I might have outdated information. I do know that some of the remote stations on the far southwest Texas and NM borders are pretty much as far away from modern civilization as you can get. People who have never been there have no idea just how much fun it is down there.
Those places are as "rural" as you can get with nothing there other than maybe a Mom/Pop store that over price everything to just stay alive.... |

Rumor has it that they are asking for CBP and Border Patrol Agents not along the boarder to come visit up to 90 days.....along with FAMS....before they start forcing the issue.
not a rumor - its fact. But most are declining - dont want to give up a cushy aisle seat for dust and sand in their shorts. :) |

Can they be sent TDY against their wishes if the government needs them there?

It's not just the dust and the isolation - long hours of OT and nowhere to spend it - it's worth it for three months, especially with cellphones, facetime, snapchat, etc.
It's also the heat. There are people who can't stand that heat. I've been with folks in a truck with the a/c so high I was shivering but they were still uncomfortable just looking at the heat outside. |
From the Global Entry - processing timelines of first time applications [US citizens & LPR's] thread about a July 2, 2019, appointment at the LAX Global Entry Enrollment Center:

Update on 6/18/19. I received this email:
Global Entry Applicant, You are receiving this e-mail because your scheduled Global Entry Enrollment Center appointment has been cancelled. The ongoing humanitarian and security crisis on our southern border has required extraordinary action by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including the deployment of additional U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel to the southern border. In response to this effort, CBP is temporarily reducing staff at Global Entry Enrollment Centers and reassigning them to support frontline traveler processing during the summer months. Regrettably, this situation has forced the cancellation of your scheduled appointment. |
Let’s see what other things the Administration cancels while using the excuse of resource allocation/re-allocation for “crisis at the border”.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says some of the agents who interview Global Entry applicants at the San Francisco International Airport are being transferred to the border for the summer. Limited staffing at the enrollment center means appointments made months ago are being canceled, leaving travelers who paid a $100 application fee feeling frustrated. |

Conditional approval this morning Interview at SFO 3.5 hours later Scheduled to be approved today Getting my appointment was incredible luck by the way. Someone must have just cancelled, and I grabbed it having just been conditionally approved. For the fun of it, I had checked for appointments each of the three days before, and none were available. It appears the article clarifies some. |
An update on TSA's use of employees for the crisis on the border.
TSA sending 650 airport screeners to U.S.-Mexico border The headline is a bit misleading, it's a mix of screeners and air marshals. The Transportation Security Administration plans to send more than 650 airport screeners and federal air marshals to beef up protection along the U.S.-Mexico border. House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings says TSA tells his committee it has dispatched nearly 200 screeners and supervisors and 172 air marshals to the border already and plans to send another 294. |
