How's the new checkpoint, and have they closed down the other ones to start installing more NoS?

Checkpoint C was open today (11/21) with MMW in use and a huge line. Checkpoint B was still WTMD only and had no line.

Just passed through checkpoint C this morning -- in part because my leg's acting up and I wasn't up to a longer walk than necessary. No line, but I'm sad to say they are wasting no time ramping up to MMW. I remember when SJC started they very slowly increased use of the NoS, probably to get passengers used to them being around, but this morning everyone except flight crew was sent to the NoS automatically.
The TSOs are clearly not used to opt-outs or assertive passengers yet, they didn't know where to put me while we all waited for the groper to come by. They wanted to walk me through the MMW; I stated quite loudly I was not going through the machine for any reason and the agent was practically apologetic while they opened the wheelchair gate for me. I wonder how long that touch of civility will last now that the NoS is in place. After a few minutes a white shirt and senior TSO I haven't seen before turned up; the senior TSO referred to the white shirt as a trainee multiple times. The trainee was doing alright with the pre-grope briefing until I asked him to clarify "resistance" -- that really flustered him and he mumbled something about going to the area between "the thigh and the leg" (um, okay), and he didn't say a word for the rest of the patdown. He tried to stay well clear of my resistance -- the senior TSO had to instruct him to pat down there. One can hope the guy is thinking twice about what he's gotten himself into, but I doubt it. I noticed several other TSOs had stopped and were watching the novel sight of an opt-out in progress. For now I'll continue to use the A/B checkpoints and quietly hope that checkpoint renovations take as long (or longer) as the construction of terminal C has taken. |
I've seen how the TSA has put in a MMW NoS in EWR A1... Didn't believe they'd have the room there to put it in, but they managed to squeeze it in. Given how tight EWR A1 is compared to SNA A/B checkpoints, I can see them fitting in MMW NoS without reconfiguring the entire checkpoint.

Well, it's the end of the world as we know it. Starting tomorrow (Wednesday 1/18) the UA terminal checkpoint will be closed for 2 weeks to install the NoS, then the AA terminal checkpoint will close. The best reason to fly out of SNA just disappeared. :td:

Actually I think it is terminal A that is the only good one left right now. I think the labeling starts with the AA terminal as A, the UA terminal is B and the new one is C. I think.

Well there goes that theory. TC was absolutely horrible this morning (with TB closed). The regular line was stretched almost all the way to the UA check in area. The F line was "reasonable" by comparison and only took about 15 minutes to get thru.
They are actually delaying/holding some planes (645 departures) in hopes that more will make it thru security. Hearing the announcements for missing passengers on most flights, sometimes 5-10 people long. My rough guess would be 1-1.5 hours to make it thru security in the Y line this morning. The sad thing is they had 2 BP checkers for the F line and only 1 for the Y line which made it move even slower. Once past the BP checkers, you are guided to a security line with no dedicated line for F which means mingling with/getting stuck behind people who have never flown before |
