TSA Orders Morpho CTX 9800 DSi Explosives Detection Systems

Here is a press release from Morpho Detection, Inc. that is posted on Market Watch:

Press release:

Ya'll have fun with the second sentence in this paragraph:
"Morpho Detection is pleased the TSA has chosen our CTX 9800 and 9400 EDS to help meet its checked bag screening needs," said Brad Buswell, president and CEO, Morpho Detection, Inc. "The CTX 9400 and 9800 explosives detection systems customize CT-based imaging technology, originally developed for healthcare, [emphasis added] for a wide range of airport needs and aviation security challenges."

Follow The Money

I looked up Morpho Detection. Interestingly, they do not have a "corporate officers" page under the typical "who are we" menu. Becoming immediately suspicious, I had to do some digging. Using 5 minutes of the best Francine Kerner Googling technique, I discovered the following:

"Jay M. Cohen" jumped out at me. He is the former director of the DHS Science and Technology Directorate. I looked just a bit further. Jay M. Cohen also has another job... He is a principal in, you guessed it, The Chertoff Group.

Move along now...nothing to see here.

+Infinity for doing the work to find that out. Thanks!

Taxpayers spending $17M on 15 Explosives Detection Systems from Morpho Detection,Inc

I'm a taxpayer and no one consulted me on this purchase.

TSA owns it!

Do we know which airports will be? I think FLL will gets CTX-9800. I am not quite sure for which one is that.

Improved thread title: "Chertoff fleeces taxpayers for another $17M."

Of course not. The purchase doesn't serve the taxpayers.

It serves the people selling the equipment to the TSA, and the TSA employees who will use it to locate money, jewelry, and electronics in baggage so they can "accept its surrender" and re-sell it on eBay or Craigslist.

Cohen was named to Morpho's board in November 2010. I guess 14 months is a decent enough interval to avoid obvious impropriety.

Whether it's just taxes, or "appropriations" by the clerks at the checkpoint?

Right. If they have enough financial to install new inline baggage screening system. CTX is a right choice to screened the bags.

I know which US Airports who already have CTX-9800/9400/9000DSi is: ATL, MIA, JAX, PHX, LAX, SFO, SEA, DEN, DFW, ORD, DTW, JFK, BOS, BWI, IAD, DCA, MSP, CLT, RDU, SJC, SAN.
