UR->Hyatt->WN for Companion Pass - All 110k??

Is this crazy?

I have a CP until the end of next year, so this is hypothetical and was thinking if this would be worth it for someone who needs a CP with WN.

I have an Ink card and fully utilize the 5x and 2x spending...So here is my thinking...Would it be an option to use 230K UR points to get the WN CP??

Here is the cost associated (Correct me if I am wrong)

1. Buy $500 GC's at gas station for 2x points until you max out at $50,000 for the year.

The cost would be $495 for the 100K UR points

2. Buy $200 GC's at Office Supply store for 5x points until you get to $26000 (Only to 26000 to keep cost down)

The cost would be $903.50 for 130K points

Conclusion:

So for $1398.50 you accumulate 230K UR points, which you transfer to Hyatt for 230K points then transfer to WN for 110K points and earn the CP.

Am I wrong somewhere in this?? $1400 bucks to get 110K put in your RR account and a CP?? I think it makes sense...especially if you have already received the 4 WN cc's in the past and cannot get the bonus points for signing up.

I fly WN a lot so, maybe for those, it makes sense???? At least if you have the INK.

Thoughts??

Get the Marriott card for 70K + 1 Cat 1-4 (sometimes its 50K)

Rack up 200K UR like you discuss.

Redeem for trip reward of 7 days Cat 1-5 + 120K RR points (package 3).

http://www.marriott.com/rewards/usepoints/morepack.mi

Get your CP + 7 nights in a Cat 1-5, plus a Cat 1-4 certificate, plus 120k RR.

How can 110K points and a companion pass be worth more than 230K UR points which can be converted to, among other things, 230K WN points? Unless maybe you are regularly paying cash after Wanna Get Away fares are no longer available, in which case you would earn the 110K anyway.

Scenario #1- (no CP)

RT to MCO = 29640 RR

I have 3 people in my family and try to go here 1-2 times a year

3 people x 29640 = 88,920 RR per trip

88,920 RR x 3 trips in 2 years = 266,760 RR (and you’re done)

Scenario #2 (with CP)

1. Spend 230K UR points to get CP
2. RT to MCO = 29640 RR
3. 3 people x 29640 = 59820 RR per trip (one RT w/CP)
4. 59820 x 3 trips = 179,460 RR
5. I would only have 110,000 CP points initially so I would have to transfer in an additional 69,460 UR points to cover these 3 trips
6. Total UR points to transfer = Approx: 300,000
7. Add the fact I have had a CP for almost two years for other trips

Without a CP, 300K UR points transferred to WN = $5618 in WGA fares.
With a CP, 3 travelers and 180K WN points (300K UR total used) = $5056 in WGA fares.

Without a CP, 400K UR points transferred to WN = $7490 in WGA fares.
With a CP, 3 travelers and 280K WN points (400K UR total used) = $7865 in WGA fares.

So the break even point is around 350K UR points. (Exact values vary by up to $150 total due to variations in WN calculations - these are based on $100 fares)

If you travel with just 2 people or pay cash for tickets (especially close in), the math can work out much better for getting the CP. But I'd much rather have the UR points and not be married to one airline.

Hang on there. 3 people flying means RR points would be transferred to their individual RR accounts, right? Let's say for example my wife & I are travelling and we both have a RR account, the RR points will go towards our individual accounts, correct? Am I missing something here?

Nope, I would just use my RR's to book the tickets. You can buy tickets for anyone using your account.

Sorry I meant to ask that you won't "earn" RR points for anyone else travelling with you (if you use your account to purchase both the tickets)?

You are correct. You can purchase a ticket for anyone with your points (the topic of this thread), but only the traveler can earn points for paid tickets.
