There's a Dadong near JA Temple (in Reel Plaza), and a bunch of Quanjude branches scattered about.

Search smartshanghai using "Peking Duck" for more info.

Hard to believe they didn't like Made in China!

I just was there and it was excellent. That said, the menu is rather difficult to navigate so perhaps challenges in ordering led to a suboptimal experience. (I think we counted 3 separate "appetizer" sections - one on the Chef's menu, one of the chef's specials, and one on the normal menu.)

Have to say, my last visit to MIC (late September) was well below par. It was still fine, but not great...and the prices just keep creeping up. Am reluctant to return tbh. I'm keen to try the duck at the new place in Opposite House. I've had other things on the menu, but not the duck yet.

I did not read the whole 14 pages of this thread but near Made in China and in the same price range, I found Duck de Chine to be excellent and it is a much nicer place.

I will be visiting Shanghai and Guangzhou in the next week. Any recommended places to have some duck in these cities?

I've never had duck in Shanghai or Guangzhou but I've heard good things about the dadong in Shanghai. They sent one of their best chefs down to run it and it's in a class A building.

There's a Da Dong in Shanghai now?? Can I find it in any other cities besides Beijing and Shanghai?

Yes -- although I've always used cash or a Chinese debit card, I'm pretty certain that visa/ mc will be accepted, and probably Amex too. Liqun (in the hutongs) may be an exception.

Was in Shanghai last week and had the duck at Park Hyatt's restaurant on the 91st floor, I think it's called Century 100. The restaurant itself is overly dark and serves a variety of Chinese/Western food. But don't be put off by this. The duck is quite decent.

#firstworldproblem here, but my flight lands at 8pm at PEK. I made a reservation for 9:30 pm @ Made in China at the Grand Hyatt. Doable? They open til 10:30 supposedly, and I can't imagine it being THAT busy at say 9:45pm even if I miss my reservation. Correct me if I'm wrong because in San Francisco I'm used to reservations being booked out 2 months in advance and 2 hour brunch lines even at 8am on a Sunday.

I should be getting a taxi for this journey right? Or should I airport express it?

drewguy Mar 7, 2014 11:57 am

You should get a taxi. It will be tight, between customs and possibly baggage claim and taxi lines.

The problem with showing up late is that the kitchen may be wanting to close.

BTW, can you change reservation to another night?

Pretty sure only this one night. I will be back in Beijing another night, but not sure if my coworkers are willing to venture out for duck. Are there other duck places that might be open late?
