I know what he said. However he left by the deadline so he's fine. If he hadn't, then this would be his major problem, above all others.

The way I read it, he said he left one day after the deadline. And I still stand by my statement: a technical and unwillful overstay is much less of a problem than having more ties to the US than to his home country.
