I'm trying to work out whether trains moving between Beijing and Xi'an and then between Xi'an and Chengdu are against the TWOV rules (flying into Beijing and then out of Chendu to different countries). I think from looking at the maps, the train does pass through non-TWOV areas (of Sichuan for sure, I'm less clear on the Beijing - Xi'an part which I've seen lots of people say is OK as an itinerary). But we will only be alighting in cities approved for TWOV. Do you have any insight on that? There's little evidence on it given the recency of these changes! Thank you.

No, you're free to alight before the final stop on your "ticket".

However, the question here is not the railway part but the Visa Free travel part - you cannot go visit places in regions that are not part of the TWOV travel regions. Getting off the train in such regions would not technically be allowed. While it may not immediately catch up to you, if you try to check into a hotel in such an area, expect to get a police visit or worse. |
That's a good plan.

Of course if you get off the train in Pingyao while on TWOV there will be a record of your transgression and perhaps consequences. But to say "In practice, they control where you board/alight" gives the wrong impression that you'll be stopped from doing so.

What's appealing about the plan to you? Do you foresee any potential risks? If so, how would you preempt or address them?

And it is for 30 days and not 15 days. Quite a positive move, I will take advantage of it again to go back there in October.

Does anyone have experience with multiple entries? I'm planning to do some traveling in Asia which where I'll want to enter China a few times, for a few days each at a time (EU eligible passport).
I'm also considering a few day trips from HK to the mainland - is this also easy now? Many years ago I availed of the visa-free provisions to enter only Shenzhen and it was not straightforward at all and took hours. Thanks! |
You don't have anything to worry about as long as you don't overstay during any of your visits.
