Opening a bank account is a voluntary, private transaction between an individual and a company. Until the scumbag Patriot Act was enacted, banks could choose or decline to require ID to open an account. The federal government should have no say in the matter and the scumbags responsible for the Patriot Act and other disgusting, un-American pieces of legislation should be caned and deported.

Incredibly Silly

In EWR on Friday we approached the TSA dude checking IDs against BPs ahead of security. I gave my wife her documents to go through and held onto my own. She went through first and then I handed the TSO mine, he checked my passport against my boarding pass, flashed a black light on it for a split second, initialed the BP and handed everything back to me -- without ever looking up at my face, as usual.

It was only *after* security that we realized my wife had my BP and Passport and I had hers by mistake. She is a 5'2" Bangladeshi woman. I am a 6'0" white dude.

The whole thing is beyond pointless.

peace,
~Ben~

Just wondering why you didn't try to stand up for her or at least try to help out? Curious for your perspective...

Because they (the cops and AA) created a perimeter and shooed everyone away. ANd I *did* need to fly that day ;)

As for the ID thing, TSA at the AA terminal is now using big, blue floor-standing machines to read the barcode from every boarding pass. It displays all the info on a screen - name, seat number, PNR, etc. And they were diligently comparing. I even saw them send an older couple back because they had a boarding pass without the new form of barcode on it. And hold up the line for someone who's barcode wouldn't read.

Not for nothing but Bangladeshi women are hawt. Good Job ^

I once had a customer that I needed to check his ID. He had a B&W picture of Ray Charles over his picture on the DL. Of course I made him take the license out so I could see his picture.

He told me that he goes to clubs every weekend, buys smokes every day and in the two years he had the Ray Charles picture I was the ONLY person that questioned it.

Proves to me that most people that check ID get complacent or don't really care.

Are you trying to make us all feel insecure or cause us to question what we are getting for all the money spent on this stuff? Next time, please don't try another "experiment" like that one, or if you do don't tell us about it, so we may continue to believe in the systems we have in place to protect us. (It would be interesting to hear what the TSA person in charge there would say in response to your story.)

As we've both noticed, not broken in the least.

Paranoia -- including that which fuels bigotry and that which is endemic to bigotry -- gets communicated even without those emoticons.

What is "ssi," something like "super secret intelligence"?

No not broken, I just thought their use would undercut the intended sardonic effect.

What "paranoia" and whose? I see no systematized delusions and the projection of personal conflicts ascribed to the supposed hostility of others here. Indeed, it would be delusional to believe there was not substantial hostility toward the US on the part of some and that they do not represent a very real threat to the US. Whether the measures being taken to frustrate those who would attack us again are maximally effective and efficient may be an open question, but that the threats are there is not. (If this goes against the zeitgeist here, so be it.)
