Why not bring back the "unopened bottles only" rule instead of the current absurdity?

IIRC right after 9/11 the rule on liquids was unopened bottles only. Why not use this rule instead of the ridiculous current "no liquids or gels at all" rule? Or do the "Islamo-Facists" also control the Evian bottling plants?

Personally I believe that once all this calms down in a couple of days, they will go to this. If you want to bring a bottle of whatever on board, it must be factory-sealed. The only problem will be "who will control it?" Would probably have to be at security checkpoints. Right now even beverages purchased at concessions in the secure area must be consumed before boarding. Do they have more TSA pesonnel at each gate ensuring compliance with this? I don't know.

For already opened bottles, they could just make you drink it. Not a lot of people want to drink nitroglycerine.

Take a look at the bottom of you unopened bottle of water. How hard do you think it would be to use a syringe to drain and refill the bottle with your favorite liquid and then seal the pin hole with a little heat.

Bend over (or use a mirror) and look at your sphincter. How hard do think it would be to insert things in it? Ask your local jail/prison inmate or drug mule how they get things across.

What about animals carried on board too, actually? Who's to say that they can't be used as bomb mules.

I think that is an intelligent idea. However, media reports indicate that the terrorist wannabe's were planning to use gatorade bottles with a false bottom that would then be re-filled and re-sealed prior to arriving at the airport. Hence the need to dispose of all bottles.

However, that doesn't really explain why it would be necessary to ban starbucks and mcdonald's drinks purchased airside. But logic is not a required course to work for the TSA (these are the same people who require people to remove flip flops).

Given the amount of safety-proofing on water bottles these days (the plastic seal over the top that you have to tear off and discard before you can actually open the bottle), how could you re-seal a bottle such that it would look unopened, unless you have access to the bottling factory that puts on the plastic thingy?

There you go again, using common sense where none is called for.

It is possible to open water bottles without breaking the seal. I have done it by accident a few times.

Also one article said they were gonna use a "false bottom" in the container so it would appear to be sealed and if asked they could open and drink it without getting any of the nasty stuff.

Exactly. The rules are either going to remain the ban on liquids, with the exceptions asking to be abused, or return to the 9 August rules. The inginuity of the bad guys will always come up with some way to get what they want onboard.

Flew into BHM this afternoon. Yes, they have TSA tables at the gate to do secondary searches of all carry-ons prior to boarding since you can buy prohibited items airside. This is unlike ATL where prohibited items like lotion and toothpaste are no longer for sale.

I'm sorry, but I just can't get over using the term "prohibited item" in relation to friggin' SHOWER GEL!!!! I'm sure when we fly home I'll get grilled more about the baby's juice bottle than the 9mm I'll be sending in checked luggage!

False bottoms? I've got a Gatorade bottle right here and I don't see how you can put a false bottom in one.

I believe that the actual bottles to be used were the ones that have the black plastic bottoms on them. These can come off and then be reattached to the main part of the bottle without ever having to open the "drink". I guess the best thing I can think of is the old 2 liter bottles that we used to have.
