BUF: These are the spoils of the U.S. war on terror
Items confiscated at Buffalo airport could fill a Dumpster every two days
From hand cream to Hennessy, surrendered carry-on contraband has a variety of destinations By Mary B. Pasciak NEWS STAFF REPORTER Updated: 12/10/07 7:53 AM Follow a maze of corridors through the basement at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, pass through several locked doors, and eventually you arrive at the door to a storage room under Gate 26. There, a sign on the door announces: “Warning! This room contains hazardous materials.” Unlock the door, and you find two bright yellow, double-wide metal lockers. On both, stark red capital letters warn: “FLAMMABLE — KEEP FIRE AWAY.” “FLAMMABLE GAS.” “FLAMMABLE LIQUID.” The lockers are filled with covered white bins bearing even more warning stickers. Open the bins, and you find the bottled hazards that lurk within: Hennessy cognac. McCormick vodka. Rite Aid nail polish remover. Napoleon brandy. http://www.buffalonews.com/home/story/225545.html |
So are toy weapons. “We end up with a decentsized box of guns, lightsabers and swords,” O’Neil said of the holiday season. “The toys are disposed of. We’re not allowed federally to give them to any one charity.” And of course, what article about TSA stupidity would be complete without a mindless quote from one of our dumber citizens? “It takes more time, and it’s a little more of a headache. But it’s for the safety of everybody.” |

Also, love the idea of "the Transportation Security Administration’s customer service manager" Who knew? I didn't think the TSA even recognized they had customers. |
Or performed customer service!

This is nothing more than legal theft by your government.

"These are the spoils of the U.S. war on terror, surrendered by airline passengers who realize, as they’re going through security, that they can’t take certain toiletries and beverages on the plane with them."
Let's try that again: "These are the spoils of the Communist Party's candyassed little war on liquids, the citizens of the United States, and guests in this nation. These spoils are stolen from passengers by actors working for little jackasses in Washington who don't understand basic chemistry." |

Wow. I really don't have a high opinion of the TSA...........but even this suprises me. How can you ban a toy replica of a weapon that doesn't exist? Does someone need to explain to Kip that Star Wars isn't real?

At the same time you might want to explain to Kip about the chances of taking two liquids and combining them on an airplane into an explosive strong enough to take down a plane. Does that exist?

Don't you watch Die Hard or Harry Potter or play Dungeons and Dragons? Of course the threat is real. As real as Salazar Slytherin or The Killing Curse!

At Tegel in Berlin last Sunday I saw a man going through their disposal bins collecting shampoo, cologne etc. It was terribly sad, but I suppose is a contrast to plastic bottle collecting.

Wasn't it us who were calling for HAZMAT containment conditions not too long ago?
Yeah, I doubt too there's such a thing in the garbage pail right below the x-ray machine (where many of such deadly liquids are stored), but it's a step in what many of us have been asking for. |
