Discussion on TSA bins

I can never seem to figure this out...

When you go through security, you take bins off of the cart and fill them with your items send them through the x-ray, then collect your items and you leave the bins on the rollers. If you can take 6 bins from the cart, surely you can return 6 bins to the cart at the end of the lane. (Thank you to those of you that do return the bins to the cart, or at least stack them up and push them to then end of the lane.)

Another thing... Why do people think they can collect their belongings faster than they come out of the machine? By this, I mean standing at the end of the x-ray tunnel and not moving down the rollers to the end where there is most always room. People cop an attitude when the bins start flipping over because we "keep running the machine and are not paying attention" when there is 12 feet of open space for them to slide down to but just choose not to. BTW, I am paying enough attention to the x-ray machine and looking down the line to see if there is space for people to move down, it's not my fault that people are just ignorant to their surroundings and don't move.:td:

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

And you thought the public was the ones complaining about the TSA. We all have our own complaints too. Yours are just verbalized more I guess...

I stack my used bins out of personal choice of proper etiquette and I stack others' bins as well. However, I'm forced to put my stuff in the bins that I'd rather not have to do in the first place. So if I don't quickly stack up my used bins, deal with it or stop making me separate so many various things.

Also - I stand at the end of the belt rather than the rollers because I'd rather not be a victim of theft or even accidental pick-ups.. As soon as it's within arm's reach, without stretching into the tunnel, I will pick up my things. I've had a guy reaching over my shoulder to grab what he thought was his bag before, clearly in a hurry, until I loudly told him it wasn't his bag.

Two weeks ago at PHX T4 A checkpoint, as my laptop came through and just as I was reaching for it a TSO picked it up and took it 3 feet away to swab and analyze. Meanwhile I'm standing there with my carry-on backpack, shoes and belt in hand refusing to budge. I was barked at and I was in fact blocking others but was not going to let my laptop out of my line of site and let the annoying barker TSO know this - if it gets dropped or turned on, etc, I want to see it happen. Had I moved two steps down the line the laptop would not have been visible to me.

Note that I did not voluntarily delay others by asking for fresh gloves and swab pad. My laptop was simply involuntarily seized off the belt post x-ray and there was nothing I could do if I wanted to keep my eyes on it. I only wish I'd had a hand on it because at the point there would have been zero chance I'd have let go without claiming theft by the TSO.

Okay, since you brought it up, let's deal.

I will stack the bins when:

You allow me to keep my shoes on.
You let me have a sealed canned drink.
You do not make me beg to keep medically necessary liquids.
You do not take nudie pictures of little girls.
You do not expose me to even small amounts of radiation.
You do not screen me again at the gate.
You do not wave little strips of paper over my drink bought in the sterile area.
You quit asking me where I am going today.
You no longer say "You may not get to fly today."
You allow me to observe my stuff until it is again in my possession when not in the machine.
You admit that that there at those in your organization that lie, steal and harangue pax while you and your leadership defend and protect them and adamantly insist that it is a minor problem while making it almost infinitely impossible to complain effectively to the leviathan about the abuses to the pax from people in the system.

Until then, stack your bins and quit your complaining. It sounds like whining, and big boys and girls do not whine.

I have, until this time, tried to stack bins and generally police the area as I was awaiting the hopeful return of my stuff out of the magic tunnel. It seemed like the nice thing to do. Since you enjoy it so much, maybe not so often now.

Because some of your co-workers can steal stuff faster then it comes out of the machine. If stuff wasn't stolen at checkpoints you wouldn't have as many people worried about it and want their belongings in their hands as soon as possible.

+1

I realize that having to stack bins cuts into your BS time with fellow TSO's but that's life. As the OP says, quit whining, or quit and get another job.

We don't want to use the bins at all unless we have a big jacket/coat.

Your disgusting, un-American agency makes us divest shoes and is responsible for liquid idiocy and buying x-ray machines that can't scan a laptop if it's in a bag.

You should be happy we don't throw the bins on the floor.

Or more valid perhaps (cough) Officer ?

With 50,000 TSOs, surely you can find someone to monitor the bins and stack them up when extra's are left on the belt...

I stand at the exit of the x-ray tunnel so I can make sure to grab my belongings before some TSO tries to do a snatch and grab. We've all heard the stories about TSOs stealing items from the checkpoint... In all of the airports I have gone through, there is plenty of room for others to walk around me, so what's the big deal? I can stand there if I want. On that subject, why do you keep running the x-ray when the area is clearly full of bins? There are multiple times in DEN, and other airports, where the belt is full of bins with items still waiting to be picked up. Why not have some TSO monitoring that process, so you don't flip someone's laptop on the floor?

Is there a section in the TSA Constitution prohibiting the stacking of bins on the floor?

TSA's bins, TSA's problem.

Surely the skill level needed to stack and move bins doesn't challenge you and your co-workers.

Well, maybe it does!

LessO2 Jun 15, 2010 7:15 am

When I know that theft is not a problem and that the floors are cleaned on a regular basis, then I will move down the line.

cordelli Jun 15, 2010 8:08 am

As one woman explained it to me recently in front of me when she asked if I could get her a bin -

These things are filthy and are never washed, I am not touching them.

I think that's one reason so many people won't stack them once they get their stuff, they want as little contact as possible.

Plus, it's hard to figure out what to do with them. Some airports it's pretty obvious, there's a cart for them at the end of the rollers. But at others they get stacked on top of the guard over the belt, they go on the floor, etc. It's just easier to run for the plane then it is to figure it out for some.

If your posting this thinking your going to get sympathy you need to look elsewhere because your not going to get it from me and other frequent travelers, who see straight through the circus act and bravo sierra that flows from TSA. You really chose a bad time to post something like this especially since my tolerance for BS, lies and Shenanigans by TSA is non-existent especially after my last trip.

Even common courtesy for TSA has long since be removed due to repeated problems, BS, rules being pulled from posteriors and down right lies and theft. Remember respect is earned, and at this point it would take a very long time to even get back to even; so now TSA now gets a dose of its own medicine/attitude everytime i fly. Nice to me gets you nothing as TSA is still way way in the red. Bark at me or make threats and all bets are off and you better back it up with legally justifiable action(99.9999% it isnt and TSA backs down when they know i wont yield) as its on like donkey kong with no leash, and the cop wannabe uniforms and badges dont bother me as I have several of my own(Fire, EMS, etc).

Inkundernails list is very close to mine as well.

Then i will add this; How lazy are you and your co-workers that its so hard for you to grab the bins that weigh less then a pound and stack them on the cart. If your looking for sympathy look elsewhere I lift hundreds of pounds 50-100 times a day, not including the lift cycles to lift a 72-92KG hydrolic powered stretcher. The low end of the average is 450 lbs, and the most i have ever helped lift was north of 900lbs, and that snapped the frame of a $12K bariatic stretcher. If TSA employees are getting injured lifting this little weight there either in poor shape, and or dont know proper body mechanics and how to lift. Sounds like the perfect reason to thin the herd.

Considering I have had items stolen from me off the x-ray belt, as well as a laptop (and a camera nearly if it wasnt for a quick reaction time) catapulted off the belt. I watch everyone like a hawk, especially TSA employees who are known for sticky fingers amongst other things. With items routinely being catapulted off the belts it seems beyond general incompetence in doing there job (Red team test, and routine news reports of breaches and other failures) lack spacial awareness and attention to detail.

As for taking my time repacking it. Considering the amount of time I have to tear down my backpack because of TSAs chicken little the sky is falling, peddling to the least common stupid denominator because you can train your people right attitude im gonna take my time and make sure its packed right and safely. If you have a problem complain to your bosses and get some of these stupid polices removed. There is the whole sanitation issue, and TSAs lack of proper use of BSI PPE as published by CDC and OSHA guidelines.

Oh yes i know about your co-workers complaining about the people that pay your salaries. If you dont like your job quit and go elsewhere. Also watch what you say as you never know whose listening. Considering my hearing is very good its amazing the number of things i have heard come out of TSA employees mouths that they wouldn't dare say to someone whose paying there salary nor my face. There is one at DFW that will think twice before making comments in the future, and about the people that pay there salaries. The other I think was terminated as I havent seen that one in the time since the incident. This pairs comments were uncalled for, rude, disrespectful and highly unprofessional.

Maybe TSA could enlist some TSOs to be constantly wiping down the bins...
