account. "

However, I have activated and linked my new AA card, and Secure Message can only read messages (of which I don't have any).

No you did not. Please read the wiki in the thread mia gave you the link to. There is no need to read and quote from an entirely different wiki.

Or, you could just read some previous posts in the current thread (not the wiki) before posting in it.

You will not be able to use the AA card with Google Pay:

https://www.citi.com/credit-cards/cr...iti-google-pay

Which Citi cards are eligible to use with Google Pay?

All Citi branded consumer credit and debit cards issued in the US are eligible for Google Pay, except for ATM cards, American Express cards, and CitiŽ / AAdvantageŽ cards. Citi branded business cards are not eligible for Google Pay, except for US issued Costco Anywhere VisaŽ Business cards.

Weird how it's supported on Apple Pay but not Google Pay. Fortunately I do have an iPhone floating around but not sure if it's worth bothering with when the card probably won't be used beyond the minimum spend.

That makes sense. I've only had this card in my possession for a few days (applied and approved 2 weeks ago)

I guess my concern is that if the bonus miles post they may be unable to modify it or something. I really have no idea what's going on on their end. I sent an SM, and got a pop-up saying that they would reply within 4 hrs. That was late Friday night. I'm not sure if they work weekends though. If I don't hear anything by Monday I'll try chat.

When you request a match Citi does not modify your offer. They add the extra points separately, as a courtesy.

Correct. The terms mean only that you cannot apply an advertised bonus to a card account that is already open, you must apply for a new account.

VegasGambler Jan 7, 2019 12:03 pm

No response to secure message asking for match. I tried chat and was asked to contact the "rewards management team" to determine eligibility for match.

Here is the direct phone number to contact our rewards management team: 1-800-950-5114 (TTY/TDD: 1-800-325-2865). Please note, this department is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

mia Jan 7, 2019 12:07 pm

If you can post the exact text of your request others may be able to tell you if you used a term that might trigger this response.

In chat, I wrote

Hi, I recently activated my card ending in xxxx. I see there is a 75000 mile signup offer available. Can you please match my account to this offer? Thank you!
My SM was identical, except the word "recently" is replaced with "just"

These days there is rarely any response to secure messages, except you may get a letter by mail. (A few people get e-mail replies.) Actions like CL adjustment or account closure can be seen on your account page as soon as they happen, but you may have to wait to see if they have put the "match" through.

Also, it is not wise to ask to be matched to an offer, since it can sometimes be misinterpreted as a request to change the applicable offer post facto (not possible). Instead claim that the mythical offer exists, and ask if they will give you the difference of xxx miles 'as a courtesy'.

VegasGambler Jan 7, 2019 12:35 pm

Oh I see. Thank you!

I figure, no harm, no foul on the chat. I just won't call. I'll wait a week to see if I get anything in the mail, and, if not, I'll try again with the "courtesy" language.

I'm not going to call. I think it's the wrong department, as someone here suggested. I'm going to request again using the "as a courtesy" language that was recommended here.

tmiw Jan 7, 2019 8:18 pm

I received my card today and asked via SM for a match to 75K (originally signed up for the 60K/$4K offer). We'll see how that goes.

Also, as expected, I get a "added features couldn't be set up" error attempting to add it to Google Pay (weirdly, after the Citi T&C came up and were approved). Samsung Pay via my Gear S3, however, did add it after calling into Citi, which is weird since I thought I remembered seeing something on their site claiming that Samsung Pay wasn't supported either.
