Hotel recommendation Shanghai?
Hi guys!
I'm going to be in Shanghai on May 18-21, attending a conference at Shanghai New International Expo Centre, which from my understanding is in Pudong. I'm HHD, Accor Plat and Hyatt Diamond. I have heard good things about the Park Hyatt Shanghai, but I honestly find paying 1100 euro for three nights to be way too much for me, so wondering if anyone else has any better recommendations? Cleanliness is important, but most importantly, I'll be having most/all of my meals at the hotel so need something that has good quality food. I'll be attending the conference during the day and in the evening likely want to relax, do some work and have some food and then hit the sack. I'm willing to step outside my loyalty programmes if there is anything that would be better value for money. |
We stayed at the Hyatt on the Bund 4 years back, and thought treatment as a Diamond was quite nice. Used a DSU for a nice suite overlooking the water.
At that time it was half the price of the PH. |
I have not stayed at the PH Shanghai, but I have stayed at both the Hyatt on the Bund and the Grand Hyatt Shanghai in the past year or so. Both the GH and the Hyatt on the Bund are excellent hotels.
Rooms in both of these remain very impressive, and the in house restaurants are good as well. That said, there is amazing food (Both Chinese and Western) all over Shanghai and I would not restrict myself to eating in the hotel if I had sufficient time. |
I have limited hotel experience in Shanghai (I usually stayed at a business hotel over by the Fudan School of Public Health where my meetings were) but on one trip my husband accompanied me and we spent the tourism part of our trip at Hyatt on the Bund (my husband insisted on a river view ;-) It was a lovely hotel - we did have a great view. A bit of a walk to a subway station but it wasn't a problem for us. We normally took a taxi out in the morning and made our way back at the end of the day via walking & subway, depending on where/what we were doing.
We stayed in a Club room - nice breakfast, good drinks & appetizers in the afternoon, and of course - the view ;-) |
I have stayed at PH Hyatt. While it is nice and I do not regret staying there, I will not return as there are plenty of better hotels. As for recommendations, I would set a budget first. Do not be too concerned about the food quality. Unlike restaurants at US hotels, most, if not all big international hotels in major cities in China have great restaurants.

Anyone have recommendations on the following?
- Grand Hyatt Shanghai - Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Shanghai - Kerry Hotel Pudong Shanghai - Four Points by Sheraton Hotel Shanghai, Pudong - Sheraton Grand Shanghai Pudong Hotel & Residences |
Would it make sense to use cash + points for a Hyatt? You can use Diamond Suite Uppgrades with these rates, which also earn night/stay credits.
I'd look at a current subway map and try to find a hotel that's in a convenient location for your conference. New subway lines keep opening, so make sure you're looking at up-to-date information. |

While I am part of Hyatt Gold Passport, it's not one of the primary programs I use. I have only about 6500 points and no status with them. I have Gold status in Hilton and Starwood. |

I will be visiting some friends who work near the Jinke Rd. station. I'll also be visiting Shanghai Disney for 2 days while I'm there. I need to get to line 11 for that as I understand it.

Consider putting Disney on the front or back end of your trip, and staying on site for one or two nights 2. I'm at a bit of a loss wrt Jinke Road (boonies), but anywhere on line 2 would be okay 3. Don't let subway convenience play too much of a role in your calculus @brokenwindow: In your case, staying near the convention center is obviously desirable. Maybe look into the Kerry? |

GH in Lujiazui is excellent - only a cat 4 hotel so only requires 15K points (or use your FN cert if you have the chase card). I haven't stayed at the PH in Pudong but would def stay at the GH again. Excellent lounge, great service, and who could forget the dizzying views looking down all the floors?

Stayed at GH first week it opened in 99.
Paid $175/night 17 years later its only $238...seems like a good deal. Architecturally it blows away the PH. |

Tripadvisor makes it seem like people who stayed at the GH weren't really happy with the surrounding area, whereas the Sheraton has more shops/restaurants just downstairs and is close to the subway. I have walked around that area before but I believe it was during normal work hours. Not sure how it is after the offices close.
I suspect that the differences in opinions on Tripadvisor are, in large part, due to the facts that there is very little crossover between the visitor demographics, and people who spend $300/night on hotels often (mistakenly) assume that they are well situated for tourism. By the way, I have a friend who works near Jinke Road metro stn, and -- motivated by your post upthread-- I asked her if there was anything of interest nearby, and she told me "nothing at all". ETA: *I misspoke on this one point; Tangqiao is considerably less expensive than Lujiazui. |

While I agree that Lujiazui is stale, overpriced*, and deserted at night, Tangqiao successfully raises the bar in all 3 categories.
Actually there is a lot going on there if you have lots of money to spend and know where to go. There are a lot of rich people that live there and they party all night..every night.:D |
