I believe that the actual bottles to be used were the ones that have the black plastic bottoms on them. These can come off and then be reattached to the main part of the bottle without ever having to open the "drink". I guess the best thing I can think of is the old 2 liter bottles that we used to have.

I think that is an intelligent idea. However, media reports indicate that the terrorist wannabe's were planning to use gatorade bottles with a false bottom that would then be re-filled and re-sealed prior to arriving at the airport. Hence the need to dispose of all bottles.
