If you book a flight through Chase Ultimate Rewards will you:
a) earn frequent flier miles for the airline you choose when you pay with your card
b) earn frequent flier miles for the airline you choose when you pay with points
c) not earn any frequent flier miles

Im confused, but if you are using your Chase Sapphire card through their shopping portal, you will get: 2x points for Chase Sapphire, whatever bonus through their shopping portal, and whatever airline miles based off your flight.

If you are using the 50k rewards to purchase airfare, you will get the miles from the airline.

I just wanted to make sure that you could earn airline miles from rewards flights through UR, because if I transferred the miles 1:1 to UA and got a flight for 25,000 miles, I wouldn't receive tier qualification (or additional mileageplus redeemable) miles for that flight. If I book using ultimate rewards I will, right?

That's correct. Buying through UR is just like paying with cash. Think of your points as a debit card with a value of 1 cent per point (so that 50,000 points would be worth 50,000 x $0.01 = $500).

Transferring to UA and purchasing with miles is an award redemption, so that's not going to earn any sort of miles, elite-qualifying or redeemable.

I recently booked a trip to Texas. That ticket would have cost approximately $650, or 65,000 Chase UR points, but I would earn EQM and RDM for that flight.

Instead I used my United miles, and spent 25,000 UA miles. Much cheaper, but I did not earn any EQM or RDM on that ticket.

Has anyone figured out what this sentence means yet? Anyone make a booking at Travelocity for a flight or hotel MORE than 3 weeks away and received the 2x points?

Data point:

2/15 Booked two flight tickets that are 6 weeks away on Travelocity through UR mall
2/18 2x points posted

:D:D

Wouldn't you just get the bonus next year? It's not like it was a one time deal for 2011.

Maybe it's about having to pay the annual fee to get the bonus now?

Indeed! I would normally cancel before October, unless they waived the fee. Guess we'll see how this plays out for actual use/benefits being worth holding on/paying the fee.

thats correct. If you book through their site by paying with credit card, you will earn qualifying miles. Think of them as a travel agent. There are merely a middle man.

But you pay in cash not miles through UR correct? Not an award at all just a purchase based on converting miles into dollars, and not a very good ratio IIRC

Now matter if you pay cash or use your UR points for your flight (1.25 cent/point, not the transfer feature), you will get both RDMs and EQMs.

But a good ratio for Chase. Anyone who uses UR points is just allowing Chase to rebate them a portion of the fees earned by Chase in using the credit card -- the Capital One venture rewards program would be a much better value than Chase UR when used in this manner.

I realize I am comparing apples to oranges but by using 100K DK Sypesos I get
A J ticket that would sell for $4480 RT JFK ATH.

Also by using 25 K UR points to CO I get a RT ATH CDG that sells for $410 + taxes for about 1.64 cents per UR point. I realize then u don't get the RDM and EQMS and I guess the DL Is just anomaly

Guess I am spoiled by my travel needs, and my Skypesos

When you can get low level international Delta BE award tickets with Skymiles, that is almost always the best possible redemption. $4000+ Europe tickets for 100,000 skymiles, $6000+ Asia tickets for 120,000 skymiles. Even better if you can build triangle Europe or Asia tickets, for example US-Vienna-Milan-US or US-Japan (not Tokyo)-China/Korea/other Asia-US. And they are available, you just have to work at it and be flexible with travel dates.
Using UR rewards to buy air tickets does have value, but a different kind than using FF miles.

Delayed Baggage claims

so I found the big downside of the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
Delayed Baggage coverage. Unlike it says on most literature i've read, Chase does not provide quality coverage.
1. It only provides coverage after 18 hrs have passed. Up until that point, you're toast - no funds for toothpaste, change of underwear, nothing. 18 hours is huge if you are flying into a city for business.
2. Even after 18 hrs, they only provide $100/day. In Europe that will get you next to nothing.
I will be cancelling my card - the points are not worth the amount lost due to appearing un-presentable for business meetings.
My basic AmEx gives better coverage.

longhorn11 Feb 27, 2012 12:25 pm

Add one more Chase card that is getting the EMV chip, the Hyatt Card. This would be the perfect card for me if they would just add the chip. I spoke with the CSP customer service and they said they MIGHT add it early in Q2.
