Choice Privileges - Elite level status question
I realize that Choice Privileges' Rules & Regs state "You must qualify for Elite level status each calendar year."
So this may be a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway just to be sure. (I didn't have any luck doing a search on this in FT.) Whenever a new status level is achieved, is that level active only until December 31st of the current calendar year?
In other words, does everyone start over on January 1st with no status yet for the new year (except for Choice Barclaycard Visa cardholders who automatically have Elite Gold status)? If 'yes', that seems a bit strange to me but maybe that is typical for hotel programs?
Sorry, I'm a newbie to hotel elite level status. Thanks in advance for any help on this.

No. Call the year that you earn status in ' year 1'. Whenever you earn status you will be elite for the remainder of year 1 and all of year 2. If you earn status in year 2 you will also have that status for year 3. If you do not earn status in year 2, then you will not have status in year 3 until you earn it in year 3. At the beginning of year 2, your counter goes back to 0 and to get it in year 3, you must earn it in year 2
All hotels programs work this way in earning and keeping for the following year. Some programs, such as Marriott, will roll over excess nights from yer 1 into year 2. Choice does not.

Plus for Gold status, and Gold status only, there are two other ways to qualify besides on stays:
1. Holding a Barclay Choice Privileges Visa Signature card automatically gives you Gold status as long as you hold it (as you mentioned already).
2. Having earned 1 million points since you joined Choice Privileges gives you lifetime Gold status.
Having said that, Choice Privileges Gold status is better than a poke in the eye, but it only extends your domestic award booking window, not the international one which is what many most care about. To extend the international booking window you have to be at least Platinum status.
Also, at Choice, reward stays count toward elite status. (They count at some programs but not at others.)
Finally, to your original question: Yes, it's to the end of the 2nd year, but AFAIK not a moment later. While some other programs give you status to the end of the 2nd year and then a few months into your 3rd year (so that they have time to sort out what your new status will be that year). Choice prefers to make a mistake on your status for a few days (in case your stays from late December haven't posted yet and they'll make a difference in your status level for the following year), and change your status once on Jan 1 and then change it again days later if need be.
